While at a weekend-long diplomatic summit, Prince Blueblood and Dragon Lord Ember do not hit it off well and both take the encounter personally. So much so, Ember goes well out of her way so to arrange her spending the rest of the weekend at Blueblood's mansion, just so she can spend it driving him up the wall.

Tempers are inflamed, property is damaged, and fires are started.

And yet, somehow, this arrangement might just work out okay after all.

This was great! Such an unlikely pair (as was the purpose of the contest) that made an awesome story! And it looks like Blueblood may be getting a little action, eh? :trollestia:

“Well, Princess Purple Smart said you were offering to host dignitaries at your mansion, so I volunteered,” Ember explained, sidestepping the unicorn to move deeper into the mansion.

I feel like Twilight did that on purpose but you know what maybe this is what he gets 😈

“If you must know, there is one thing, but it’s no gemstone.” Blueblood escorted her to where an ancient painting of a white stallion hung within a glass case. “This is a portrait of my great-great-great-great-great-great-great…”

“I get it, distant relative,” Ember interrupted to summarize.

Seriously do they have to do that every time and I thought Chief Thunderhooves was bad when he almost named his ancestors 😅

This was a fun romp by a very unlikely pair.................& I loved every minute of it!!!! :rainbowlaugh:

Seriously though it was fun seeing Ember & Blueblood butt heads during the weekend, heck you made me like him a bit in this story (and that's saying much considering his character:ajbemused:) Thanks for fuuny yet cute story Scyphi!

Five minutes later, once they’d finished extinguishing the stove and she’d stopped cackling with laughter, Ember commented that it did take talent to somehow set water on fire. Unamused, Blueblood concluded they would have to try something else.

And I thought of Sweetie Belle was bad when she cook breakfast and basically burned literally everything even juice I still don't know how that works but whatever lol

“Everyone except one!” Blueblood responded, biting his lip and worried what Ember was doing, “But I’m not sure…” He was interrupted when Ember burst out of an upper-story window and landed before them, carrying something. “No, that’s everyone now!” he corrected before confronting the panting dragoness. “Now, what the devil were you doing, racing back into—” He was immediately silenced when Ember held up a familiar portrait. Shocked, Blueblood accepted it into his hooves. “The portrait of my great-great-great…” he shook his head, “…my distant relative. You’ve saved it.”

Aww ember you're an amazing dragon 😄 And it's really nice of you

Wow this is a very unlikely pairing but I really like that having to royalty but quite the opposite from each other having Ember & Blueblood very interesting encounter but then suddenly Ember decided to live with blue blood for one of those stays and it's a very interesting day for both of them mostly Prince Blueblood they started to have pretty good conversation throughout the days even ember helping him find a date which that's pretty nice of her but then things got crazy when the other Dragon attacked ember and destroying his mansion but Prince Blueblood save ember from the Dragon after the battle they got out of the mansion and it was on fire but then Amber decided to save Prince Blue Bloods painting which again that was nice of her even he was pretty emotional gave her a hug with that so cute this was a pretty unexpected pairing but I love it so keep up the good work

Sequel. I demand a sequel.

Moving in together as roommates while his house is rebuilt maybe?

Imagine all the antics they can get up to in cantalot alone?
For real though, this was really good. The pairing is something I've never seen, and really works. Honestly, I could see this friendship going places. Just imagine rarities reaction?

Fantastic read. Very well done. ^^

I clicked on this story out of boredom and curiosity. I don't regret my decision.

It was fun to see not only how Ember and Blueblood clashed with each other, but also how they blended and got along together.

Nice to see Bluebutt have some depth without losing his foppishness. Not many writers have been able to pull that off.

I should be meeting with my advisers right now to work on my paper. Instead, I'm reading a story about magical horses and fire-breathing dragons.

I don't think I regret my decision. Or lack thereof. ADHD is weird like that.

I saw this in the box and instantly thought:
"This has to be an 'unusual pairings' contest."
Still, nice tho.

