II. Short List of Timeline Mechanics and States
Terms:
Threaded - A state in which a set of timelines are wound together to act as one single timeline; wherein a stretch of spacetime is constant across all the timelines for the duration in which they have been threaded together.
Unthreaded - A state in which any two timelines are distinct; not threaded.

Crystallized - A timeline’s hardened state. Signifies areas which Crystal Faire has visited. Crystallized portions cannot be changed under any circumstances.
Uncrystallized / hazy - A timeline’s default state; perfectly mutable. Hazy areas which exist after crystallized areas fluctuate as crystallized portions expand.
Semi-crystallized / shiny - Another hardened state which cannot be changed under any circumstances. Always precedes a crystallized line segment.
Concurrently-crystallized / solid and viscous - A state in which a timeline and its divergent set is occupied by something or somepony multiversally significant. All probabilities thread into one single timeline should Crystal Faire visit any moment within the set.
Quasi-crystallized / almost crystallized - A state which represents time-dependent events, such as time travel. Typically, isolated segments of the line which are in this state are cannot be accessed by Crystal’s travel ability.

Filter - Something which Crystal Faire uses to manipulate the way in which she sees timelines; in particular, filters automatically group timelines which meet specific criteria so that they appear as one single timeline and, should Crystal decide to visit them, automatically threads them together.

Further rules:
Timelines are infinitely diverging between one instant and the next instant. For some timeline, there are infinitely many branching off it in the next moment, and another infinitely-many branching off of each of those infinitely-many in the following moment. This makes the multiverse like a tree. One interpretation may present this as sets of timelines unthreading with each passing moment (thus leaving the total amount of timelines for all time as constant).

All timelines branch off from a singular moment: the night after King Sombra’s defeat. All events up through that moment are constant across the entire multiverse.

Alternate realities like Canterlot High, the mirror universe, and anything which may physically connect to Equestria in any sort of way is included within the set of realities which constitute one single timeline. Of these, Crystal Faire currently may only see the reality which Equestria sits in.

Crystal Faire may only use the travel ability to travel to locations that she can see. Per above, this means the travel ability may only be used to travel to locations within the reality which Equestria sits in, but it may be used to travel from any location.

So Princess Celestia and Princess Luna ended up meeting their counterparts in that?

8232175 No. That's a unique thing to my storyline, and hasn't shown up in any official materials.

8263254
Probably not. :twilightsheepish: It's just this whole 'how the mutliverse works' thing is turning my brain into a big pile of 'huh?'. :derpyderp2:

Please do. All signs pointed to something nasty going on. :ajbemused:

I think they merged together into one.

Mostly just Crystal's dialog. The Mane 6's dialog was passable, but I was reading those chapters late at night. So either there was something off or lacking about them, or I should have gone to sleep earlier then :pinkiecrazy:

8314706
Then all is right in the world :trollestia:

Just found this fanfic after looking through Equestriadaily and I gotta say this is an really interesting fanfic considering the fact there aren't much Multiverse fanfics on this site. And funny thing is the world of My Little Pony has recently been confirmed to be part of an infinite multiverse in the comics.

Wasn't expecting any kind of mention, and even then I'm surprised it was Harmony (a side project as I wrote the Change series).

But yes, I'm happy with it. :pinkiehappy:

8340859
That is what happens to people exposed to constant tragedy -- they become numb.

8340911
That's the thing, she'll not have really close friends again unless she opens up. Twilight already considers her one, but eons have made her numb.

At this rate they'll need to reboot the multiverse, tell them to contact a version of Doctor Whooves. :pinkiecrazy:

Huh, that brings an interesting question about how a TARDIS would fare in this collapsing multiverse, since the inside is its own separate pocket universe that's also alive and fully sapient.

RQK

8341999
Actually, chapter nine (specifically the scene in CHS) answers this question:

Because anypony could travel freely between Equestria and the TARDIS, much like they could between Equestria and CHS, this places the TARDIS within the set of universes/realities which constitute a single Reflections timeline. Just remember that Crystal can only see the Equestria part of the set. :raritywink:

8342103
In other words, the TARDIS would die on universal impact. :fluttercry:

They'd need a Doctor from a non-collapsed timeline if they were to hypothetically get the help of the ponified Time Lord.

