That's neat world-building.
I wonder what pony moon-pope is gonna do.
What humans most sacrifice? Easy, we don't sacrifice anything…because we are at the edge of the blade, and rip our winning from exiting the circle of life of been the scavengers in the lowest place. In a way we are like the eclipse but in a different context. We are and are not Apex Predators, we have potential to be and improve and our biggest asset is our will to adapt and our mind to improve.
But using it reveal our sacrifice, and return the edge of the sword. Gaining power make us extremely susceptible to get drunk to it, specially if it is too much, and we can went into extremes. Like Anon demonstrate on how he is set on not make his invention be build in blood, he is easily sway because of that. He is like a child that can be manipulated if used the right words.
And if he goes to far in the other end, he can be twisted and in the worse case even turn into a monster like so many have and could become.
And a third and even worse case is the path of chaos where he could just lose his mind embrace despair and not even Discord would know what he is capable of doing, maybe even he might start to fear him, for he knows Anon could spring a trap not even he could escape.
So I say we don't pay a price…because we are on itself the price we pay, our strength can become our worse enemy and our shadows can become our face if push or press to far.

Whelp, guess that's gonna stick now. Can't go back to "Reverend Mother Superior" after reading that.
Anon is just never going to get to do what he came down here to do is he?
And I thought human politics was a bitch.
Soon as i read 'Reverend Mother' all i could think was "The Benne Gesserit witch must leave"

"I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."
10609216
You were expected that moon pope was gonna be Luna herself, but it is I…DIO!
Sorry couldn't resist
10609216
Depends upon the type of Pope she is. Probably treat every pony like a child that is prone to misbehavior.
Ahh, it is the Crocodylus pontifex of the bat ponies. Futurama calls it the space pope.
Let's see, information in spanish is a female word, so the word to use is "incompleta"; We say "Bien, carto" not Bueno, Carto.
A human rock band? From Equestria’s moon?
A very deep chapter. Unless one is a jack of all trades master of non one has one or a few specific strength and a lot of short comings.
10609287
Fixed the gendering, but I think Carto is doing good, rather than well.
Oh shit! Something about to go down. Glad how you're making the batponies culture loosely referenced to Mexican culture.
10609320
"Good, Carto" translate to "Bien, Carto", similarly "Great, Carto" would be "Muy bien, Carto", "You are doing good/well, Carto" would be "Lo estás haciendo bien Carto" Bueno and Bien is the same word in used different situations, good and well does not translate in spanish, i mean, they are not used in the same situations in english, "Bueno, Carto" trasnlated in english would be "ok then, Carto", the syntax and context are different, here Bueno does not mean good or well at all.
10609340
It's tricky to balance between the needs of an English-speaking audience and correct translations, but in this case, you've made a compelling argument, and I think the detail may be minor enough and readily translatable enough to move from Bueno to Muy bien, so I've made that change.
10609234
We've traded several things. We don't get magic, for one. Additionally our bipedal height comes with decreased stability compared to quadrupeds, meaning it's harder to stand in place for long and it's easy to be knocked over. Similarly to Sparkshower our technology means that we do not tend to hone the natural gifts we have- only a small fraction of humans work as exhaustion hunters in the modern day.
10609401
Don't forget that we technically are born incomplete, unlike any other species that are born fully form, we are medical and technically speaking, the worse outcome in a regular birth, our heads can't sustain our bodies, our cranium is still developing and crack and the only thing we can do by sheer instinct is swim (no really a new born baby in water will intermediately swim if in contact to water) so on nature our birth can be view as incomplete or fail because were at our weakest at that moment.
$20 says Mother Superior bonks heads with Ignacio. Immediately. And frequently. He's irrascible, and sidesteps standard batpony societal conventions, so... I bet they have to respect each other, but neither is actually beholden to the other.
10609282
She must be reptillian, as 10609285 pointed out; that would be her sacrifice for the swanky hat.
I think the worst that will happen is this:
The best is this:
Anon's most deadly foe has arrived. The batpony politician!
10609363
I don't know what to make of this comment. I know iridium features in Stardew Valley, but it's a real element. It'd be too expensive to make any tools out of it in real life (or in Equestria) like you do in Stardew, but if you just need something dense to copy with magic this could definitely work.
It's not like that's a difficult answer.
Their price is to stand vigil as all before them falls and becomes as dust.
To stand before a mountain, and in the metaphorical blink of an eye, see a valley.
Perhaps Anonymous will bust out some sick moves when the training actually begins.
5 Bits that the bat ponies have steel.
10609264
The Moon extends life. The Moon expands consciousness. The Moon is vital to space travel. The Batpony Guild and its sorcerors, who the Moon has mutated over 1,000 years, use the orange moon dust, which gives them the ability to fold shadows. That is, magic to any pony of Equestria without horning.
No matter what they tell you, the moon is not made from cheese, nor does the orange dust come from snack foods.
10609619
And never mind Damascus or the like. Given the language, a form of Toledo steel, ideal for weaponworking.
10609618
Or he'll be really sharp with his mind, but all the martial grace of Steve Urkel.
10609619
Holy Toledo! I don't think I'll take that bet.
10609805
Sucker's bet. SOme form of moon based ore I'll bet that is turned into steel.
Oh good. Marcos has someone even higher up the totem to throw their weight around.
10609325
Mexican reconquista
10609878
You suggesting the bat ponies have a Lunar Forge, like one at Silent Moons camp in Skyrim?
Bet 500 bits that the bats have access to metal we'd call fictional.
Adamantium
Mithril
Orichalcum
Unrelated to the currently posted chapter as I have read the pastebin, but I just have to say that never before have I looked forward to the Grand Galloping Gala the way I do in this story.
Never have I actually been hyped up about it.
Just, damn, am I'm excited to see that continue.
At this rate it'll be next Christmas before he gets to actually train.
10609965
Not exactly. I said that because the ore literally originates from the Moon, not Equestria. But consider that they have been on the moon for almost 1000 years. They have explored the moon throughly above and below. Digging and no doubt experimenting. Ebonshield's extendable and launchable blades, which I swear he got the idea from Assassin's Creed, are a great example of that experimentation. So it's not too far a jump in logic to assume that they discovered the recipe for steel perhaps. But only made it in small quantities given that their armor is much like leather from what we have seen so far.
But, perhaps only the best are given those weapons as Ebonshield has been referred to as Siete. Seven. But that's just a guess.
Apologies for going overboard but I have been putting a fair bit of thought into it and I am very eager to see how this goes.
Wonder what the chances are a randomly used nickle iron meeteorite will have the right contamination of chromium etc to make the result stainless steel?
As for needing more heat, use a bigger mirror on your Solar Forge? Not that it makes it actually hotter, just that it allows to compensate for higher thermal losses with temperature closer to illumination temperature?
10609878
Or Luna Titanium.
10609619
The only steel they could have is Fe/Si steel instead of the standard Fe/C steel. Not sure how good how that compares. Because the Moon would likely not have the spare carbon in the form of coke or abundant lumber (as charcoal) to invest in steel production. Even chondrites don't have that much carbon in them (5% max).
It's much more likely that it's an iron alloy. As said earlier, meteoritic iron alloys could get rather close to stainless steel.
10610450
That is highly unlikely given to make that alloy, you need advanced equipment far beyond even equestria's industry right now. But hey, magic could easily render my statement null.

