Chapter 63: Pokemon League First Round (Part 4)

The next day finally came, as Guzma and Mina's battle was under way on a grassy battlefield, with both trainers down to only two Pokemon each. Guzma was going at Mina with his Ariados, while Mina had Granbull out, "Alright, Granbull, use Fire Fang!" Mina instructed.

"Quick Ariados, use Sludge Bomb!" Guzma instructed. Ariados then fired off Sludge Bomb, which was able to take down Granbull.

"Granbull is unable to battle, the winner is Ariados!" the referee declared, as Mina recalled Granbull.

"Thanks Granbull, you were awesome out there," Mina said, as she got her next Pokeball ready, "Alright, time to show the Pokemon I got from a Wonder Trade. Now, Togekiss, let's go!" Mina said, sending out a white colored Pokemon, with red and blue markings on it, with that looked to have two large wings.

"Whoa, what's that?" Lola asked.

"Togekiss, the Jubilee Pokemon, a Fairy and Flying Type. These Pokemon never appear where there is strife and turmoil. Since ancient times, it has been depicted on many good luck charms as the bringer of blessings," Fluttershy's Rotom Phone explained.

"Alright Togekiss, let's show them an Air Slash attack!" Mina instructed. Togekiss then used Air Slash, which was able to finish off Ariados.

"Ariados is unable to battle, then winner is Togekiss!" the referee declared, as Guzma recalled Ariados.

"Alright, if you're coming at me with a Flying Type, then I'll use this one! Now go, Armaldo!" Guzma said, sending out a Pokemon that sort of looked like a bipedal shrimp, with six wings on it's neck, and sharp looking claws.

"Armaldo, the Plate Pokemon, a Rock and Bug Type. This Pokemon's tough armor makes all attacks bounce right off. One or many species of Pokemon that are revived from fossils, this Pokemon's claws are it's greatest weapon," Toby's Rotom Phone explained.

"A Pokemon brought back to life from a fossil? Who'd a thunk it?" Liam questioned.

"Alright Armaldo, use Ancient Power!" Guzma instructed. Armaldo then summoned fossils from nowhere, and hurled them at Togekiss, who tried to dodge, but got hit by one of the rocks.

"Hang in there Togekiss, let them have an Aura Sphere!" Mina instructed. Togekiss then gathered up some aura energy into a sphere, before throwing it at Armaldo.

"Block it!" Guzma ordered. Armaldo stood it's ground, and tried to block the attack, but it was too strong, as Armaldo was sent skidding back a few feet, "Alright, then how about Rock Blast? Go for it Armaldo!" Guzma ordered. Armaldo then started firing rocks at Togekiss, hitting the Jubilee Pokemon just enough to knock it out.

"Togekiss is unable to battle, the winner is Armaldo, therefore, moving on will be Guzma!" the referee declared.

"Alright! Nice one Armaldo!" Guzma praised his Pokemon, recalling it, and exiting the arena, as did Mina.

"The former boss of Team Skull is showing exactly why he was the boss! Anyhow, for our next match, we have Toby Mason from Mahogany Town, going up against Reji from Veilstone City, in the Sinnoh region!" the announcer declared.

"Well, I guess I should get down there," Toby commented, standing up.

"Good luck, sweetie pie," Silver Spoon said, giving Toby a kiss, before he left.

"So, were you guys able to find anything out about this Reji guy?" Lori asked.

"We asked all the captains, and they all gave us the same answer: 'he's a creep'," Silver Spoon replied, as they saw Toby enter the arena, with a lanky looking boy, who looked be limp from the waist up. He wore a grey, long sleeved shirt, and his red hair was covering his eyes. He also chuckled sinisterly.

"Ugh, they were right.... he IS a creep!" Leni commented, shivering at the sight of Toby's opponent, as a sandy beach battlefield rose up.

"Alright, the next match shall now begin. Both trainers will use only three Pokemon! The battle will be called when all of either side's Pokemon can no longer battle! Substitutions may be made freely at any time!" the referee declared.

"Alright, now, Raichu, let's go!" Toby said, sending out his Raichu. Reji tossed a Pokeball, releasing a large, red, centipede like Pokemon.

"Scolipede, the Megapede Pokemon, a Bug and Poison Type. This Pokemon latches onto its prey with the claws on it's neck. before slamming them into the ground, and jabbing them with toxic spikes. Scolipede is a very aggressive Pokemon," Serenity's Rotom Phone explained.

"Since it's a Poison Type, wouldn't that give Raichu the edge, being a Psychic Type?" Lucy asked.

"That may be true, but Scolipede is also a Bug Type Pokemon, which is strong against Psychic Types. It can also use various Ground Type moves too," Will replied.

"Alright, battle, begin!" the referee declared.

"Raichu, return!" Toby said, recalling Raichu, and getting out another Pokeball, "Go, Charizard!" Toby said, sending out his Charizard, who roared loudly.

