Forget not that I am a derp.

Most ponies seem to love like the sun, a single spot of intense, blazing passion. Starlight Glimmer is different. Her love feels like planets in the night sky. So many scattered lights, so far out of reach, and so hard to tell from the fixed stars.

Fortunately, she has a teacher who's very good at astronomy.

An entry in Bicyclette's Polyship Contest, written at the last minute because that's when the idea came to me. Rated Teen for frank discussion of physical attraction and a brief mention of suicidal ideation. Takes place immediately after "Uncommon Bond" (S7E24, the one with Starlight's favorite board game.)

Now with a reading by The Mystery Fluttershy Fan.

Or I get crushes really easily.

Welcome to my world, Starlight. :fluttershysad:

Starlight and Trixie are such an excellent ship, and Sunburst fits in so dang well.

Perhaps the worst part Trixie not leering at any point in that sentence. She didn't smirk, or sneer, or glance away with feigned indifference. She just wore the sincere smile that said the mask was off and the mare behind the scenes was happy to help her friend.

Possibly my favorite bit of this story! Lots of other good stuff, too, like insightful and helpful Twilight, weird Crystal Empire welcoming committee, and Cadance going all SQUEEE!!!.

So many wonderful little bits in this one.

But I guess my favorite one would be Cadence being completely in her element. Sheʼs like an excited little filly on Hearthʼs Warming morning.

Is it weird I kind of think Trixie and Cadance would be good friends now?

Starlight gave the answer Twilight had given her. “It’s the same reason Spike’s on the books as royal majordomo. Any princess without at least one paid subordinate is considered an evil queen by tax law.”

Stealing that for my fantasy settings

"We can say no more," gibbered Yellowish-Orange, "lest the wrath of the Lady of Ice and Darkness fall upon us."

And death lazers, can't forget that part of her portfolio

The Crystal Princess literally shining with that same love was new. Especially with given her grinning like Pinkie Pie and prancing like a filly about to meet her favorite pop star. The occasional crackle of magical discharge coming off her body only made "fit to burst" seem like an even more apt description.

She's having a cutie-mark-fueled energy rush

The crystal ponies bowed before their ruler. "We have brought the crystaller's wives as ordered, Your Highness!" chirped Pink.

Someone missed a memo, methinks

Starlight, head swimming with the sheer density of magic around the princess, managed to shout "Cadence! Do we get a say in this?"

Slam the brakes

"I'm still not accepting supplicants, Rhodochrosite," Cadence said with commendable patience.

That's the problem with cultists, most of the time they don't bother getting permission before they start

Absolutely wonderful.

Is Cadance going all crystal-y her natural powerset when expressed at the max? O because she was hyped up and near the heart?

Awww, so nice! Their welcome at the Crystal Empire was very unexpected, along with "Lady of Ice and Darkness"...

Any princess without at least one paid subordinate is considered an evil queen by tax law.”

I guess she's an evil queen then. mmm. Not like she can assign payment, or get an allowance yet.

Starlight leaned in closer. “What?”

“I thought we were already dating.”

HA! Great transition!

----
Typo:

"Oh, there will parades and feasts and fireworks—" > "Oh, there will be parades and feasts and fireworks—"

The adorable gurgles of the deathbringer haunts our dreams.

Love the continuity nod!
This is so much fun and it has a super awesome message  Hope to see more of these three in the future, but honestly, all your work is amazing

“Ah, tax fraud." Trixie gave an approving nod. "Finally, Sparkle does something I can respect.”

Outstanding Trixie voicing. And a very charming little tale to provide it.

While I am not a big fan of this ship, I must admit to enjoying the dynamics of the three in a polyamorous ship.
Also. the remark about evil queens and tax fraud. Good point.
Nice coda to that particular episode... Here, have a moustache :moustache:

Ri2

Whose journal was it?

Given that it takes place before the season 7 finale, it's probably meant to be Star Swirl's that plays a major part in that.

