Now THAT was pod racing-...
ah, that still happened.
Hmm. Stuck enlisted waiting for a dude who doesn't appreciate you
Or go officer in the crystal empire
Or get a chance to become one with the best armored pegasus unit
Heck, staying with anon?
God I love this story
More STRIKE than Fire, and with a noise worthy of Vulcan itself?
And then the remembering relationships and recriminations.
How this going to be repaired, and is Anon even going to be allowed to use a medical snake camto examine inside if theres no description on record?
Who is up for some Kenny Loggins?
DANGER ZONE!
Jesus not only did Artemis go on a physical rollercoaster but an emotional one as well, and she took us all along for the ride.
She did not deserve to get her heart broken like this, any guy would kill to have a girl who sacrificed so much for so little in return, but I guess Huckleberry was just blind to that.
I keep getting blindsided by just how well written this is. Like Artemis, I knew she’d broken up with Huckleberry, and yet, also like Artemis, I’d all but forgotten that in the rush of excitement. Once again, bravo author, and again, thank you Bobbles for bringing this to Fimfic! Friggin’ magnificent!
...Even a rocket's gotta come in for a landing sometime.

She's certainly a strong pony, both physically and mentally. Like Honour said, I'm certain she'll make it through.

Yeah Sparks... been there my good mare. Been there. Just take it one day, one step at a time. There'll be someone else eventually. Just don't let this moment stop you from enjoying life in the end.

I'd like to point out that confirms that Lily and therefore Equestrians have a concept over what a rocket is and maybe how one might function. Perhaps Equestrians have some rudimentary magical or black gunpowder rockets? Not only that, but Lily also mentioned something else a couple of chapters ago:
Ponies have a concept of what Warp Speed is. Maybe the Schola, and the Royal Academy have more in-depth courses into hypothetical physics that we've learned... or maybe someone knows more about Hyperspace Hyperwars than they'd like to let on.
Oh just wait until they tell it to the Engineer and he regales them with stories of fighter jets. And uses sparks as an example why and how technology can propel equestria oh so much towards the future - and for what matters for the military, total technological dominance.
10649845
Staying with Anon promises to be in the forefront of experimental tech development and all the crazy shenanigans that entails in equestria. I wouldn't be surprised if sooner or later the four were promoted to his full time military helpers just due their experience with him and his foibles. Also harem
Alright then!, i mention "The rocketeer" if nobody else is.
Although this is a bomb and not a rocket, I pictured her feeling this excited once she got things under control:

They also have comic books and Sci-Fi. Also *warp* is another term for Teleporting, or Blinking, but there's a whole lot of science (thaumaturgy?) regarding that as well.
OMG Sparkster from Rocket Knight Adventures. One of the main attacks is where bounce around inside corridors. The first and the sequel where amazing while the third was sortof a let down. The secrets in the sequel (which required playing and winning the skippable intro) were awesome.

It may not account for the rules of the upper levels of society.
Imagine a random person from, say, the Us, was given a position in the House of Lords in the UK or became some advisor to the king of Saudi Arabia.
Would there really be a real way to learn all the intricacies of how to behave in such a position?
Something along the lines of "allowing your bodyguard to sit next to you in a theater means you intend to sleep with her" even though I would like to have the bodyguard close to me in case of, you know, someone decides to kill me.
But then ponies assume you sleep with your guards anyway, just because they are assigned to you.
awwww, poor thing

I agree that it would make sense for some such program to exist, and that certainly an extra-dimensional castaway would be at the top of the list for such a program. I still think, however, that there are factors that would make a full understanding difficult, chief among them being how similar our society is to their's while not being the same. I could see Anon failing to prioritize learning the minutia of polite society because, at a glance, it appears to be pretty similar to ours, albeit with a different form of government and a mish-mash of technological/cultural levels. This seems even likelier when you factor in his stated workaholic tendencies, and the fact that he was probably dealing with some pretty heavy emotional baggage for at least the first stretch of his stay.
I don't know. Perhaps I'm making excuses for the character, and thus the author, because I so enjoy the story, but, at least to me, his lack of social knowledge isn't yet testing the suspension of disbelief.
It's really easy for me to say "leave him he's no good" but that kind of mentality makes for a long road of never finding love. Relationships require work. We aren't puzzle pieces that will just fit together, we have to mold ourselves for out partner and they to us in order for a long lasting relationship to occur.
It's hard for any party outside the relationship or inside it to be able to objectively say "there is nothing salvageable, it's time to move on"
Looking at the evidence, I want to say it appears as though what Sparks wants out of life and what Huckle want are too different for their relationship to work. I think Huckles traditional lens of life is also clashing with Sparks. The question, though, isn't if their goals are different, it's how much they're willing to compromise with their goals and still be happy.
I would really like to see Artemis and Anon go on a date with each other. It doesn't have to be romantic or end with intimacy, but I think Anon needs to dip his toes back into the pool and Sparks needs to learn whether or not she truly loves Huckle as a unique person, or from necessity due to a lack of options. She can learn then whether she and him need to work on their relationship or if it was a poor choice from the beginning.

I'd play that game.
Oh wait. I did.