"Wow, we haven't seen Charizard in a while!" Lynn Jr. commented.

"Charizard, the Flame Pokemon, a Fire and Flying Type. With flames hot enough to melt boulders, this Pokemon is always seeking opponents that are stronger than it. However, it will never turn it's flame against a weaker opponent," Serenity's Phone explained.

"Smart move. Charizard is a Flying Type, so any possible Ground Type moves are ineffective against it," Will commented.

"And the fact that Charizard is a Fire Type helps matters," Lisa commented.

"Alright Charizard, let's start things off with Fire Spin!" Toby instructed. Charizard then spewed a stream of fire at Scolipede, which then turned into a tornado of fire, trapping the Megapede Pokemon, "Now, let's give it a Heat Wave!" Charizard then fired off superheated air at Scolipede, damaging it further.

"..... Use..... Rollout..... he-he-he," Reji cackled. Scolipede then burst out of the tornado, rolling at a high velocity at Charizard.

"Quick, dodge it Charizard!" Toby instructed. Charizard then took to the air, evading Rollout.

"....Don't..... think so," Reji said, cackling more, as Scolipede bounced off a rock, propelling it into Charizard. When Scolipede landed, the tornado reappeared, damaging it a little more.

"I think one of Scolipede's Abilities is called 'Poison Point', which can Poison an opponent upon contact. Sticking with long range attacks will be wiser that fighting head on. Now Charizard, use Heat Wave!" Toby instructed. Charizard then fired off Heat Wave, once more, striking Scolipede, knocking it out.

"Scolipede is unable to battle! The winner is Charizard!" the referee declared, as Reji recalled Scolipede. He then got out his next Pokeball, and tossed it, releasing a Tentacruel.

"Tentacruel, huh? Charizard, return!" Toby said, recalling Charizard, getting out his next Pokeball, "Go, Raichu!" Toby said, sending out Raichu, "Alright Raichu, let's start things off with Thunderbolt!" Toby instructed. Raichu then fired off Thunderbolt, striking Tentacruel, who remained still standing.

"......Toxic Spikes......." Reji said, cackling once more.

"Ok, that's starting to get really old and really creepy," Luan commented, as Tentacruel fired off Toxic Spikes, scattering them across the battlefield.

"What's Toxic Spikes?" Ross asked.

"It a move that poisons any new Pokemon that's switched out. It doesn't affect Poison or Steel Type Pokemon, or those that can float or fly," Will replied.

"Now..... Hydro Pump!" Reji said. Tentacruel then fired Hydro Pump, which was able to strike Raichu.

"Hang strong Raichu! Use Psychic!" Toby instructed. Raichu then fired off Psychic, which was able to knock out Tentacruel.

"Tentacruel is unable to battle! The winner is Raichu!" the referee declared, as Reji recalled Tentacruel.

"Something seems.... odd," Lincoln commented.

"What do you mean?" Girl Jordan asked.

"See, this entire battle, that Reji guy has hardly been battling. It's like he's just letting his Pokemon fall one right after the other," Lincoln replied.

"Now that you mention it, Reji only called one actual damaging move from both Scolipede and Tentacruel. The only difference is that he had Tentacruel use Toxic Spikes," Lisa replied.

"What exactly are you getting at?" Lucy asked.

"I think that Reji guy may have been setting Toby up from the beginning," Lincoln replied, as Reji send out a Gyarados. Raichu glowed blue once Gyarados materialized.

"Gyarados is a Water and Flying Type, right? Wouldn't Raichu have the advantage?" Leni asked.

"You're right. Reji must have something up his sleeve," Will replied.

"Alright..... before anything else...... Mega Evolve, Gyarados!" Reji said, pulling out a Key Stone, which reacted with his Gyarados' Gyaradosite, transforming his Pokemon into Mega Gyarados.

"That's Mega Gyarados?!" Lincoln exclaimed.

"Yes. When Mega Evolved, Gyarados becomes a Water and Dark Type, with the ability Mold Breaker, which nullifies any and all of the opposing Pokemon's abilities that can hinder attacks, such as Static or Flame Body," Will replied.

"Gyarados..... use Dragon Dance....... then Crunch!" Reji instructed. Gyarados then started to wiggle around, with a purplish red aura around it. It then jetted at Raichu, unleashing a devastating Crunch attack, which was able to knock out Raichu.

"Raichu is unable to battle, the winner is Gyarados!" the referee declared, as Toby recalled Raichu.

"Tough break for Toby. Dark Type moves are good against Psychic Pokemon, right?" Ronnie Anne asked.

"Right. Plus, there's also the matter of Dragon Dance. It raises a Pokemon's Attack and Speed stats," Will replied.

"Alright. I should change up my strategy. And where there's a will, there's Mawile.... GO!" Toby said, releasing Mawile.

