Uh-oooohhhhhhhh.
I love Ebonshield. But now me thinks her galavanting around has gotten her in trouble. Also, stop corrupting the innocent country mare, she can't handle batpony levels of lewd~
Marcos Del Monte, here to see Ebonshield about his juice consignment?
Dude, names usually don't get translated, even if there is a translation of it, if i was called Cross, i will always be Cross in any country, including mine which speaks spanish, people wouldn't call me Cruz, which is the translation for cross, so spanish is the native languague of batponies here, and Ébanoescudo is no right, it should be Ébano Escudo, separated, we don't put together words to form new ones, so you either call our batpony Ébano Escudo or Ebonshield "Sergeant Ébano Escudo:Sargento Ébano Escudo" or "Sergeant Ebonshield:Sargento Ebonshield".

I will defer here to TheManFromAnotherTime for his thoughts and considerations about naming conventions with the batponies, and the decision to translate (or transliterate) their names.
Makes you wonder what Sparkypone thought all those noises were in the first place.
You know, Ebo should be worry that her companions weren't the only ones that heard that. Man she would REEALLY get eggs on her face if it turns out Anon heard her too.
So either he is a deep sleeper, and didn't hear, is a light sleeper, and DID hear, was awake and still hear, or simple hear her but didn't put to much mind to the subject, and at most just congratulate her for finding a coltfriend, and wish her well like a good friend. Not complete sure if Equestria has or not one stand nights as well.
Plus after last night she would probably felt embarrass and a bit of a hypocrite for causing yet another loud sound as well…and possible ruin a room too.

Pony names aren't like human names, however.
It's hard to translate names like William, Richard, Sophie, Marcos or Ivan. Even if they have real etymological translations with actual meaning behind them.
But names like Tempest? Twilight? Rainbow? Sunshine? Pie? For ponies, it might be pretty natural to translate pony names, as these often have very current and undestandable meaning behind them. A bit more on naming conventions in Equestria and beyond will be explored in upcoming chapters.
Huh... I've never seen the Live Reader Count reach 68 before...
I'd say that means you're doing well.
10535130
There is another possibility of course...
That Sparkshower has that good of an ear. After all, being a 19D Armoured Scout requires her to have well-honed senses, which she's demonstrated to have at several other times.
There's also the case that it might be easier to hear what is happening on a room besides yours than on one in an entirely different floor.
InB4 this is Ebonshield's brother, that would be funny.
Ejaculate and evacuate, Shoot 'n' scoot
10535190
Nut 'n' Bolt
10535170
It possible yeah
10535190
Smash Da Ho 'n' Nigerundayo .
Is Marcos her CO?
10535306
We'll find out soon!
Wait ... they have Spanish accents and dialects? I thought the bat ponies in this story were, like, eastern European. How did I get that wrong?
10535128
"By Celestia, that is one tartarus of a dream Ebonshield is having"
10535108
Translating names really depends on the person. A lot of people who move somewhere with a different language translate their names when dealing with the speakers of that other language. It's rarer now for Western European names, but it does still happen that say, a guy named Miguel will ask his English-speaking friends to just call him Michael, the English equivalent, or Juan becomes John, etc. because English speakers without prior experience to Spanish names would have trouble with some of the sounds in those words. East Asian people do it all the time when emigrating to North America or Europe, though in that case it's less about translating the name and more about just picking a new one.
The point is, Ebonshield wants to make it easier for the existing members of her quaternion to accept her, so she translated her name, just as she mentioned that her rank of Sergeant First Class is a "translation" of sorts. You'll notice that Marcos introduces himself as Marcos, and that's not translated: the English equivalent would be Marcus. That should immediately tell you something about his character.
As for "Ebanoscudo", yes, I know that compounding words is not common in Spanish. But there are still several hundred of them: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Category:Spanish_compound_words. In this story, most pony characters have a relatively ordinary first name and a compound last name (not all though: e.g. Bound, Violetta, Mustang, etc.). I realize that's not strictly speaking how MLP:FIM does names but that's what I decided to do, and the same goes for the batponies.
I admit to taking some liberties with Spanish culture and language but, I mean, Spanish people are also not small magical talking bat-winged horses too, you know? The batponies in this story are not 100% Catalan Spanish, just inspired.

