I like him as a chick. You know what would be a good idea? Making it so roxy becomes a real person living among them and max stays as himself.
This shit went from 0-100 real quick
So she is a tyrant I really believe that she should let them do their mistakes then punish them rather than just make everyone forget
I'm really not sure I want to keep reading after this chapter. The fact Max didn't stay pissed at Celestia after she admitted to tampering with his mind when he had previously told her that if he found out she had he'd be done with her makes me feel like I'm watching one of those bad love story anime where the main character is practically killed over and over again but because he loves her even while acknowledging that she's bad for him will kill him It's okay.
Spoilers: it likely will kill him and I'll laugh when it does because I'm pragmatist and I really enjoy watching people catch their darwin awards
You... probably know how much I now distrust the Princesses. We have Powerthirst Moon, and (presumably, in one case,) the Mindrapers! We have Homocidal Jack, Rapist Belle, Smothershy, Aggro Dash, Pedo's Dream Pie, and... I got nothing... Seriously, "Twilight Sparkle"? I can't even work with that!
8061581 Life sucks sometimes
Ah Celestia the Sugar Coated Tyrant with a God Complex
Ok, it was already implemented that Celestia is a control freak and all, but THAT last bit of the chapter just made everything 100 times darker. Like... the fu***** hell, the story took now the "100% Benevolent Tyrant-Celestia route".
She erases memories left and right and is so insane with "controlling everyponys' life" and the one from Max, too, that she just takes them the right of freedom and basically forces them to live like she wants it. Everything so that the entire population lives her "way of harmony".
And if something happens beyond her holy will... she goes just full Men in Black on them to prevent them from ever making huge mistakes in their life, because that would not sit well with HER world. Like a freaking puppet master and every citizen is her puppet.
To be honest? I have now similar thoughts like Camlio and I'm not sure if I will continue to read. I could accept that Celestia was a manipulative ruler and all, because she kept approved murder and other things a secret so that her "Little Ponies" wouldn't learn about the "dark side of the world". But now... necromancy and Applejack as a murder, raped by Rarity and the confession that she changed memories to her every whim since a long, long time and nopony and nobody would never know, or knew, about it, except maybe her little sister.
And the huge amount of implications? How many times did she changed the "true" outcome of this world? How many times did she erased memories to prevent the Element Bearers from committing crimes and saving their name with erasing all evidence about such events and so on? Implications, implications everywhere. Dark ones.
Hmm... I have to think about it...
8063549 I understand if you choose not to continue with the story, but keep in mind that there's more. The story isn't over yet.
8063597 Yeah, I know. I was just not prepared that your story got out of nowhere in a few sentences just a huge load darker. Or that for this matter the ponies (especially the Element Bearers) who knows how many times committed crimes and Celestia prevented that with erasing all evidence and memories to boot. ^^
I will see what you plan next.
8063605 I thought it was already pretty dark, in my defense, but I do see the disparity.
8063638 It certainly was already, yes. Don't worry. But until now it wasn't completely established that Celestia is a 100% tyrant of "peace". That she would go this far, just to prevent her Ponies from, well, making mistakes in life and having to learn from them or more, facing actual consequences for their actions. To put it very leniently. That was a new level. ^^
8063680 I don't really see it as such. It's a pretty heavy crime, but I thought that the war crimes and dark operations that I implied were plenty to get that side of the story shown. Not that I'm defending Celestia's actions in any sense, but she does keep her meddling (as far as a personal level) to the Elements and Max. The Elements because they're public figures that represent the ideal Pony, and Max because his life is generally interesting enough to be toned down.
I'm curious, how do you see Celestia? Besides as a utopian co-dictator?
That said, I'm glad I finally got the point across, and thank you for the feedback.
8063721 Depends. The official MLP Celestia is obviously a benevolent ruler. But in reality... I don't think she is a real dictator, but knows that life has light and dark sides. She wants to teach her Ponies about Generosity, Kindness, Honesty, Loyalty, Laughter, well, Harmony, Friendship and Love in general (Cadence and Twilight received with her blessing the representive titles as princesses), but there are enough who don't give a damn about that.
