Bookish Delight

I've moved on from Fimfiction. New works on AO3!

E

While visiting each other at work, Rainbow Dash and Sunset Shimmer discover that they share a deep secret no one else must know.

A secret involving magical girls.

No, not that one.

The other one.

Part of the Montage Cinematic Universe.

 Hey, welcome to Friday! You made it!
Thanks so much to everyone who joined me on this experience, as well as a week-long experiment which I will NEVER ATTEMPT AGAIN

If you're just joining us, be sure to check out the rest of the Work Week series as well when you get a chance!

FUN FACT: Did you know that Wallflower Blush was in all of these stories? It's okay, I don't know what a Wallflower is, either.

Finally, if you're at Everfree Northwest on the weekend of this story's publication, feel free to flag me down!

As always, see you next crime!

Seriously, congrats Bookish! And every day, you managed to pull off an amazing piece of horsewords, and as ever, you didn't disappoint here. God, this was so lovingly adorkable.

This was wonderful and adorable. Just, a really fantastic conclusion to a great week of stories!

Well, this one got meta. On several levels, no less. Still, great exploration of the characters, the joys of sharing the experience of being part of a peripheral demographic, and the improbabilities of life. Even for those who aren't magical girls.

8933216
What is that show and where can I find it? Looks like Sailor Moon, but with horse themes! Oh wait... :rainbowlaugh:

Also, is it just me, or does that "Rainbow Buster" look suspiciously like the giant alicorn from Rainbow Rocks?

Ri2

Something about that magical girl scene seemed familiar...

So, how long until they get working Goddess Wands?

Hands up everyone who thought that the monster was real and that Rainbow and Sunset were going to have to make an implausible excuse to their bosses to go off and fight it!

Haven't read this story yet, but the video's from Smile Precure. Still haven't finished Smile, but Precure has tons of standalone seasons. My favorites are Fresh and Suite, and my favorite character is Cure Moonlight from Heartcatch.

Ha! I knew this whole "Work Week" gig was just an excuse for you to write a bunch of Pretty Cure references! And by that of course I mean I joked to myself about it exactly once when I saw "à la mode" in the Fruits of Labor chapter title. But the whole work week thing itself did give me some vague HUGtto vibes! Y'AIN'T SLICK, BOOK!

Anyway; thought I'd save my comment(s?) for the final work in the series instead of trying to come up with something different -- but just as encouraging and nice -- to say on every story because, let's be honest, being funny and interesting is Very Hard and I'm not always great at it but I feel the need to do it anyway. Nonetheless! These stories were all great reads -- some rock-solid character interactions and moments, and jam packed with both adorable friendship and plenty of sometimes not-so-subtle Bookish Style™ ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) situations alike.

You did a great job as always, and so just like always, I'm happy to wait and see what you'll give us, next, Bookish. Have fun at EFNW!

About how long it takes for twilight to do some serious crafting to their geodes.

...why did I get an Anon-a-miss vibe from the Evilogre monologue, compounded by Readmore's internal dialogue?

"Oh, yeah, no, that part's total denial. She's totally playing with toys, too. Just..." Sunset sucked in her breath. "Not with toys aimed at girls a third her age, for a show aimed at girls a third our age." She huffed.

"How long did it take you to get over the fact that this showisaimed at girls a third our age?" Rainbow asked.

Sunset rolled her eyes and snickered. "You're assuming I ever did."

Are you taking a shot at the brony fandom?

Hee hee hee

Sunny, RD, we understand you...

Is sneaking "futa" into the chapter title a cry for help, mister? :trixieshiftright:

"The people who write this show have it easy," Rainbow said, gesturing to the television. "They get to say what happens to the world and characters in it, just by making stuff up. And the characters in it don't know what's going on. For them, it's their lives. But us? We're real, and what happens in real life is way crazier than anything some TV show can dream up. Again, portal to magic pony world.

It’s a good thing Pinkie wasn’t around to tell Rainbow anything.

8933589
I do, but all that happens is that they get in an argument over which Not-Jojo was the best one.

8933425
:pinkiehappy:

(The punchline is that I'm still stuck 2/3 of the way into Go!Princess and haven't seen anything since. ;_;)

8933310
I admit to being one of those casuals who started at Smile. It and HappinessCharge are my fave seasons (with my favorite Cure being Lovely from the latter). I REALLY need to get Fresh and Suite under my belt already--the latter especially since its theme song has been stuck in my head for YEARS.

8934025
To be fair, I've only watched Heartcatch, Smile, DokiDoki, and à la Mode and I haven't gotten around to watching any of the movies so I'm... a bit behind, myself.

Superbly meta, and overall awesome! Yeah, I can totally buy both Rainbow and Sunset as magical girl anime fans.

8934107

*mentions HaCha and "songs stuck in head"*

*Innocent Harmony is now stuck in mine*

Lovely is such a cinnamon roll. A lot of Lovely fans tend to like Peach too, so that might be another reason to watch Fresh.

I myself have practically watched everything from Fresh to HaCha and still haven't seen the older ones. (I watched a bit of Go Princess and loved it, especially Cure Twinkle, but just haven't had the time to catch up. The Cardcaptor Sakura sequel is another thing I need to catch up on, too.)

