Another great chapter my dude!
Oh boy, some bat ponies are definitely going to come down to the exercise room and belittle Anon, and he's just going to smile.
I'm pretty sure that she would be interseted in letting our dear ingeneer lubricate something of hers as thanks for her services
Teehee~

Aww, you beat me to it.
Anon is a predator . Who won through chasing their prey to exhaustion.
You could possibly know the entire weather schedule for the entire year because of Pagasai.
Very fine lore. Great chapter. Love it
Is heat season around next conor or is she just a thirsty mare? Both have potencial for fun and/or desaster
I suspect Master Draxon would get on well with Anon, and his reminicences about a certain Mr Lee. And possibly even another certain Mr Lee.
Right Bruce? Certainly, Christopher.
Nice Bruce Lee reference.
Batponies trying to belittle Anon; instead they just look cute and adorable trying to be insulting and he just smiles and gives them headpats / pets them -- and oh my goodness do their attitudes change when he brings out the best weapons we have: the mighty ear scritchies, mane-strokings, nose-boops (gently!) and then... the dreaded and feared BELLY-RUBS!
I smell trouble in the horizon, I think Ebo brother might issue a challenge to Anon, and give him a reason to want to used the hammer.
If video game have teach me something is that combat shield had 3 types of styles.
-Rammer: When like football the soldier just charge and literally became a ram in a straight line or lines if skill enough, and even be combo with fist and his hammer to make like a press or an upper cut
-Push and Poke: Where they used to block, push back attacks and then 'poke' their attackers with their sword or deliver a strong blow with a hammer in this case, and can even become like a dance if apply correctly and can keep the weapon shelt and unshelt in a sort of pattern that can change directions fairly easy to dominate the battle.
-And finally the Boomerang: Where the shield is design so it can be toss and spin like a boomeran that can return to the user and had a wide range, or has like a chain or something similar like a magnet to help retrieved it, the most obvious example of that one would be Captain America
I wonder which one would he choose, or if he will choose the 3, or even if he can manage them in the first place.

Strongly depends on how close to real the combat techniques are.
Video games have generally little to zero connection to reality with how many weapons, shields included, are used.
Look up Skallagrim on YouTube for a genuine martial scholar that explains things. There are a few other channels that are giving real information. Real Crusades History often mentions the realities of how effective armor was in real battle, including records of Knights Templar being witnessed at times with a dozen arrows stuck in their armor on their back, but fighting unaffected because the arrows failed to penetrate. Different shield designs have sometimes very different uses than you might think, as even bucklers are exceptional when used the way they were meant.

Ebonshield is a Dancer. If you haven't guessed, it is probably a euphemism for assassin.
Anon is probably going to be a very smart tank with his size, brains, and heavy armor.
10590107
I though Dancer was code for Mercenary, you know because they 'dance and switch partners' all the time. In this case partners are contractors, and/or clients
10590107
Combat Expertise is a helluva feat.
One videogame habit I trust Anon isn’t even going to pick up is that of swinging his mace in some hugely exaggerated arc and letting the momentum drag him along so his shield ends up right behind him from his opponent’s perspective and thus conveniently out of the way rather than in front where it belongs...
10590138
Her main weapons are concealed dagger blades. Dancer implies a graceful and agile fighting style. She is from a culture who practically worships the shadow of night... And she is more openly more concerned with duty and honor rather than her next payday, like a mercenary would be.
Now that is an engineering mind, we only see problems or uncertainties as challenges that we get itchy to solve. No mater what perspective or attitude we have to take to get to our ultimate goal we will get, weather we need to stoke some big wigs ego or do some ground work or just sit there look pretty we will do if only to reach the goal in mind, because ultimately reaching a goal as effective and as fast as possible while causing the least if any issues is the way of the engineer.

In reality, shields can be broken into 3 types:
Kite/Tower
Round/Buckler
Heater
All 3 can apply to the first 2 concepts you listed. Kite/Tower is more "passive"
but you still have to be proactive, compared to the other two which can be used in a more offensive fashion easier. But regardless of what Games/Movies tell you, in combat you stay together as a team. And rely upon each other for defence & offence.
But well, as can be seen in this 1-v-1 demonstration flight clip from the re-enactment group I'm in....
shields be useful XD