Personally, I thought it was the toast that was the most impressive. :rainbowlaugh:

10835147
Well, I don't like making promises for sequels these days, because I end up almost never pursuing them. But as I alluded in the author's note, there is some cut material that I'll probably go back and add back in after the contest is over, the judging is complete, and there's no longer a need for me to keep the word count under 10K. So there's that to look forward to.

In the meantime, I admit I hadn't originally planed to end the story quite where it did, and would've instead continued on to cover the aftermath a bit more. One bit had Aquila offering Blueblood and Ember to bunk at her suite for at least that first night, which she then turns into a sort of slumber party in the vein of "Look Before You Sleep," so that answers that question at least.

10835280
I appreciate the offer, but I typically make my own cover art. :pinkiehappy: The reason I hadn't done that here (yet) is simply because the deadline for the contest is literally just a smattering of days away and, with that in mind, I didn't want to delay posting the story just because its waiting on me getting the cover art put together. The story's ready now, so since it already took longer than hoped to write it, better get it out there now while I still had the chance.

Never fear though, I hope to have that cover art put together and up in around a week, two tops, depending on what my work schedule is like during that time.

10834875 10835287
Yeah, I quickly realized even before writing that the story wouldn't work if I just leaned all the way in on Blueblood being an uppity-jerk like so many do (which is kind of funny, because that was actually how I first got the idea), so I opted to off-set that some by making him also an experienced diplomat too, to show he actually is still competent at his job, as well as give him a reason for trying to be diplomatic enough to allow himself to be egged into doing some of the things Ember gets him to do in the first place.

I actually took some inspiration from the Friends Forever #26 comic for that, so I guess a shout out to that for the inspiration.

10835625
Lol nice meme of the burn toast 🤣 and pretty awesome you got some inspiration from the friends forever comic he was actually much decent in the comic he's still annoying and I still don't like him but at least he was tolerable there

Before I read, I must know: Did she end up eating him? :pinkiecrazy:

Why am I wanting a chapter 2 or more of this it seems unusual but rather hilarious plus imagine she spent a few days at his house ember inviting him over to the dragon lands

It's always a treat to see a Blueblood that is still an ignorant fop, but not a literal monster. I was surprised when it turned out he was completely sincere in trying to woo Calamansi. A good kind of surprised. As for the ship... haven't yet seen it often!

This was impressively good. Like it felt episode worthy quality at times. Especially considering the characters you were working with. Great work!!

No, but she does eat a sandwich with questionable contents inside, so you can use your usual Alondro Imagination (TM) to determine what those contents actually were. :ajsmug:

“Well, I was going to say a rat or something, but…”

I really enjoyed that. This is the second story I've read where Blueblood finds a romantic interest. And, you should definitely restore the removed content, especially if it continues the story. My first thought as I neared the end is that this was too short, and wrapping up too fast.

10838417 Soylent Pone is... griffons? :applejackconfused:

Absolutely incredible! This story has everything that I like to see: humor, action, good characters, and some romance to boot. Blueblood's portrayal is magnificent. Capn_Chryssalid's The Best Night Ever is the only story I can compare it to, which is saying a lot. That story is my absolute favorite of all time on FiMFiction, bar none.

I love that everything in this story comes together in the end - no details are just thrown out there for the sake of being thrown out. I don't want to give spoilers, so... The fact that Ember's rival actually shows up at the end was totally unexpected. I had almost forgotten about that detail, but you actually used it instead of just leaving it. And having Ember rush back into the burning building to save Blueblood's portrait was so wholesome, and left me grinning from ear to ear. There was plenty of great humor throughout, but one joke in particular, when Blueblood said “Yes, let’s not risk potentially assassinating the princess” left me laughing so hard. I had taken a drink only a few paragraph's earlier, but had I taken it right then, it would've resulted in a real-life spit-take.

If you do decide to add in the deleted scenes (or write a sequel) I look forward to reading more. This story left me wanting to see what else can happen with this dynamic duo.

Congratulations on your first place contest win! You undoubtedly deserve it.