But hey, you can't keep a country running for 1000 years without being able to defend it and its inhabitants (plus the morals and virtues), so she surely has her fair share of "dark secrets".
She has to keep track of "threats" for her "kingdom of harmony" and surely had to end the one or another "unredeemable" being in her long time as a ruler to preserve it (nobles who woudn't care at all if "commoner" would have to pay in any form or shape for their plans for example. Even when you tell them 1000 times that letting others suffer potential harm or maybe even death for your own egoistic goals, they would reply: "I don't care." So... what else could she do with such beings? Except caging or banishing them somewhere or killing them even if the first two options are not available, there is not much else she could do.) I think she may handle dangers of a mortal level (so threats the Element Bearers wouldn't be able to face, because they don't care for keeping prisoners or something else and would straight up kill them) in the shadows, yes. Handled them on a more permanent level, but otherwise wouldn't be a tyrant in the sense of the word. The threats she had to dispose of were I think surely ones which had in mind to achieve an own advantage and letting the Ponies suffer the consequences without remorse.
But I don't think that she had on an international level strings everywhere or that she would even take the free will or do some other very dark things. I think she just really wants to keep her kingdom safe like every ruler and is careful that nobody or nopony endangers her subjects on a higher level.
For example Sunset Shimmer was never allowed further in her studies as long as she didn't "let friendship into her heart", because Celestia didn't want to allow that somepony filled with arrogance, pride and lack of social behaviour, heart and compassion, becomes a ruler. Furthermore, she always had her own head in her later studies and didn't care any longer for Celestia's "advices", that was a problem for her. She only tolerates another Pony as a ruler who has compassion in the heart and "learned" that "positive behaviour" would be much more efficient. Otherwise, in such a case everything she worked for (a peaceful kingdom for every single one of her little Ponies) would be in potential danger. She really wants to believe that only her way is the right one, so she has a very high put moral code. Not out of insanity or tyranny, but to show her subjects that following the "way of harmony" is always better in the end than a more egoistic behaviour.
For example Twilight. Celestia needed someone as the Element Bearer of Magic to lead the elements and their representive bearer to save her sister, because they didn't work her anymore and the Elements needed more than one bearer. So she needed for all six elements six bearer, that wouldn have been possible with Sunset (who was surely the Plan A I think) because the girl was already so "far gone" in a sense of the word that she had no choice than to dismiss Sunset Shimmer as her student. Twilight was maybe antisocial, too, but the girl was always willing to listen to Celestia's advices, no matter what, in opposite of the headstrong Sunset. So there was still a chance the lavender Unicorn would be able to learn to rely on others and bind with them unlike her former student, who refused to accept such sentiments and saw them more as "obstacles".
Afterwards she sent Twilight on the path to learn the "Magic of Friendship" solely with the endgoal to prepare Twilight for the planned ascension to an Alicorn as to further proof to all that "friendship" can and will always be the right way to handle things.
In the long-term she surely let her drive to show that there is always a "better way" and because she is so focused on her own morals that she didn't see another way anymore as right, blind her partly that life is not always fair. But Celestia wanted to keep such reality as far away as possible from her beloved subjects. Not out of being a monster or tyrant, but because she really want to give the Ponies a "save haven" where not much can harm them.
Her dream is it surely to create an utopia, but not at all costs. I think that's the reason she always believes in second changes for beings like Discord (and because he can't just be caged forever or otherwise be stopped easily as the literal God of Chaos ). I mean she didn't kill Tirek, but banished him, or Sombra who was banished, too.
Her sister was obviously banished, because she was her sister and always hoped that one day she could be reunited with Luna somehow. So "using" Twilight and her friends to save her only remaining living family? Well, not the worst sin in my book, could be much worse.
Celestia knows that dangers exist that have to be handled, but not in a way that would endanger her utopia and would give her Ponies ideas like "it's ok to harm" or other more violent tendencies. Not out of manipulation, but because she wants to give them peaceful life as much as possible. She sees herself maybe as a mother of all ponies in some kind and so she desires nothing more than an environment and country where her "children" can live a sheltered and safe life without having to deal with the "dark" sides of life as much as it could be possible without her interventions.
