Sometimes stories make me feel like I'm missing out. This one makes me feel like I should be stretching more.
Yoga is both body and mind when you really try. But these lessons remind me of my old gramps lessons for cooking, hunting and thinking. A very nice compromise for this sort of teaching.
You must first know what you do not know.
You put your left leg in, your left leg in, your right leg in and fall all about.
Wonder how far along the training is holding on only by the tail?
10726760
That would be Zecora level.
That lesson is actually great, and I hope more people will heed the words, for if people actually started to question things around them, the world would be a better place than it is now.
Finally managed to get up to date with this fic! Took a while ey?
I liked Eb's explanations of asceticism vs hedonism. Very interesting point of view.
This is a good lesson, more people could stand to learn it.
To learn you must first let your Pride go and be willing to ask, then to perform the task.
Nice

A proper Epicurean would shout in your face over the all-too-common misconception of the meaning of "hedonism."
Although it's strange how the Stoics and Epicureans saw each other as bitter rivals. I always considered epicurianism as a rational subset of stoicism.
Purity now reminds me a bit of Goblin Slayer's master and his teachings of being fearless and acting as a way to surpass challenges...no power just action.
God damn, this is great stuff. Bobbles, you are a treasure.
10726871
yyyeeaaah I failed philosophy xP I had to quickly google the terms as soon as I read them in this chapter.
10726920
Thank you very much, but TheManFromAnotherTime is the treasure; I'm just the messenger.
Ebon is my favorite character. Wise but not insufferable, deadly but not violent, competent but not overpowered, etc. How do you manage this?
Poor girl's as in over her head as her hooves are.
This week on ELWG we get philosophical
I don't know, taking a class about the wisdom of the yaks sounds like fun. Just spend all day smashing things, good times.
Bruce Lee was big on being a philosopher first and a warrior second. The warrior bit was significantly more attention-grabbing, is all, and he was smart enough to work with that.
10727142
Like how the instructor was smashing his students!
10727142
Yak best at smashing. You would never be able to come close to Yak. Although Yak might be impressed with the sonic rain-nuke RD did to AJ's Barn.
Purity says she’s a terrible teacher, that is the reason she has not ascended to be the Eighth of her temple.
... Seems a damn good first lesson to me!
Purity teaches a wonderful lesson, one I have yet to fully internalize after, I fear, a dozen-odd years of the American education system have taught me its contrary. It is terrifyingly difficult to admit ignorance; even though I know it is not truly defeat, it feels like it ought to be.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm suddenly seized with the urge to look up my old exercise and stretching routines.
Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude...

With a reference to everyone's favorite wacky failed ersatz rubber experiment, Honour confirms that, like every Civ V player putting off researching naval techs until halfway into the Renaissance, Equestria has been investing in the important parts of technology. Iron working? Absolutely not. Advanced non-newtonian liquid silicone derivatives? Friggin' bring em on, baby.
10726753
Or rather, you must first know THAT you do not know.

The point of organized, sect-based Oriental martial arts, is that their philosophy is shared mentally and physically. Anyone can train their body to beat other bodies, flesh crashing into flesh. But to be a disciple is to take in the teachings, mindset, and perspective of the masters who add to the art throughout its inheritance. Creating a temperament that pairs well with the bodily training.
I love Ebonshield more and more with each passing chapter.
Sports...
Uuugh...monday...
It always is...
Pfffhahahahahahahaaaaaa... erthponies... so fun
Point for the thestral!
Uff..
Ebonshield is such a well writen Charakter. I love her ^^
Yo, Honor, you gotta turn those unknown unknowns into known unknowns before you can be shown how to make them known knowns.
Now I'm anticipating Honor dodging opponents' strikes like Neo from The Matrix: watching calmly as it misses by inches.
She's a really good teacher.

edit 2 just deleted my group i dont feel right having a group when their is already a group i prefer to make groups for fics a that nobody touched yet
This chapter has become a favorite of mine. The philosophies spoken are valid and provide the option to think to the reader.
Are you a philosopher by chance, Bobbles?
10730326
I would not consider myself one by education. TheManFromAnotherTime, who wrote the original greentext, borrowed these philosophies from the late, great Bruce Lee, I believe.

