Scootaloo is signed up for a self-defense class, and is not really happy about it. Then she finds out that her instructor is someone she met before.

(Written for the Uncommon Dazzling Ships group's July prompt:child friendly.)

I like to think that after a few weeks Rainbow has an "Ok, sport, show me what you've learned!" challenge, complete with cocky grin, and Scootaloo knocks her flat on her back.

Her hand clenched, fingers wrapping around her thumb as she pulled it back as far as she could.

Oh yeah, she has a lot to learn.

I wish you kept going with this. Seeing Scootaloo hone her skills, Aria growing to appreciate the runt in spite of herself, and Dash getting an arm dislocated in her misguided efforts to protect Scootaloo could be great fun. Still, what's there is a lovely bit of uncommon character interaction. Thank you for it.

I'd second what FoME said. This felt like it was just getting started by the time it ended, since we have this big Aria speech and no time to see how Scootaloo processed any of it.

What was here was nice, but I didn't walk away entirely satisfied.

Aria teaching self-defense. This can only end well. XD

Keep up the good work. :)

this needs more chapters

Originally, I had the idea of skipping through some of the highlights of the training, like attacking weak points or improvising weapons, then have a scene where Scootaloo is forced to use what she learned when a boy gets too aggressive with her. Unfortunately, I just couldn't get the scene right. So I decided to just leave it at this point for now.

Your synopsis reads:

Scootaloo takes a self-defense class, with a familiar

Shouldn't that be with "someone familiar" or maybe "with someone she never expected"?

I don't buy Scoots as physically inept to do something like form a fist like that. Maybe Sweetie Belle

"How am I supposed to trust you to teach me, when you used your instructions as an excuse to hit me. I am out of here."

Scootaloo walked out and slammed the door. "And I'm getting my aunts their money back, cause I'm going over your head to your boss."

Why are you figuring this is prior to the Rainbooms getting powers? Cause that's the only way she should stand a chance against them

Great stuff. There's nowhere near enough EqG Scootaloo stuff on this site, and this was superb.

Imagine Dash shoving her face into Aria's, demanding the siren reveal her obvious plan, so righteously indignant that by the time she notices Aria grabbing her arm, it's already bending the wrong way. ("Hey, what are you (sound that only dogs can hear.)")

Super speed doesn't help when you make yourself a stationary target.

And yes, Dash could punch first and ask questions later, but we've seen that violence isn't her first resort. Yelling and personal space violation are. Even with her friends!

Run to Break Free shows that at least in the build to her activating her superspeed the world moves in slow motion to her. I'm going to assume that it doesn't all the time, because that would drive her insane

Having Rainbow Dash teach her was not an option either. As much as the aunts like the older girl, they did not think that she was sufficient as a self-defense instructor.

Why not? It was good enough for Applebloom in season 1.

"I want you to punch me in the stomach," Aria repeated. She smirked and gave her abs a smack. "Right here. As hard as you can."

Scotts gonna hurt her hand

"Now, let's start with something incredibly basic." Aria held up her hand, and clenched it. "How to make a fist the right way. "

Yeah, poor kid had terrible form there.

The name "Kettle Belle" pleased me more than it should have.

for some reason this reminds me of cobra kai

If I can ever figure out where I want to go with it and how to get there, it is possible. Unfortunately, it's extremely unlikely at this time.

Well I haven't seen the series, so I can't comment on that front, but in the original Karate Kid movie, they had the motto "Strike first, strike hard, no mercy!" (which I believe was in the trailers for the show). The original instructor did not care about playing fair. He cared about winning, and making sure the opponents were injured. It's not quite the same way Aria thinks, but it does run in a similar vein.

Cool short fic.

Also, why the ever-loving fuck do people close their fists like that? I always punched with my thumb out. Just now I decided to make a fist like that just to see, I could already feel it bending the wrong way (heck, I'm still feeling it, kinda), imagine actually trying to punch like that. I understand doing it by mistake if you're surprised, but most have time to prepare, like Scoots here.

Don't get me wrong, I like the story, but how is this shipping?

Uncommon Dazzling Ships also has folders for "friendshipping." So if one of the three is in a situation where they create a friendship with someone they normally wouldn't, it gets included.

9743435 We had a prompt this month wanting to see some interaction between the sirens and any CMC-age characters, but shipping that in the romantic sense gets into uncomfortable underage territory, so we went with friendshipping. It's really just about two characters interacting, seeing how each responds to the others.

Enjoyable but a shame that it's so short. Wished there was more

Interesting concept with self defense plus it be nice to see some more nicer for them siren fics (lol not read many siren ones soooo could be wrong) but surprisingly aria teaching self-defence and how to incapacitate suits her character

Aria could be at once a vicious and effective teacher.

I’ll be honest, I’ve always questioned the characters fighting skills.

quite an interesting chapter, where Aria blaze, teaches Scootaloo self-defense, but it was good, I do want to get into marital arts eventually

"Now, let's start with something incredibly basic." Aria held up her hand, and clenched it. "How to make a fist the right way."

It’s a good thing that Scootaloo didn’t make contact. She would have only succeeded in breaking her own thumb.

I also don’t get why most adults (and even many kids starting around grade school age) make a fist in that way. I had a karate class in the grade school years (around fourth grade). I did not get any belts or learn any real karate but I did learn how to do push-ups, sit ups, some basic punches, and some basic kicks. It was pretty useless for actual self-defense. My sister was in the same karate class and it didn’t help her either. She still ended up with a black eye from a bully on her school bus not long after she took that class. And I still continued to be bullied on the playground. We both needed a self-defense class that was more like what this story describes.

Strangely enough, most people know how to instinctively make a fist the right way as very young toddlers (around age one to around the early twos or so). Some time after successfully completing toilet training most people seem to lose this (along with knowing how to take a deep breath correctly). In my karate class just over half the people there were making fists exactly like Scootaloo does in this story. I was not part of that group but I still wasn’t kicking correctly at first, so I still had a lot to learn. Initially I was not able to kick someone correctly above around shin level. In time (after maybe about a month of classes) I at least improved in this area.

My mother only kept us in that class for about a month because she didn’t think we were taking it seriously. My sister and I are both on the autism spectrum and our difficulties with eye contact and body language (as well as volume and tone of voice) were mistaken for laziness and not taking the class seriously. Therefore we were both taken out of the class early even though we both probably needed the class more than anyone else there.