TO be fair, only modern Mercenaries are like that.
Modern Standing Armies are technically Mercenaries as they are paid to fight rather than either reward with land or duty for owning land.
Nice
Speaking of water, damn, she still really thirsty.
At this point I really hope he gets with Ebonshield or Honor Bound. Although from the last chapter it looks more like Honor is trying to get with another colt, so I'll put my hopes on Ebonshield alone unless something goes wrong for Honor. I will say this, she at least shows a genuine interest in him as opposed to how Honor just seems to find him interesting but not really attractive in that sense.
I really like this story. Each chapter leaves me wanting more.
10590231
I'm a little farther ahead than you. You'll see eventually...
This bat has a mighty need.
Heh. I had intended to say something about how this released a scant 15-20 minutes after I finished the last chapter. Then I got distracted, forgot about the tab and now it's, like, 4 hours later.
This should be interesting. Especially since he's simultaneously both of low standing in their society's eyes and of incredibly high standing in their pseudo-god queen's. Also I feel the urge to play Morrowind again. I wonder if there are any batpony mods...
10590005
I thought those were self-lubricating. Or are you proposing... "a higher form" of fun?
10590107
It's funny. I already assumed she and her fellows were such several chapters back (I, at least, thought they were lightly beating us over the head with the implications) but managed to completely miss the implication of her being a "dancer".
And yes. Anon is going to be the most terrifying of opponents: the heavy armor wizard. Or "wizard", rather.
10590231
No 'modern standing armies' are NOT 'Mercenaries' The Hessians were mercenaries because they were working for a foreign power (a government not their own). The Redcoats who took His majesty's coin were NOT. Modern standing armies are employed by their government to protect and defend their own Citizens and Countries and are NOT 'mercenaries. The Wild Geese were mercenaries working for hire to any government that would employ them.
10590202
Not to mention 'kite shields' were for mounted troops/knights to protect their leg and body while riding. Like most equipment the form followed the function. I wouldn't think Ponies would use kite shields, but wouldn't be surprised if they used a Scutum because it would fit in with their armor style.
So in regards to Ebonshield, is she pony or is she dancer? Her time is vital, her blades are cold...ha. sorry.
Very interesting depiction of the batpony society and how it can bring problems and great boons for Anon.
Also I now ship them so hard lol
Oh she horny horny
She wants that human D.
10590464
Hear hear. Spices can be great, but they should only ever be a compliment to the dish's inherent flavor. Never a replacement.
Since there used to be many cultures like the batponies' on Earth, maybe the Royal Engineer can draw some parallels for better integration.
-chef kiss-
Another lovely chapter, boy is it refreshing to see some folks acting like responsible adults. (In contrast to other stories and the real world in general)
Also lore is fun!
Ah yes, The caste system. One of the few tidbits of knowledge I've retained from my school days... I can't wait till Anon starts training! Well I can, And I will but you know what I mean!
I hope Ebonshield find a new stallion that rut her this night and make Artemis some jealous or something
insert squinting fry meme
I’m getting distinctly clanner vibes.
I look forward to finding out the identity of the ominous ‘they’.
10590904
Aff, but not a slavish focus on everything towards the warrior caste. I doubt it's all trial this and trial that.
10590403
Mercenary are paid to fight without a grant of land nor as an obligation for the land they own.
Modern Standing Armies are paid to fight, just people have changed the definition of Mercenary from what it meant to hide this.
10590461
That is where they started to develop, but was used widely by infantry (such as the Anglo-Saxons and dismounted Norman Knights alongside their infantry professionals) as it was far far more protective than round shields and more manoeuvrable
10591314
Well going by that, the only other type of army is a slave army
10590390
......S'wit
10591316
Nah. I only got as far as Bruma before I felt compelled to turn around and come back.
10591366
Don't make me use the n'wahrd.
10591417 Indeed, sera.
10591318
Nope, throughout the classical and medieval eras there were many kinds. Much of the Roman army fought to earn citizenship, or to be rewarded with farmland. In the middle ages, nobles were expected to provide forces - both professional and conscripted - in exchange for their fiefs. While I don't wholeheartedly agree with Inucroft1 - language has moved on considerably since the age of the definition he's using - he does have a point; the nature of the modern army is vastly different than those just a few hundred years removed.
Some great wisdpme here...
Indeed!
Oh no here we go...
And here i am, thinking the unicorn is dirty minded...
Dont fear the shadow, embrace it.
I somewhere heard that befor... neat nonterless
...we should probably get permission from Her Royal Majesty's landscapers...
...and Her Royal Majesty did effectively ask me to try to help bridge the gap...
