Smiling, carefree parasprites now roam the gilded corridors of Canterlot Castle, and not a single pony can be found. Celestia and Luna have temporarily abandoned and quarantined the premises, staying elsewhere while they argue over the best method to go about removing the adorable trash that has infested their home. Unfortunately, parasprites are not the only intrusive thing that have now taken up a presence in the castle during the sisters' brief absence.

Inexplicably teleported in from the sheer amount of valuable possessions being left unguarded, the Norsemen have arrived.

It was 9 A.D.. Three Roman legions were destroyed in an ambush by an alliance of Germanic tribes led by Arminius. Most legionnaires were killed in the ambush, while the survivors were captured by the victorious barbarians. The defeat was so complete that the three Roman legions' numbers were never used again.

What if, however, a certain senior centurion serving in the Eighteenth legion actually survived the ambush? What if, instead of having died in the disastrous battle, went to Equestria through means of a portal to live out the rest of his life there?

(This is my first fanfic, so please help me out by pointing out my errors and offering some advice.)

The royal court of Canterlot welcomes its newest member with open forelegs: the human philosopher Voltaire, from Earth.

On Earth, Voltaire is known as the greatest enemy of tyranny in the history of literature, and a legend in his own mind.

On Equestria, the court betting pool is giving him a week before the Princess banishes him to the Moon.

Note: This story doesn't have sequels per se, but there are a couple of short follow-ups set in the present day ("Parade Coverage" and "Secret Histories"), and a prequel of sorts in "At the Inn of the Prancing Pony".