In the very end, yes, it can be called tyranny in a darker interpreted way, because she doesn't allow diversity beyond the norms of her own form of "harmony", but that is just her wish to keep harm and darkness and "negative emotions" at a low level, as much as possible.
She doesn't do all that out of spite, but love for her subjects and is ready to make sacrifices and does what has to be done, if necessary and unavoidable. A love, a mother would have for her own children. That's my opinion about Princess Celestia. ^^
8063869 Dude. Dude. You get it. Two years of writing this shit, hoping for some feedback that would let me know if I was getting my point across, and you, sir or madam, have done it. Congratulations, I don't have a prize, but you can have a ->
8063905 I edited a little my opinion in grammar and a few sentences about Luna and other things. Don't know if you read it. But that's now my final opinion. ^^ Thanks, I always wanted to have a Pinkie Meme!
In the future if someone asks me how I think about Celestia in reality, I can copy and paste it now. Spares me a lot of typing.
I have read all the chapters now and it took Me 3 days. Im loving this now!
Oi you cheeky little cunt, think I wouldn't catch that?
8060289
Negative, I repeat do not make that a real dealio
As for comments on this chapter, I'm fuckin livid. Or as livid as I can be in the shoes of a character I like.
Seriously tho, mind rape? Power struggles with luna? Actual rape? Holy fucking Christ on a pancake no. I'd have told Celestia to gimme them memories back immediately, whether or not they're painful.
Woooo man pissed doesn't even cover it. Besides that, excellent fuckin chapter. Bravo

everyone who fucked with me would die after i got those memories back. kill Applejack and Rarity after killing Celestia once she did give the memories. then go to canterlot and kill Luna to get her powers and leave the country to burn.
Damn this story went to Diaries of a Madman level dark pretty fast.
8983861
I know, right? I’m actually starting to confuse the main characters some of the time.
8985684
... dam.
8983861
I've gotten more than one Diaries of a Madman vibe from this story. Something something weed. At least Max didn't take the pot brownies to the Grand Galloping Gala
Wow, I mean, the Diaries of a Madman vibes were strong before, but WOW. Nav and Max have so much in common its spooky. Also, I mean I know Celestia has her Freudian excuses stacked up like a deck of cards, but how much is gonna happen before she goes from person to monster? Like, Max is basically in an abusive relationship. Hopefully she ain't snorting crack like Celly in DoaMM...but we're just about there ain't we?
Man oh man, this was an insane chapter! Nonstop constant wave of insane Revelations by the end of it!
*simulataneously screaming and dying inside*

If you're lying, you're cryuing. OR dying. Or all three
I see that people are comparing this to DOAM. Honestly, I can see why, but it's not a right analogy at all.
Here, Celestia actually seems to like the main character, that's why she does some of the fucked up shit she does. Sure, it's not a healthy relationship, but what would you expect of someone as old as her? Obviously, as a ruler she has done some stuff such as protecting the main 6 from legal issues.
But Max? She actually loves him. Potentially. (she might just not want more trouble for the main six such as AJ killing him, BUT she could have erased the memories of the entire town of him instead of going for opting for magic, but I could be wrong)
Is Max different from Nav? There are certainly parallels, but he is more friendly and considerate in that regard than Nav. Also, Max totally should have asked Celestia to not remove his memories no matter what.

I left this tab open and left, then came back and the middle of your comment(Sunset part) was on my screen, but because of the quality of writing, I thought it was the story I was reading because I forgot where I left off. So I was very confused at the sudden use of pony faces. lol

I always wondered just how exactly A Thief's Tale was like DOAMM because I'd heard people say they were similar, but not really explain it. There are similar concepts in both stories, but it's the relationships between the characters that I like to hold onto as my main difference. Max reacts a lot different than Nav does, which is because they're two different people.
Celestia does love Max, but it's a different kind of love
I really appreciate the reference in the chapter title. Nice job fitting that in.
Boy, this is gonna end badly. Really badly.
PD: loving the edgy badass Max you went with.
Damn this chapter was insane