I was starting to get worried that nobody was going to recognize the I Love Lucy reference, and it was making me feel old.
10609878
I didn't realise it at first, but this reminds me of the Battletech/Mechwarrior universe, where the self-exiled Clans are divided into several, well, clans (like the batponies are into houses), have better technology than the original realm's Inner Sphere factions, and have a faction that wants to conquer the original realm (they are also even called Crusaders).
anyone else see this?
i.imgflip.com/24bfki.jpg
Hmmm, a high priest it feels like. This could either go good, or really bad.
Equestria can't help them here. If any of them say a word that she disagrees with, they will face the consequences alone.
Ah, but just because it isn't right, doesn't make it any less true.
What Celestia and Luna gave up when they became Alicorns?
They gave up their freedom.
For an Alicorn Princess is expected to lead.
They gave up their personal feelings.
For they must act for the best of the Kingdom.
And the most prized and coveted sacrifice...
They gave up their mortal lives.
For an immortal will outlive their family,
they will watch their lovers die of age,
they will see themselves slowly close their hearts to the world,
or risk never ending pain.
Those who are immortal and decided to continue living, have the strongest of wills and hearts...
or have fallen to madness.
Immortality is the slowest torture of eternity.
10609234
I feel we sacrifice a lot. Most humans alive today probably wouldn't last a week or so if they were magically dropped off in some desolate part of a planet
Our industry is literally slowly boiling the planet
As the society gets more complex we get more alone
Etc
10610451
Carbon doesn't just come from nothing. The trees you reference pulled that carbon from the air, which in turn came from volcanic processes within the Earth. The moon was created from an impact during the early formation from the Earth, and thus has a VERY similar composition. While the process would have to be wildly different, than simply burning coal (which wouldn't exist on the moon) getting carbon from lunar rocks is perfectly viable.
10610535
Glad to see that someone else recognized the reference.