"Mawile, the Deceiver Pokemon, a Steel and Fairy Type. It lures prey in with it's cute, frontward appearance, before clamping down with it's massive jaw like horns. Because these jaws have no taste, Mawile uses them to eat food it doesn't like," Fluttershy's Rotom Phone explained.

"Mawile has the advantage in terms of offense, right?" Clyde asked.

"Right. Dark Type Pokemon are weak to Fairy Type moves," Will replied.

"Alright Mawile, use Moonblast!" Toby instructed. Mawile then began to gather energy.

"Not so fast.... Gyarados...... use Earthquake!" Reji ordered. Gyarados then slammed the ground, causing a massive tremor that stopped Mawile from charging up for Moonblast, "Now, use Aqua Tail!" Gyarados then struck Mawile with it's tail, coated in water. Mawile struggled to stay standing.

"Hang on Mawile! Use Play Rough!" Toby instructed. Mawile then lunged at Gyarados, smacking it around, which was able to cause quite a lot of damage to the Atrocious Pokemon.

"Not bad, but not good enough! Gyarados, use Flamethrower!" Reji instructed.

"Wait, what?!" Lynn exclaimed, as Gyarados then blasted Mawile with Flamethrower, knocking it out.

"Mawile is unable to battle, the winner is Gyarados!" the referee declared.

"That was a surprise. I never would've thought a Water Pokemon could use a Fire Type move," Lisa commented, as Toby recalled Mawile, and sent out Charizard.

"Now it's all up to Charizard. Not a good match against Gyarados," Will commented.

"Well, if you're using Mega Evolution, then i should level the playing field," Toby said, as he pulled out a necklace that had his Key Stone embedded in it. He then tapped the Key Stone, "Alright Charizard, Mega Evolve!" Toby exclaimed, as Charizard began to Mega Evolve into Mega Charizard X.

"Whoa, that black and blue coloring looks so cool on Charizard!" Clyde commented.

"And now Charizard is a Fire and Dragon Type, so Water Type moves will only be half as effective on Charizard," Will commented.

"What do you mean?" Ross asked.

"See, Water type moves are strong against Fire Types, but not so much against Dragon types. And since Charizard is both Fire and Dragon, well, you get the idea," Will explained.

"I hope Toby taught Charizard some moves during training," Lincoln commented.

"Alright Charizard, use Thunder Punch!" Toby instructed. Charizard then flew at Gyarados, then delivered a powerful punch, coated in electricity, which damaged Gyarados greatly.

"That was an Electric Type Move, right?" Randy asked.

"It was. Toby had Charizard learn it in anticipation of facing Water Type Pokemon," Will replied.

"Tsk, well...... even with Mega Evolution, Gyarados is still going to come out on top! Now, use Outrage!" Reji exclaimed. Gyarados then began to rampage around the battlefield, striking Charizard, who was determined to stay in the battle.

"Nice resolve Charizard! Now, give them back to back Thunder Punches!" Toby instructed. Charizard then began to use Thunder Punch repeatedly, causing tremendous damage to Gyarados. One of the punches was able to paralyze Gyarados too, preventing it from using Outrage anymore. Gyarados then started rampaging erratically, damaging itself.

"Outrage is a power Dragon Type Move, but it has a major drawback. It will lead to the user becoming confused," Will commented.

"Not to mention Gyarados is also paralyzed. This could be Toby's chance to finish the match," Fluttershy commented.

"Alright, Charizard, use Flamethrower!" Toby instructed. Charizard then shot off Flamethrower, which was able to finish off the weakened Gyarados. Once it fell unconscious, it reverted back to normal.

"Gyarados is unable to battle, the winner is Charizard! Therefore, moving on will be Toby!" the referee declared, as Charizard returned to normal.

"Nicely done Charizard!" Toby said. Charizard just flopped down, tired from battling, "Go ahead and take a nice long rest," Toby said, recalling his Pokemon.

"No...... this can't be........ I can't loose!" Reji screamed, loosing his cool. Toby backed away, trying to get to the exit quickly, while watching Reji for any hostile actions. It was eventually stadium security that escorted Reji out of the arena, along with Gyarados.

"Congrats on your win, Toby!" Silver Spoon called.

"Thanks! I'm going to take my Pokemon to the Pokemon Center!" Toby called back, leaving the arena.

"Now, for our next matchup, we have Chaz from Goldenrod City going up against Cletus of Striaton City! the announcer said, as both trainers entered the arena, and the battlefield changed to a rock battlefield.

"The next match shall now get under way! You both know the rules; only three Pokemon each, and you must defeat all of the other side's Pokemon to win, and may make substitutions as you see fit," the referee declared.

"Alright Cletus, only one of us can move on, and that's going to be me!" Chaz declared, tossing a Dusk Ball, releasing a Glalie.

"You talk a big game, my friend, but let's see if you can back it up!" Cletus said, as he tossed a Repeat Ball, which released a Magmar, and with that, the battle began.
