So you are telling me we almost had a nightmare Lily? That would have been so cool... not great for everyone else but cool nonetheless.
good thing they are quadrupeds because there was a lot of shoe dropping in this chapter
Ohhhhhh the plot THICKENS
I like how Lily has been the most anti-batpony for the most part, but even she didn't see "oh yeah Eclipse phase just summons demons sometimes, as a thing they do. When Luna did it, she became Nightmare Moon" coming.
I love your whole worldbuilding!

All those batpony myths, like drinking blood? They had to come from somewhere. I'm guessing most are spawned from incidents caused by these Accursed Shadows.
Stars then took those horror stories, and attributed them to the whole tribe to appear more menacing.
Hmm, every member is a magic user, they must survive perilous trials including potential possession, their headquarters is on a moon...
Yeah, getting huge Grey Knights vibes here.
That wasn't just worldbuilding, that was a *slam dunk* of worldbuilding.
What a great chapter!
.........THERE IS A REFERENCE HERE, I KNOW THAT!
Folks, back me up here!
*looks around*
*stand up*
*inhale*
THE PLOT THIKENNNNS!
*a shadow spear miss you by inches*
I REGRET NOTHING!
*shadows envelopes you*
NEVER FORGET THE PLOT!
Oh, so that's how it works. I've heard this one before. I know exactly what to do.

Military applications usually make it easier to get funding.
For example, the development of rockets was lead by their military applications and the civilian ones were a byproduct (if you have a rocket that can lift a big nuke into orbit, you can also use it to lift a spaceship).
GPS was developed for military purposes too, so was the internet.
Those technologies required a lot of money to even begin paying off, a private company may not be able to spend that much without getting any returns (with no guarantee of ever getting returns), while the government may be more willing to spend a lot of money if it results i better weapons.
I guess Anon is hoping to have it easier to convince the government to give him lots of money to industrialize Equestria if he can show that this could be useful in a war.

I don’t think I stole his line directly from anywhere, but I’m mostly referencing the “Harrowing” ritual from Dragon Age (which uses the same terms like possession and abomination). There are other similar horrifying initiation rituals as well, like Luke going into the place strong with the Dark Side in The Empire Strikes Back, or Dune’s Gom Jabbar test of humanity.
Ok, kudos to those who survived and mastered what most often leaves you with a Shadow-Eaten.
Normally you don't deal with that shit until you're dead, and these bat ponies part the Veil, pull them through and put them to work?
That's some serious juju slinging going on. But Nightmare Moon was Luna's attempt to stitch together a Spectre without the whole "Oblivion ALL the things" going down? That would explain the whole eternal night bit...
MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
*BREATHES IN*
MORE LORE YEEESSSSSSSSS
This is the definition of a Shadow Caller.

YES! That remembered me the start of Dragon Age(good game too),it was a pretty good bad vibe, if that phrasing actually exist...And I didn't said you 'stole it', you were 'inspired by' such stories/games/movies, and I felt the vibe from that line. Thank you for answering too by the way.
Ooooh, now there's an interesting origin story for Nightmare Moon. Certainly a lot more interesting than the usual "the Nightmare was a completely separate evil entity" that usually gets bandied about. This version still keeps everything centred on Luna, even if it is her darkest parts, and also helps explain why Daybreaker is such a visceral and real fear for Celestia: because there very much is a Daybreaker lurking inside Celestia, waiting for the right moment to take the reigns.
It certainly brings a new perspective to those vamponies a few chapters back as well. I haven't forgotten about that little Checkov's Gun.
So that's how Nightmare moon came to be... Extremely believable.

You're absolutely right
/r/prequelmemes is leaking again....
Damned moon saffron!
ooo Summoners..my favorite...especially if they use something "evil" to do their work.

