I’m sorry, but is that a reference to Lockheed Martin? Or is it something else entirely?

It is a reference to Lockheed-Martin.

Quite different than with Discord, placing him in the Ponyville did not bump him ahead of someone else in the totem pole. Here instead someone was indeed bumped off, some pony who had done exemplary service to the crown and the people did not get an opportunity. Instead it went to, from Celestia's PoV a pony who utterly failed in his duties.
This redemption has a cost to an unseen pony.
Im really happy that I paused reading the previous chapter and that this one came out just as I was about to finish it. It would have been torture to have to wait for that confrontation. Very well executed but the icepone on the hot seat.
Dunno about this new SGT but i guess well have to see what she’s like. In all honesty there’s no one else that’s been previously introduced to fill in the spot aside from the batpony hatchetiers and maybe that one gryphon girl from the mi amore cadensas. Which would be very entertaining but she’s also a fresh PVT so I wouldn’t expect her to be anywhere close to something so important. Tho the argument can be made that they have to go to Bronzehorn to ask him about joining and the Gryphon seems to always be close whenever Bronzehorn is in the picture.
Could be cool but I figure that you’re not writing this one chapter at a time and you already have a narrative plan that you’re following so I’ll just wait to see what you have in mind.
Ohh yes. Anon is going to becoming a POI to the Skunkworks?
If Ebonshield was going to be the third flyer, would Anon codename Mirage, as Riply?
But, I like the guitar intro.
...sorry, but I don't get it.
Also, did I liked more Kilfeather being put in his place or the night out with the quarterion?
YES
TAKE THAT KILFEATHER!

People who work in Intelligence, such as Sergeant Mirage, are generally referred to as spooks by military types.
Oh god, are we going to see a strip club or something? I'm certain if Ebonshield has any say in the matter, the odds of visiting more risqué locations is going to be high. That being said, a member of the Blue Chamber being seen in such a location is bound to cause huge drama, so Anon might be safe in the regard.
Then again, this is Ebonshield. She'll find a way to remind Anon of her proposition, I'm sure.
It seems Mirage's counter-intelligence role here is opposed to the Whirlwinds whole reason for being. The Royal Engineer did not build it in order hide it or to win a silly contest, its purpose is to demonstrate and popularize human technology and kickstart an industrial revolution. Writing that doorstopper will impress the lights of Twilight but it takes some flashy hardware to really sell the idea to everypony. I supposes it will be all the flashier after winning though, and nothing's more interesting than a secret.

As I see it, her current assignment isn’t to keep it secret for long -- just to help see off snoopers from the opposing teams and handle some general security until and just perhaps even during the Games. What happens after that is still up to Anon and of course the Princesses.
(I do find myself wondering just a bit what her chances of turning out to be a changeling in disguise might be; it’d kind of fit in with Anon’s “one guard of every type” theme, she’s in intelligence, exactly where you’d want to place a good infiltrator, and even her callsign is ‘Mirage’. Then again, that’s probably just my imagination running away with me... )
It’s also interesting to see Kilfeather actually behaving himself once suitably encouraged to. If this didn’t simply happen to be his one OOC day of the year, then maybe there’s actual hope for him yet.
Man, things are getting real interesting for the Games.
Missed a period.
Ah, so out-for-himself flyboy can act professionally (or like a pony with the slightest modicum of class whatsoever) when it is required of him.
Let's see how long he can keep up that facade. Honestly, if I had the interactions with him that His Lordship has, and had the insider knowledge of his actions and history from a former "romantic" partner that we got from Glamerspear, I would be hesitant - to the point of "not happening, not never no how" kind of hesitant - to let him work with my soldiers at all. All the high-speed training in the world won't make a unit effective if they know that their ... XO, I guess? Junior officer in charge? ... anyway, someone who outranks them and has much better connections than they have, and who has shown great willingness and ability to barracks-lawyer his way out of reprimands, is just waiting for an opportunity to get into their non-existent pants and then hop the next train for "Literally-Any-Other-Maresville." If they can't trust a ranking member of the team not to misuse them, then the whole team will fail, training or no.
TL;DR: As an officer, I wouldn't have let the LT onto my team. Here's hoping it works out better than I think it will.