Huh. I had a dream where I was doing the exact thing in this story description.

I'll have to read this later.

*sticks a pin in it*

I'm definitely gonna track this!

8385618
And here I was about to apologise because of my unconstructive criticism. I said it was underwhelming, but if I don't give reasons why then I'm more likely to just make you feel bad.
One thing that threw me off was the abrupt appearance of Silverlay. Maybe I was skipping over stuff, but one minute she wasn't there and the next she was part of the conversation.
Also, I feel it should be difficult to include her in your multiverse, given that all universes have a point of divergence at Sombra's defeat, but part of Silverlay's backstory relies on events earlier than that. This includes the pony Celestia knows (can't recall her name), and the name "Silverlay" itself which comes from Twilight's childhood.

8385618
Thanks for the praise yourself, and I do my best to forward helpful constructive criticisms. Halfway through writing this reply, I figured it would be better to transfer it to a PM so your comment section won't be too cluttered. And broadly speaking, the human race is eternally in-progress itself. I try my best to remind myself that it applies to me very much as well, so that I don't become complacent in the long run.

Apology accepted. The name you're looking for is Holly, actually. And I've already accounted for the pre-Rainboom stuff. This sort of thing was going to inevitably happen given the nature of these references, so the way I see it, I'm totally saying all that happened (meaning that Holly's existence and the origin of Silverlay's name being canon to Reflections).
However, at the end of the day, the only things which are truly canon to Reflections are the words presented in this story alone. I don't think there's been any contradictions thus far, but I know that if there ever is one, we could say it's partially canon (even 99% canon is still pretty good). Heck, all of the references thus far could be things which only look like the source material but are in actuality durastically different. It's up to the reader to decide their context~

8397392

Huh, interesting.

8397392
Oh. Interesting.

I've yet to read any of this, but I'm definitely going to track it and make sure to read it when I can, premise looks really promising!

If it makes you feel any better, Crystal's actions had quite the ripple effect in my works. I haven't gotten to the point where I'm showcasing them, mind, but they're on their way.

8513877
It kind of looks like Thorax (and Pharynx!) mutated into queens in the show during their transformation.

Which would made sense... some insects can replace missing queens like that. I'm pretty sure.

Many more timelines will appear

Many more.

(I wonder about the timelines or stories that have yet to appear like some TBC stories, Grief is the price we pay , message in a bottle, etc. And if multiverse is infinite, would there be actual human timelines like ours that technically does" exist " in this story.

Perhaps since Pink Floyd exists )

RQK

8569557
The great thing about a work such as this one is that they can exist if you choose them to. I mean, there are some hard and fast rules as to what can and can't exist but perhaps Earth exists. Perhaps Earth and the world of Equestria Girls are one in the same. Or perhaps they are separate entities! I don't know.

The only thing that I make certain claims about are the words presented in the text itself; you have agency with everything else! While these references might suggest what the deeper stories behind these brief encounters are, they are ultimately up to you to decide.

I am so hoping you would start writing again barring any issues you may have. My rule is real life before online life. Your story is by far the most fascinating and well thought out. I look forward to reading more when/if you start writing again.

Actually, I’ve finished writing the story. It’s a matter of getting the rest of it through editing at this point. It’ll be along soon, guaranteed!

8660413
I still like (and will continue to recommend) this story but that’s not going to stop me from sniggering (and passing along his poignant observation) every single time I do so. :derpytongue2:

An awesome story yet again :) Just a quick question though. The base camp with the unponies is listed as the crystal ball verse in the appendix. So are these the very same unponies doomed to die in the future? If this is the past of Sunsets home timeline, then isn't there anything she can do about the nameless problem before it happens? Also, since she is in her home timeline, yet in the distant past, wouldn't that make the basecamp be in a
Quasi-crystallized / almost crystallized- A state which represent time-dependent events, such as time travel. Typically, isolated segments of the line are in this state are cannot be accessed by Crystal’s travel ability.

Which would stop Crystal from being able to travel there.