Honestly, I’m not so sure about the usefulness of this weapon. Unless you’re trying to kill dragons with it, it’s overkill for most situations. And using it during an actually battle has a high risk of accidentally killing some of your allies who stumble into your path.
And considering that the first training season could've sent Sparks to the infirmary or the morgue, this gift really should've come with an instruction manual. Then again, maybe Major Growler never figured out how to use it probably. Would explain why she gave it away so easily.
Overall I think this gift is far to generous. You don’t give away magical family heirlooms just because you want someone to join your team or because that person humiliated someone you don’t like. No, there’s something more going on her. Growler already knows that she wants something from Sparks in the near future. And whatever it will be, it's going to be something huge.
Just a friendly reminder that all Huckleberry had to do to not lose this awesome mare was to write a letter once in a while and at least give Canterlot a try. Oh and not making a fool out of himself in front of her VIP.
This guy is an idiot.
This earthpony had it all... And throw it all away for false pride. I hope she get a colt worth a badass and empathy driven mare like her.
Great chapter
That one impressive boom-stick ♡
Have to say the choice of music in the middle was spot-on, not only for what was happening, but Sparks' personality.
If Anon sees that, he may want to reverse-engineer it and leap ahead into jet-propelled flight.
Oh god... reverse engineering it to make an improvised Iron Man flight system!

Lol, cue metallic voice
“I am Anonaman”

Aah, wow. I remember seeing this trailer when I was a kid.
I never actually watched it, but I still want to.

I think the biggest problem with Artemis and Huckleberry's relationship is that it seems like Artemis is willing to compromise her own life too much and Huckleberry is not compromising enough. I think Artemis must learn that compromising that much for someone likely is not healthy, and that a proper healthy relationship is a compromise between two parties, rather than 1 dragging the other along.
Just a couple more gifts from the Growler family and they can start playing Quidditch.
Artemis is a self-made mare. Her compromises are not Huck's contributions.
10650245
Yep, they were in a row boat, but she was the only one rowing.
10650388
While Huck had his oars jammed into the lakebed.
Wow, did not expect to have Vaughan Williams's Fantasia on Tallis come up right then.
10650245 I can certainly agree to this to a degree. But at the same time, she wouldn't have had to compromise herself so much if Huck had at least made a token effort to meet her a quarter of the way instead of right in the middle. Yes, relationships require work and require two people to be putting in the effort, but its hard to do when the other party apparently doesn't actually care enough to make said effort. She was willing to (and did!) do all of these things, and Huck simply didn't care. And now we're starting to see that it wasn't just Artemis joining the Royal Guard that made Huck not care. Apparently he didn't care about all of the compromising she was doing even before she decided she wanted to join the Guard.
10650245
Agreed, at least from what we've seen so far.
It would be interesting to see what Hucklechucks contributions to the relationship have been, if any, but from our Favourite PegaPones side of the story so far, it's basically been her giving up everything except her desire to fly for the Guard (and even then, making Career Sacrifices), to be there for Huck.
Also,
This was the first thing that came to mind when she got the hang of the Rocket Lance.

Pity. Would of been a funny joke if she was. Wonder if anon likes sabaton
10649853
She'll definitely grow from the pain and rise back up stronger than ever. Artemis Sparkshower, pretty much as close to a prodigy in this story as one can get, finally thinking for herself and her future with 100% positive support this time around? VIP spot in the History books, ahoy!
10649866
10650549
Oh there is no doubt she'll make it through this and grow stronger. She is quickly becoming my favorite character and I can't wait to see her grow from this and become a better and more resilient person.
Rocket Knight Adventures nostalgia yeahhhh
10650412
Exactly. Artemis needs to come to the realization that her relationship seemed to be heavily skewed. She sacrificed a lot to make it work, and without any real reason beyond wanting to maintain the relationship. Huckleberry seeming to be unable to communicate with Artemis even though they have been in a relationship for so long ridiculous in my opinion.
She's got a couple people who can relate and speak from experience to help her at least. Both Honour and the RE seem to have gone through some rough relationships in the past so she won't have to deal with it alone.
"And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
'Til touchdown brings me 'round again to find
I'm not the mare they think I am at home
Oh, no, no, no
I'm a rocket mare
Rocket mare, burning out her fuse up here alone"
What marvelous treasures the Growler family must have if Major Growler can give away an awesome rocket lance as a casual gift. Unless, of course, it's not a casual gift and she wants a big favor in return.
Sparkshower has sacrificed so much for Huckleberry to have him not care, to have him think so little of her that he can't even be bothered to write occasionally or visit her in Canterlot. It's for the best that Sparkshower break up with him.
Ah, and the other horseshoe drops. Poor Artemis.
One of my favorite classic console games.
10649899
Well, they have fireworks... Those are rockets.
"Rocket" as a term originated in Italian, and... was about sewing bobbins and vaguely the female sex. An open cylinder that took stuff and moved up and down on it. Kind of ironic how "Rocket"'s imagery has switched from female to male, but hey, language evolution! But the term existed prior to electricity, as any tube that could go up under its own power, which included things like mechanical weaving machines... and fireworks. So of course they'd know rockets, Glamorspear knows firework-imitation spells after all.
Ouch... MEDIC!
Artemis Sparkshower, "guided" roket System..
Aí, that thing is awesome!
Dmamndnit, i want to comfor here while i am tearing up myself
Reading about Artemis crying her heart out fills me with hatered for that one track mind Hucckleberry. I wish someone bucked him in the face for hurting poor Sparky like that!
Haha. Ofc a militaristic noble family would be named after a rocket launcher.
I was wondering where "Growler" had come from.