“Well, they were constantly asking if there was anything they could do for me!” Ember groused as she continued eating. “But I’m a very independent dragon, so when they said that you’d said to treat me with the same authority as yourself…” Blueblood groaned and buried his face in his hooves. “…I told them to not worry about it and to take the weekend off. And they did!” Her gaze turned distant. “Surprisingly quickly, too.”

Okay this has to be the best joke I've read all night!

Blueblood hesitated, glancing in the direction Aquila had left. “But we are not even the same species!”

“The back half of her is though. And isn’t that the half that matters most in the end?” Ember gave him a sly nudge.

I stand corrected....

Congrats on getting first place btw! Nice story, you made Ember really fun to read about.

“Well, good!” Ember argued back, shooting him a glare. “Because I’ll tell you now—I never forget a name!
“Yeah, you keep telling yourself that, Ember,” Raven Inkwell sassed as she passed them.
“Nobody asked you, Starshine Rarity!”

I'm already seeing how this won the contest.

Five minutes later, once they’d finished extinguishing the stove and she’d stopped cackling with laughter, Ember commented that it did take talent to somehow set water on fire.

Sweetie Belle would be proud.

Oh, this was fantastic indeed. Great characterization with both of the stars, and brilliant interplay between them. Thank you or it, and congratulations on your win!

This was a fantastic story and very well written! I really enjoyed it!

“…well, I am a prince,” Blueblood couldn’t help but proudly remind. He joined her in examining the objects decorating most of the mansion. “And so you tend to collect a lot of valuables after—”

Well Spike is technically a prince. And I'm pretty sure the only valuables he has (that aren't his friends) are his comic books.

Hey, one man's trash is another man's treasure. :raritywink:

In any case, things started looking up when they began discussing a sizeable shipment of lapis lazuli. Equestria, having a surplus, was offering to trade it with anyone interested. Ember showed interest as the mineral was rare in the Dragon Lands and would be a welcomed addition to their food supplies. But Baroness Calamansi wanted it for Mustangia so to use its magical properties in the enchanting of artifacts, since they lacked a population of unicorns to do this via traditional spellcasting.

what you did there
i see it

That was brilliant. Congratulations on a well-deserved win.

“Well, good!” Ember argued back, shooting him a glare. “Because I’ll tell you now— I never forget a name! ”

“Yeah, you keep telling yourself that, Ember,” Raven Inkwell sassed as she passed them.

“Nobody asked you, Starshine Rarity!” Ember shouted back before jabbing a claw at Blueblood. “Point is, this isn’t over .” She then stomped off, vanishing into the crowd.

Spike: And that's some more of that sassy Raven Inkwell we all know and love:heart:
Love the name she gave Raven too hahahaxD

Too late. There was a sudden blast that shook the whole mansion, powerful enough to hurl Blueblood, singed and blackened with soot, skidding back out of the exploded bathroom and coming to a stop at Ember’s feet.

Ember might have just chuckled, but I laughed out lot reading this part xD

“The back half of her is though. And isn’t that the half that matters most in the end?” Ember gave him a sly nudge.

Oh Ember hehehe:3

A sub-title for this fanfic could be "How she burned my house down, but got me a girlfriend." xD

10914188
To be fair...the burning the house down part wasn't really Ember's fault. :rainbowlaugh:

10914250
I loved this fanfic:heart:
GOOD JOB

One of the best fics I've read on this site.

Well this was a friggin' delight. :rainbowlaugh: Wholesome and hilarious. And quite a good take on Blueblood - not being a mockable idiot or experiencing a fairy-tale redemption, but a very 'human' character who evolves in an intelligent way. Snarky, cynical, and intelligent, but also so cloistered and self-focused that it takes a friend like Ember to break him out of his shell.

Simple, entertaining and oddly adorable yet quite action packed. Honestly this was a great read, kind of sad it took me this long to read it.

Anyway, I really like how you wrote Blueblood, fics that developed him more are definitely more interesting than the ones that just have it as just an annoyance.
