Ten years is a long time, so Sunset Shimmer thinks. Ten years since she was last a pony. Ten years since she started her life anew as a citizen of Canterlot City. Ten years since making a group of wonderful friends. Ten years of absence from Equestria.

She's perfectly fine with that absence continuing for many years to come.

Twilight Sparkle doesn't appreciate Sunset's reluctance to talk about the past. She's been studying the strange activities surrounding Shimmer since they were teenagers, and has only found further questions. But a murder with ties to Equestria gives Twilight the chance to learn the truth about magic. To stop a terrible enemy from rising again, they must both journey through the mirror. Enlightenment is at Twilight's fingertips.

Becoming the Spirit of Harmony has given Sunset Shimmer more senses than she knows what to do with, which is why she keeps most of them out of her mostly-human self. That said, it's an opt-out process; she can't leave out something she didn't know she had.

A sleeping Rarity mysteriously appears in her friends' beds, and nopony knows how or why. Her friends are determined to discover the truth behind Rarity's night-time snuggling spree.

Takes place after season 5, but before season 6.

One year after the reformation of her star pupil, Starlight Glimmer, Twilight Sparkle decides to look more into the forbidden mysteries known as Alternate Timelines. After tweaking around with Starswirl the Bearded's altered time spell, she tests it out in an open meadow.

But she honestly didn't expect it to work.

She honestly didn't expect to pull not one, but two blood-covered children from beyond the veil.

And she honestly didn't expect to find herself fighting for her life against a desperate monster.

After their first Grand Galloping Gala, Applejack and Twilight talk about the Blueblood disaster, and about Rarity’s expectations for a partner. The discussion meanders into new territory, and gets a little personal for both of them. Initially written as just a fun little one-shot.

And just what does it mean to be a princess, anyway? Sunset Shimmer has reached her own conclusions…

(Chronology note: this story takes place betwixt seasons three and four, and is the point where my Elsequestria timeline branches most distinctly into an alternate reality [though most episodes remain compatible with it]. Therefore, while it was inspired by Equestria Girls, once the stage is set this tale makes no effort to maintain any cohesion with the original movie.)