I'd be willing to bet Fluttershy's already into the show.

My first glance at the title, I thought this was going to be a story about drugs. :derpytongue2:

Misreading things by single letters all over the place! I'll wait for you both to get your coffee. :trollestia:

8934921
Missing letters? Futanari means "dual form" (derived from futari, a way of saying two). It's okay. If you're curious or confused, we can have a sit down chat about this at Bronycon. On the internet, it's only a matter of time before you see something that makes you question yourself. I can even give you some pointers!

8934944
Except in this case, where it's a pop culture reference that I used on purpose.

https://wikipedia.org/wiki/Futari_wa_Pretty_Cure

Are we quite done? I'm ready to be done. I get your bit, but the joke was funny until exactly this moment. I am now just exhausted.

Thanks.

This is great!

8934780
I'll take you up on that bet.

8934944
Futari means something like "two people", as in the aforementioned "Futari wa Pretty Cure" ("We Both Are Pretty Cure").

Counting things in Japanese is often weird, one system adds a suffix to the simple counting system (for instance, 1-2-3 as ichi-ni-san becomes ichiji-niji-sanji when counting time) and the other system is used without a counting suffix, though some of them change depending on what you're counting. Hitotsu, futatsu, mittsu roughly means 'one thing', 'two things', 'three things', but when you're counting people it becomes 'hitori' (one person), 'futari' (two people), and then switches to the other system with 'san-nin' (three people).

Thus 'futanari' is not directly related to 'futari', outside of both being derived from 'futatsu', meaning 'two of something'.

8935195
Yeah, I knew it was something along those lines. It's been a good 13-14 years since I took Japanese, so I'm pretty rusty.

This story is kinda meta.

You were going for the meta angle, weren't you? Oddly enough, it works.

i liked this it was enjoyable and on this note

i wish pretty cure could get a real dub (fuck saban for screwing that up)

:rainbowlaugh:

This is at once exactly what I expected from the title, a strong cap to the series, and again, achingly personal.

Thanks a bunch for writing, as always.

N̨̖̗̰̞̻o̟w̟͜ ̟͚̫̯̱̗̭k͔͈̱̖̬i̮̤͉s̫̩s̡̩̞!͇͇͈͓͙̤̕

Would have been hysterical if when they asked how the show drew them in when they were already magical girls it turned out they were also part of a sentai group.

Sorry for the delay on this one; got kinda slammed with Various Stuff, had to take a bit of time to recover.
ANYWAY!
I've enjoyed the varying meta-themes over-arching this set of stories, especially because the connections those themes make between them aren't always obvious. But as is all too fitting for the final part, it kind of all comes together here: finding the joy in your work, the escapes we sometimes need into our Fandom Fun, the way in which Fandom at its best is about bringing people together...it's all here, and you present it very well. Not least of all, your fictional Magical Girl show sounds legit awesome, and I'm actually kind of sad we don't have, like, a full story that is just a hypothetical episode of that show, because I would read the hell out of that. I also really appreciated who it is that finds themselves sharing in the Fandom of the series, too; Dash, who we already know is a Total Fan Girl when it comes to Daring Do...and Sunset, who might not seem as obvious at first but who actually starts to make a lot of sense when you realize how...personal...the show really feels for her. It's that old Character Insight of yours in its best mode, fleshing the characters out and giving us a deeper connection to their innermost selves. And then you relate it to Real Life in the most clever of fashions; that ending bit about how Truth Is Stranger Than Fiction is not unaware of its own irony, and that's amusing and well-played, but you also keep it entirely true to the characters, and as a result it's able to speak to its true meaning very powerfully.
This was honestly a lot of fun! I'm sorry I fell off a bit at the very end, but keeping pace with these stories was actually the good kind of Burn, the kind that reminds me to keep my own creative muscles well-exercised; I really enjoyed getting to read all of them, and I really appreciated the opportunities they gave me.

No worries, i'm just glad you're feeling better! And happy you made it to the end :pinkiehappy:

The meta....THE META!!!

Kind of want them to find out Flutters is actually one of the writers for that show, then watch them go through all the responses of "fangirling".

8933216
Poor Wallflower...

Also given that I'm trash and don't watch the animu, I missed a lot of the references here to Pretty Cure, but I did notice that there were some not so subtle allusions to EQG's overarching storyline (unless the "violin girl" is a Pretty Cure reference she's straight up Sunset EG1) and the fandom in general.

So we have Prism Cyan, a sporty heroine cough Rainbow Dash cough, Prism Phoenix: an antagonist who becomes the Sixth Ranger of the crew cough Sunset Shimmer cough and finally Readmore/Prism Pink: a private school girl, who didn't have friends at her school, and is just about ready to join the team with new friends cough Sci-Twilight cough. The parallels sure are parallel, aren't they?

Anyway, have you seen Hirogaru Sky! Precure? 20th anniversary series, which includes first 18 year old Precure (Cure Butterfly); which means technically adult, and first core cast Male Precure (Cure Wing)! Also, there is an all male main cast Stage Show Precure coming soon.