All else aside...the emotional dynamics of Startrixburst makes rough sea sailing in the proximity of Cat 5 hurricanes foals play...

You have The Great and Powerful Egotist in the Third Person.

The "I've never met a problem I haven't tried to enchant out of existence while ensnaring and subjugating every pony I see to my peculiar and ultimately failed political/economic vision", Alicorn level singular magic user.

Into this already volatile and dangerous mix, toss a nebbish and hopelessly clueless guy that haunts secondhand stores and flea markets for fun; with the odd compulsion to learn everything possible about a subject he is personally incapable of doing himself for the most part...

Two conclusions:

Either the admixture explodes and depopulates the entire planet...

Or somehow, the three of them so perfectly fit the missing pieces of the others that an entirely new element never before seen is created...

Maud nodded, the most movement she'd made since Starlight had started this horrible conversation. “You and Limestone have a lot in common.”

Hell yeah they do.

Semi-oddly, my favorite thing about this is Twilight and Starlight's platonic friendship, running through the whole thing and keeping Starlight centered. Thank god for that one friend you don't have a crush on, y'know?

11588899
Trixie has a wonderfully unique perspective on life. At least, that's how she'd describe it.

11588938
Yeah, Cadence practically bursting at the seams was a lot of fun to write. Being right next to the love-powered artifact didn't help. (Or did, depending on how you look at it.)

11588953
I can see it. Cadence gets somepony who can tell her tales of incredible adventure and grand displays of passion. Trixie gets somepony who can tell her Twilight's embarrassing foalhood exploits.

11588958

Stealing that for my fantasy settings

Glad to provide an idea worth stealing.

That's the problem with cultists, most of the time they don't bother getting permission before they start

As the Sunset of a different setting can attest, yes.

11588972
A little of Column A, a little of Column B.

11589007

I guess she's an evil queen then. mmm. Not like she can assign payment, or get an allowance yet.

The entire point of that conversation was to establish that Twilight can and does pay Starlight.

And yes, Flurry left quite the first impression on the crystal ponies.

11589009
"She thirsts! She calls for blood!"
"She calls for her Whammy."

11589211
All the gods feared gentle Aphrodite, who toyed with the heart of Zeus as easily as that of a slave.

11589264
I am quite proud of that line, yes.

11590432
Alicorns help moderate the reaction, which really says something about its sheer volatility.

11590762
Twilight and Starlight have a relationship similar to Twilight and Spike: Their cycles of madness are synced such that at least one of them is sane at any given time. Generally speaking.

And yeah, Limelight (Starstone?) feels like a surprisingly viable ship provided that neither tries to kill the other within ten minutes of them meeting.

11591316

"She thirsts! She calls for blood!"
"She calls for her Whammy."

"I've read Uzumaki, that horror from beyond the stars can't fool me."

I like Starlight. She's proof that just because your life and relationships are disasters doesn't mean they're going badly.

Journal of who indeed.

Great story though!

I especially loved the bit about tax law.

Thanks for providing more of my favorite ship!

Any princess without at least one paid subordinate is considered an evil queen by tax law.”

--sorry what?

Loved this, FOME. Thank you for it.

I fully accept the headcanon that Cadance gets high and accidentally love-brainwashes the entire city whenever she's matchmaking.

“Consider it fair warning.” Starlight steadied her stance, took a deep breath, ran out of ways to stall, and blurted out the question before she could think of any more. “How do you know when friendship becomes love?”

hehe, very important clarification earlier! Glimmy is thinking ahead!