Fixed!
who no kidding that was a intence meeting and i got chills for some reason when they mentioned mirage as a "spook"
Boy got put into his place like the spoiled brat he is.
Also the poor lieutenant Mirage Watching all of the heat and cold shoulders going on.
Who knew that the games would be so heated to the extent of having a reconnaissance team for the new out of the group VIP.
And so much work being placed of how well this "Car" is going to go through, Really the true test of endurance.
And I don't know about everyone on this but Mirage is sound a bit cute ngl, but i have the soft spot for the nerdy OP nerd tipe.
She obviously does not know the dangers of speculation and triggering doom flags...
Also disappointed. I hoped he would attempt to "Fire Killfeather... Out of a canon... Into the sun..."
Ah. Much more pragmatic than I anticipated. Good. Stupid evil is even more annoying and unbelievable than stupid good.
Holy crap, this chapter was so many kinds of satisfying!
Watching the Royal Engineer put Killfeather in his place so thoroughly was an unexpected but, oh-so pleasant surprise, especially that last bit where the little twerp was made to more or less hand over what could be considered a written confession of his wrongdoings should the matter ever come up in an official court martial.
Can’t wait to see what sort of shenanigans our little motley crew gets into during their beg night out!
Huh. I wonder if she's a changeling? Anon seems to be collecting one of every tribe, albeit unwittingly, and she is called "Mirage". Good post for a spy.
Wow, the Games are serious business. Still, they have every advantage now!
Carmen as a visitor to the Gala... Wait, is this the S1 Gala? The mane 6 will be there if so... interesting...
10745335
The Crystal Empire has returned in Everyday Life With Guardsmare's timeline, so we're significantly after the Season 1 gala.
10744884
The recon thing doesn't surprise me. Equestria isn't as security tight as most Earth nations. Such a thing here would be considered spying/cheating.
Royal Ingenieur vs Feather brained Val:
The verbal trashing was delices.
Awesome chapter, I loved it. Was also thinking the same as Luminous Lead.
Mirage... hmm.
Pretty satisfying takedown of Val. I would have preferred it go further but hey, still got plenty of time before the big event. A slight chance remains that he'll manage to really step in it and invoke some sweet sweet wrath!
Well, that was entertaining. I enjoy seeing Killfeather put in his place as much as anyone else, but I can't help but wonder if working under the Royal Engineer might knock some sense into him.....................Probably not, but who knows what curveballs are heading towards this unit. Speaking of Curveballs, I can't wait to see how this night out is going to play out and spectacularly go wrong. I'm betting on running into Honor's old husband at a bar, can't wait to find out!
Good chapter, I honestly kinda hope Valiant can be reformed.
Its the new mare that's gonna be the wild card, she's probably gonna try butt head with Ebon, but think that's too obvious and maybe instead there will more of a conflict of leadership with Honour
10745591 Best way to solve those problems: eliminate the source.
I dont trust it.
10745601 From what he said it sure sounded like it. And his attempted rape of one of the characters and the pile of evidence that his underlings are perfectly okay with gangraping a female is more than enough in my mind to warrant death, preferably a slow one in public.
Yeeessssssss!~ The wordsss FUEL usssss.~
10745613
That wasn’t my reading of that chapter at all. Much as a manipulative, cocky, abusive, self-serving shithead as Kilfeather is, gang rape seems beyond the pale. At most, I think he and his would’ve badly harassed her, maybe try to pressure her into his bed, but out and out rape? He’s an asshole, but he’s not evil.
10745637 I pity your innocence and ignorance.
10745639
I’m sorry you feel that way.
10745643 Okay how have you NOT figured it out by now? Lilly said that he tried to get her to do something she did not want to do with his whole crew, which she later said would have made her a whore, and when she refused he got violent and tried to force her to do it.
What about that does NOT scream gangrape?
10745650
I can see how you come to that conclusion, but if you'll entertain some thought on this from my seat as the caret butler and tense editor of the story, there's a degree of unreliable narration in play. Lily is being vague about her past, and Val's sleazyness is being played up to the maximum possible extent. Val is definitely an asshole, and he knows he's an asshole, and he's a rather despicable scoundrel at that -- but there's a line between someone who is a disgusting or revolting individual and true, undeniable evil...
10745655 I fail to see a difference. If one is not beneficial to society in any way, shape, or form that is one thing. To be actively putting forth effort to do damage to others for no reason other than self satisfaction, is evil. Literally.
And evil needs to be destroyed.