Totally! What a way to double one's power!
Years later
"Ah, you have finished your VIiP service, you are being transfered to-"
"I have seen beyond"
"I beg your pardon?"
"I am now General of the Eclipses"
Well we now know they use base 12. (58 nobody reaches 60 -- comment was under 4 years, would have been under 2 if decimal).
To know the truth behind nightmare moon and the first - and likely only in a long time - unicorn to be introduced in the Eclipse, she should feel honored.
But see, no one commented on how Sparkshower was the first one of the two to hear the Shadow coming. I wonder, maybe the next eclipse won't have a horn, but feathers perhaps?
I hope Luna gets heartened once she finds out an equestrian unicorn is learning her arts. To bring back a sliver of Her to the overwhelmingly solar magic of the current equestria.
My brain: Creeper!
aw maaaan
10684045
Oh, I knew you weren't accusing me of actual theft, I just facetiously use the word "steal" myself whenever I know I am very heavily borrowing something from another story/movie/book/videogame/etc.
10684157
They're all 57 ("not even fifty-eight"). And he said they never live *past* 60, meaning they never hit 61. Ergo, less than 4 years left.
Two words:
Informed Consent.
Not very impressed with the Eclipse here.
10684162
On the other hoof, Luna might be really upset that those secrets were passed onto a unicorn. She might have wanted that to die with the eclipse.
10684162
After all, “we know that this power is not restricted to the Children,” yes?
10684157
And hey. Only three survived to adulthood, and - if you’re counting - that’s twelve hooves.
And she STILL hasn't told them that they suffer the same side-effects of children born by mares who over-used their magic while pregnant.
10683910
yes vibes but the exorcists chapter is even closer
Now that's one hell of a plot twist.
10684162
And I'm very much looking forward to Lil's reaction when it finally sinks in that Ignacio isn't just showing off what he can do, but is offering to teach her everything that the Eclipse can do.
Sounds like the Warp from Warhammer
I like how glamerspear hasn't even noticed she was lewding Anon again
Can I just learn more about the Eclipse? like fuck the rest of the story (kidding I like it all) but holy hell is this cool AF.
~Reggie
10684178
It's very understandable, though. Imagine you're a member of the Eclipse. You have paid a bitter, bitter, heavy price to become what you are... and, it's a price you were not actually given a choice in paying or not. Still, you accept it, because despite what it demands of you, it grants some pretty amazing rewards.
Then plot happens, and you realize your entire line will die out soon. This doesn't actually bother you, as it's not something you're terribly proud of... but on the other hand, it's a thousand years worth of history about to be utterly wiped out. If you had to pay that kind of price, wouldn't you want to know that it meant something? Wouldn't you want to pass it on, if only to ensure that the sacrifices made for it weren't meaningless?
I feel like summoning demons to perform magic is like taking fentanyl as a sleep aid.
I gotta admit this wasn't on my list of potential explanations, and I see how Lily couldnt guess either. I had just assumed they used heavily laid on enchantments or runes.
I think Lily's gonna be freaking the fuck out
Maybe not now, but probably when she gets back
10684257
Yes I can understand why it was done. And as for what someone else said about Glamerspear not having a choice, sure she did -- she didn't have to keep trying to figure out what the Balladeer was doing. Essentially she asked to be inducted into this cadre whether she knew it or not as that was the only way for her to know. Unfortunately the only way it works is having that chance of possession. They couldn't have reliably done it more gently.
10683900
Hohoh, interesting theory, but... we already saw something particularly similar in this story already, didn't we?
I can see what you see not,
vision milky, then eyes rot.
When you turn they will be gone,
whispering their hidden song
Then you see what cannot be:
shadows move where light should be!
Out of darkness, out of mind,
cast down into the Halls of the Blind.
I love shadow magic. And I love that explanation for Nightmare Moon.
10683900
Or as a result of outcasts' desperation for water
10684326
Honestly, I wouldn't have caught that reference if you hadn't jogged my memory with the quote. I think this is by far my favorite explanation for Nightmare Moon and everything else.
10684375
I fell in love with that poem the moment I found it when I was a kid. But then I fell in love with the game as a whole. One of the best Christmas gifts I ever got.
The poem describes the Eclipse perfectly, I should add. They "see" magic as no other pony can in spite of their useless eyes and, as we just saw, they can whisper-sing into existence shadows that persist in the light. And they're probably all a little crazy.
....This feels like some fucking Cthulu type shit, not gonna lie.
Just got done playing some DOOM, time to get back to killing demons