Anyhoo, this minor question of mine detracts nothing from the story. I have added it to my favourites and will definitely read it again in the future :)

RQK

8840445
Hey! Glad you enjoyed the story!

To answer your question, not quite. Actually, this listing is slightly misleading in that while the basecamp is listed as being Feedback-verse, it is specifically from before the events of Feedback. And because there are infinitely many possibilities, the events of Feedback and Substitute are not guaranteed to happen afterward (although it will happen somewhere, it's not very probable (it's close to but not quite 0, and a little thought will allow you to decrease that already small probability even more), so they may survive!). Sunset comes from an area of the multiverse where she has already experienced the events of Feedback and Substitute (and, depending on how you interpret what she says, a third thing)-this also means that base camp is not Sunset's home timeline.

And assuming Feedback happens, Crystal could still travel to the timeline. She just couldn't travel into that 18-day timespan where Feedback occurs (as time travel is occuring during that timespan).

I’m very excited that Reflections is going to be a real book soon!

I actually think it's really cool that were so many other stories making cameos. That's pretty neat.

I feel obligated to explain the Trixies. :trollestia:

I’m very happy that you enjoyed the story! I’ll go ahead and encapsulate some responses into this comment.

Inter-dimensional (inter-time?) assassins? Oh my

Well, this is the first time I’ve seen this interpretation.

You accidentally a word.

I’m so glad you pointed that out. Tis been fixed.

I'm at a loss for words.

That’s six. Here’s five more.

Heh, get it? "Time." Heh. Heh.

Yes. A lot of work especially happened with this chapter; it used to be quite a bit longer and not as focused. And it’s had another round of edits recently as I’ve been preparing to put the print book version of this fic (and the two others before it) together. What’s here now is the best version of the story, I think.

I do reiterate that these sections that cover the technicalities are actually quite important, although its more from a completeness standpoint. We wouldn’t appreciate Inception, for example, if we did not know how dreams worked.

Welcome back, Adamantine.

Welcome back, Miasmus? :unsuresweetie:

Noticable shift in tone between these two comments. :trollestia:

Also, I'm pretty sure you were watching my progress. A couple times, I'd go, "Hm, I wonder if he's online right now." And so you were. Then I checked after every chapter. And so you were. I'm on to you :trixieshiftright:

Well, I do get excited when even one thing happens (cause it is actually somewhat rare). And you provided me with several happenings. So you basically got me going “OMG stuff is happening I wonder what will happen next.”
I can’t help myself. Sorry! :twilightblush:

9382240

Well, this is the first time I’ve seen this interpretation.

That was my first thought given the story description. I didn't have too much to go on, and it seemed like a reasonable thought. Inter-dimensional/time assassins mucking up the multiverse? Yeah, sure.

:flutterrage::rainbowlaugh::flutterrage::rainbowlaugh:

Yep!

I do reiterate that these sections that cover the technicalities are actually quite important

Yeah, I wasn't complaining about the technical bits at all. It just wasn't something I wanted to devote a lot of time thinking about. It's too much, man :fluttershyouch:

Noticable shift in tone between these two comments. :trollestia:

:rainbowlaugh:

Well, I do get excited when even one thing happens

!!!!!

10160397 Could be lots of things: evil version of alt-universe character, liar in disguise, from their universe OR another universe, demon in disguise, human from brony fandom who's a total A-hole (and originally had a Darth Vader mask on).

Basically, the point was that there was zero verification, so the protagonists were stupidly taking these outlandish claims at face value.

Case in point: would YOU believe somebody who sorta looked like an older version of someone you know who just showed up and started blathering about multiverse apocalypses? Answer: OF COURSE NOT!! You'd think they were either nuts, or you were on a prank show. And even if they showed you weird powers, you'd be suspicious because things with weird powers might not be at all what they appear or claim to be. Suspicion of strange things is how you make sure you don't end up dead, after all. It's why we all mock the horror movie tropes of the dumb teens in the woods who make stupid decisions. We KNOW it's not natural behavior or thinking processes; it NEVER feels real.

RQK

10160397
Huh. Very interesting bit that you wrote here. Things would have been drastically different had this been the case! Luckily, it was not so. Considering the setting and what Twilight's gone through, receiving Crystal Faire as she did was in-character for her. Friendship's her cornerstone, after all.

Sure, it would have been unfortunate had she been wrong, but perhaps we only need ponder that and nothing more. Thanks for writing!

That was a good story. I wonder if they cleaned up all of the debris or if there's more in the sections of the multiverse Crystal Faire can't reach.