Walls are thinner than floors, generally. Anon has never complained of hearing ponies walking on the upper floor. It took knocking over furniture and a full-on shouting match to be heard downstairs.
10535337
They're Spanish, yes. I saved Slavic culture & language for another group of creatures.
And hey I was wrong maybe Ebo WILL be like a big sister for Anon, now that she is on the look out for a good stallion
10535337
Castillian Spanish (and Catalan Spanish) accents are relatively similar to Eastern European ones.
However, is is the Griffons who are the Eastern Europeans expys in this story.
No one expects the Spanish Inquisition! Next chapter is going to be muy Caliente~
10535306
I'm going with brother.
Is it just me or is Anon more of a talking plot device then an actual character. I mean he doesn't really do anything and we know the same amount about him as we did 80k words ago. We know he's a engineer...ok what kind? We don't know. From what time frame? We don't know... Ok how even old is this guy? We don't know. Where is he from? We don't know. How long has he been in Equestria? We don't know. We know more about his guards sex life then anything we know about him. I know it can't be just me who has noticed this. Is he really supported to be such a non character?
10535703
The Royal Engineer is the character around which the story revolves, but it's not strictly *about* him, per se. We will learn more about him in the future, though!
10535703
well, I thought it was kinda clear roughly what time frame he is from, likely the early 1900s or so at least from the clothes he wears and the fact he could serve as an artillery spotter. Beyond that, if he is indeed from the early 1900s then I think that may solve the fact that the only thing we know about him is that he's an engineer. I don't think many people back then would have gone around calling themselves mechanical engineers or electrical engineers. They would more likely have just gone by mechanic or engineer and such. That's my crack at it at least. wouldn't really be much of a good story if he just spat out his exposition willy nilly. Besides, from his interactions so far, we have a pretty good feel for his personality I think.
10535496
The Batnish Inquisition
10535706
I believe you, its just we are over 80k words into this and Anon character might as well be a walking talking table lamp. But you do you fam.
10535722
I would agree with you if all of it wasn't still just a shot in the dark we still just don't know. I also agree with him not doing an exposition dump about his life but he hasn't come forth with anything... at all. When it comes too his personality its just ehh he's stoic and that's about it he reacts to situations in in ways that we just don't have context for someone from the early 1900s would react in a very different way than someone from the early 2000s. I also doubt an engineer from the early 1900s would be ok being guarded by females. Then again we still just don't know.
10535739
It’s definitely a long tale. I’m still writing it 3 years after starting. The idea for the Royal Engineer is that the story mostly ignores him at first because that’s what the perspective characters — the guardsmares — are doing. Their expectations going into this 3-month assignment is that they’d have very little direct interaction with him and mostly just be standing at his door or following him around silently. That doesn’t require a lot of character establishment for him since he’s an almost nonentity to them.
Eventually that changes. Eb’s arrival is one pivot point and more are coming. As the guards interact more deeply with the Royal Engineer, they, and therefore the reader, will learn more about his identity. He is an “Anonymous” and not a “Bob” though so don’t expect him to ever be completely nailed down as “Bob Smith from 422 Rose Lane in city X of country Y, graduated from institution Z in year A, worked B years for company C, etc.”. But there are more details coming eventually.
The other thing to remember is that, as Celestia mused in the opening, since arriving in Equestria the Royal Engineer has completely dedicated himself to his work in a way that she worries is approaching a psychological disorder. That’s not normal, and despite his congeniality, his lack of socialization is part of the reason he’s an unknown to the pony characters (and therefore the reader). He’s withdrawn: he doesn’t talk much about himself and barely questions the world around him, unless it’s directly related to his work. She assigned him VIP bodyguards partially in an effort to rectify this.
10535764
Unlike a lot of people I really don't mind people using Anonymous as a name because most of the time that human name is irrelevant. But with using that name it also comes with certain characteristics the biggest one is he is modern from the "current year". I don't mind vagueness but too much of it gets really frustrated really quickly especially with someone who is supposed to be country's Royal engineer.
10535779
He is not a man as much out of our own time as you might think.
10535764
Plus Side: thanks to being pre-written, we are liable to get three years worth of words in far less time...
10535728
May we pray that Marcos be riddled with fleas and left in the sun too long...
10535779
The thing is, in this story Equestria has never had a Royal Engineer before. As Mustang relates, the role was created for him. Nobody knows what it really entails, especially not the guards. So far all he’s been doing is writing a big book and performing statistical analysis on mines.
Yes, this is a 4chan greentext and the usual conceit with those is that Anonymous is from the modern era if not actually the present day. I’m afraid that those suggesting he’s from the 19th century have missed one of the few facts established at this point, which is that he arrived in Equestria wearing cotton jogging shorts and a ratty white t-shirt. That activity and those clothes point heavily to post-WW2 modern era at the very earliest. As for his usual dress outfit, it’s simply the humanized version of what male court officials are wearing in Canterlot, plus pants, while his Gala suit order rattled off like a recitation has a story behind it which will be revealed in time.
10535820
Hey y'all write what you want to write, I have no issues with the story other then Anon being a big ol non character and it seem like the future will be full of vagueness but oh well the ride never ends.
derpicdn.net/img/2018/5/26/1741541/full.gif
I'm curious, will this story end at the gala or proceed past that?
10535849
The story as it's being written right now is currently developing in the middle of the Gala but has already set up plenty of plot points past it.
10535844
They call them: 'Mysteries yet to be revealed'.
Cone. Of. SHAME.
uh boy now the sarge is getting a talking to huh xD
Yes another chapter...gotta love the spanish accents
Aunque realmente Ébanoescudo suena bieeeen raro hahaha
10535108
If you've seen the translation of the World of Warcraft...eh world then you would know that some do translate word for word and it's terrible, most of the time, but it kinda works and in the story, more so, since the batponies are having trouble speaking english.
I’m kind of curious if they gave her the cone because somepony bet wether or not she’d wear it.
Ironrail you are a disgrace! How can you run away from such an offer?
derpicdn.net/img/2018/12/22/1914977/large.jpeg
10535973
Damn right! You get back in there and, DO HER!!!
Wondering if that's a relative or a Commanding Officer. Let wait and find out! So exciting!
Oooooooh, she's in trouble~!
10535937
Except you missed that it's done in WoW as satire, showing off how BAD they are.
10535820
The way Anon rattled off the description of his Gala suit makes me think it's something he's worn on a regular basis before. Like a military dress uniform. I'm thinking US Navy or maybe Marine Corp