Between the crystals, the mushrooms, and the hanging lanterns, it also gave Starlight plenty to focus on other than Maud herself, who hadn’t so much as twitched in the minute since Starlight’s confession of possible affection.

extremely Maud reaction

“It’s nothing personal. Unicorns just don’t do it for me.”

oof…

Maud nodded, the most movement she'd made since Starlight had started this horrible conversation. “You and Limestone have a lot in common.”

hahaha i never considered this, but…

Twilight shrugged her free wing. "Polyamory is unusual, but it's not completely unheard of. Did you really think I'd disapprove of other ponies making you happy?"

hehehe

Starlight cleared her throat and tried not think about the warmth in her cheeks. That only made the blush worse. "It wouldn't be the first time you were shocked by something I thought was perfectly normal."

aww so true

"You and your friends are different; that would be like falling for my parole officer."

ahahahaha

Suddenly caring about five other mares…"

ooooooh… omniship???

“I thought we were already dating.”

Starlight blinked. “What?”

Trixie cocked an eyebrow and, with a deceptively effortless-looking flick of her horn, flipped open the stage component of her wagon. She vaulted onto the boards, horn still lit, and pulled out a familiar, star-speckled, and slightly chewed helmet. “The Great and Powerful Trixie attempting suicide by manticore at the thought of her true love forsaking her wasn’t enough of a hint?”

so true actually this is 10000% how this conversation would go

Trixie reared up, horn ablaze. The mechanisms in the wagon's mortar tubes clacked. The tubes themselves weren't loaded, and thus fireworks failed to fill the sky with color, sound, and noise complaints. It was probably for the best.

love this, so Trixie in every way

“Trekking through miles of tundra on hoof for a single venue never seemed like a good idea." Trixie sneered at the tail of a passing conductor. "And you don’t want to know what the trains charge for loading a wagon full of pyrotechnics.”

aww! Trixie’s travels being limited to where she went with her wagon her whole life makes so much sense but is something i never considered

“I’m actually the royal librarian of Namepending Castle until I get my own place.”

hehe always love this name for it

Starlight gave the answer Twilight had given her. “It’s the same reason Spike’s on the books as royal majordomo. Any princess without at least one paid subordinate is considered an evil queen by tax law.”

“Ah, tax fraud." Trixie gave an approving nod. "Finally, Sparkle does something I can respect.”

love this. and as we all know, Trixie canonically loves tax fraud

After a few moments of thought, Starlight hazarded, "I trust you?"

Trixie darted in for a kiss. Just a quick peck on the lips, but it was more than Starlight had expected. Likewise the watery-eyed look of gratitude as Trixie said, "That's the most romantic thing anypony's ever said to me."

augh so true

That got a solemn nod. "Such is the tragedy of Trixie."

exactly what Trixie would say

The Crystal Princess literally shining with that same love was new. Especially with given her grinning like Pinkie Pie and prancing like a filly about to meet her favorite pop star. The occasional crackle of magical discharge coming off her body only made "fit to burst" seem like an even more apt description.

about what i’d expect from Cadance when one of her longshot ships come true

"Hold on," Trixie said even as Cadence let them go, "I like where she's going."

so Trixie

"For what it's worth," said Cadence, "I can feel the love between you three, and…

the existence of love magic sure takes a lot of the guesswork about this “feelings” stuff sometimes, convenient!

"I'm still not accepting supplicants, Rhodochrosite," Cadence said with commendable patience.

hehe, love it

"The journal of who!?"

ahaha love this connection to the canon! honestly makes Sunburst randomly stumbling on the journal feel more natural, somehow?

adorable stuff, and very true to these characters’ dynamic. thank you for it!

I'm only sad I didn't read this sooner cuz oh my goodness this was grand fun. These three really do make such a cute throuple and Cadence's...admirer's are hilarious.

The Crystal Palace was always a breathtaking sight, an monumental triumph of construction methods lost to the ages and Sombra's cruel reign.

Pretty sure that should be "a monumental...."
Anyway, I would've laughed aloud except I'm trying not to wake my wife. Great work.

"Hold on," Trixie said even as Cadence let them go, "I like where she's going."

Damn Trixie moves faster than even Rainbow Dash.

Cute story. It's nice to have Twilight's advice be actually helpful for once in these kind of stories.