I'm a computer programmer with a B.Sc., but I did take some philosophy and cognitive-sciences courses in university. Some of that does get in occasionally. For example, in Chapter 106, when blind Ignacio asks Lily & Artemis to describe "red" to him, he's effectively discussing one aspect of the issue of qualia, i.e. we can agree that a certain colour is "red" but how do I know that the "red" I see is the same as the "red" you see? Or how do you explain the psychological experience of "redness" to someone who has no sight?
However, with respect to Ebonshield and the philosophy of her Stellar Dance, many of the phrases she tosses out are lifted from Bruce Lee, especially when she quotes her master Draxon, (e.g.:"A good Dancer does not become tense, but ready" is from a line in "Enter the Dragon", substituting "martial artist" with "Dancer"). There's also a bit of Islamic Sufi mysticism, like the parable about climbing the mountain to God in Chapter 115. And the supposed founder of her school, "Maestro Roma de Balj", is named after the Sufi mystic Rumi. From the FAQ:
As for the Dancers' philosophy of teaching, I'm afraid that's my own invention. I remember this being a tough chapter to write because I hadn't yet figured out much about the details of the school's teachings; of course the poses are mostly from Yoga, with a bit of added fanciful contortion. But the basic idea of encouraging students to ask questions and the teachers actually giving answers is a subversion of the typical kung fu movie trope of the ignorant students struggling to learn physical challenges from mute teachers who refuse to give hints, as probably best seen in "The 36th Chamber of Shaolin".

It's hardly limited to the education system; as a full grown adult programmer, it's still something I struggle with daily. I'm getting up there in the years at last, and there's a new crop of up-and-coming developers who were trained on concepts much newer than I was. It's difficult sometimes, because I'm the senior; I'm supposed to be smarter, to know more, but even if their experience is less, their education is also fresher. Sometimes, they just know a lot more about the newer tech than I do.
In which case, being a good developer means admitting that I don't know the concepts in question, and I'm not good enough to, say, watching some quick tutorial and instantly grasp it all because of my prior experience. I've got to be humble enough to come at things like a beginner.... and that's not always as easily done as said, when you're increasingly supposed to be the veteran of the group.
Granted, because of how fast the programming field is developing, it's often an extreme case. But my point is, I think it applies across the board. Being humble enough to admit when you know absolutely nothing about a topic is absolutely critical to keep your skills from stagnating.

I actually was doing stretches reading this chapter. I hadn’t done my morning warm ups yet
I love how all of Ebonshield's lessons are usually expressed through some physical activity that tells us just how the characters are feeling through metaphor, such as when she was struggling to stay afloat at the Spa Delecarlia, or here.
That's deceptively clever. So many people/ponies are determined to figure things out themselves, because they're excepted to not need help, but sometimes asking for it is the best choice.
Sorry Honour, but you did ask for this.
And now I'm laughing at the mental image of a scrawny sickly looking hipster pony with a man-bun spouting watered down platitudes from the Yak equivalent of Hinduism.
10726753
“The ancient Oracle said that I was the wisest of all the Greeks. It is because I alone, of all the Greeks, know that I know nothing.”
Wonder if Yaks actually do this or if they somehow just convinced ponies they did.
11046049
"YAKS PERFORM ANCIENT YAK YOGA TECHNIQUE!"
"Uhm....are you sure-"
"YAKS DO FOR YEARS! NOW YOGA, YAK WAY!"
Pretty sure a lot of Honor Bound would be fixed by getting laid...
10726734
I know that feeling.
Being someone unable to serve because of a medical condition, in a large office full of veterans, often made me feel like I missed out on something important.
Like, I missed out on some sort of formative stage of life.
What Honor needs is a Stallion to stretch her internal for maximum effect