Furthermore, there is no other possible conclusion I could come to given what you wrote. None. Nada. Nothing. Literally nothing else comes to mind and I have been trying to think of one. Every speck of evidence provided to the reader leads to this one conclusion. And I do not appreciate the condescending tone you took when you wrote, "I can see how you came to that conclusion..." There is LITERALLY no other conclusion that can be drawn from the presented evidence. Which means that you want the reader to think this. Your statement is highly insulting when your writing is having the desired effect.
The reason I am taking this so seriously is because I am an employee of one of the largest security firms on our planet. I have dedicated my life to keeping people safe and to see this kind of abuse of power is sickening and beyond infuriating to me. It makes my blood boil because I have known people like this and from my experiences, they are half a step away from murder. If they think they can get away with anything, they will, no matter how degenerate, sick, disgusting, or morally or ethically bankrupt. There is no limit for people like that and there should be no limit to what can be done to those monsters.
Does anyone else imagine Kilfeather's voice as Phil Hartman?
10745825
“Hi, I’m Troy McKilfeather. You might remember me from such headlines as “Newstirrup Noble Knockout” and “Flight Leader or Philanderer”.”
10745340
Oop. And there are repeated mentions of the changeling attack. In my defense, it was REALLY late when I wrote that. TIredness must have been messing with my brain.
Mane six could still show up, though, perhaps... But not necessarily, I suppose.
10745639
You’ve reached borderline if not outright harassment.
I have to say I love how there is almost always a chapter up monday afternoon
10745655
10745664
I never really saw Killfeather as evil — per se; just another posturing, preening jackass who’s convinced himself that he’s far more important than he really is. Life is a game to him and he’s the star player; In other words, just your typical campus jock who’s convinced himself that they’re God’s gift to the world.
The crap he tried to pull with Sparkshower was particularly bad but In all fairness to the Lieutenant (loathe as I am to be ) I never got a rapey vibe from his ‘request’ at the bridge. Dumb-shit as Killfeather may be, even he wouldn’t have the balls to pull THAT kind of crap with a guardmare serving as a bodyguard to a ranking member of the Royal Court.
At the very worst, I figure Killfeather and his pals would have spent their time trying to get Sparkshower to loosen up with food, drinks and tales of past exploits and adventures, just enough to make her more receptive to his advances; which is still colossally shit thing to do anyways.
I think this chapter shows that for all his posturing and sense of self-importance, Killfeather knows that he’s not invincible, nor politically crafty enough to outmaneuver someone like the Royal Engineer who has proven himself to be less than impressed by either the Lieutenant or his flyboy charm.
Whew boy, started reading this with some leftover bleariness (IRL bleariness, not the leftover from last chapter). But that talk with Kilfeather woke me the fuck up with energy to spare like a slap to the face, except I was grinning the entire time.
Daaaaayum, what a response!
10745972
Yeah I agree here. Kilfeather likely was trying to single out Artemis away from Lily. Since Lily would always paint him badly. Definitely a sleazy thing to do but no where near rape territory. I don’t see how he could ever get away with raping a serving Guardsmare and would be unrealistic to his character imo. Kilfeather would have to be a giant moron to think that would work.
It’s much more believable that Kilfeather is a relatively competent CO but has dubious personal morals and is willing to bend the rules to his personal gain then straight up evil villain.
Kilfeather reminds me of the captain I served under during my first combat tour of Iraq in '05-'06.said former captain should be released from the U.S. federal prison system sometime in 2024.
Being questioned by FBI agents is an experience I'd rather never repeat.
Yay! My favorite chappy is next! AHH so excited!
We get a moment between 2 of them and I want to see everyone's reactions!
10746213
I'm glad you're excited, but that's the chapter after the next.

To expand on the writer's truncated answer, calling someone from Intelligence a "spook" is like calling a blood test nurse a "vampire". It describes their job role, but in a derogatory way. Intelligence has the job of hiding away in the back, then "something happens", everyone knows it is their handiwork, but there is no record, no paper trail, no evidence. And if you want to keep your job, you will INSIST there is no evidence. Sometimes, that clear and bizarre void of evidence IS why it is known to be their handiwork. Effectively, a poltergeist or haunt, something spooky, came about and caused things to happen, a ghost. Certainly not one of their co-workers, because saying it was a co-worker is legally treason in many places. Hence, they are "spooks". They also investigate internally, which is probably even more scary to many officers than the actions they do externally.
