In the aftermath of banishing her corrupted sister, Celestia is left to tend to a land ravaged by fear of their own rulers, political discontent, racial tensions between the three tribes and her own crushing loneliness. A thousand years is a long time to wait for the return of the pony she was closer to than anyone else in the world; long enough that she needs to make other connections with other ponies to prevent herself from going mad and following her sister into corruption. The question is, can one pony ever be strong enough to rule a land for a thousand years and be both a good ruler and a good pony?

Written as a Patreon reward for Echo Located, who asked for a first person story about Celestia during the period of Luna's absence based on the poem 'The Seven Ages of Man' by William Shakespeare.

Bon-Bon never asked to be a monster-killing secret warrior of the night. It's a lonely life in which she cannot afford to get close to ponies. After previous losses took their toll, she has closed off her heart and dedicated herself to never letting herself love anypony ever again.

Then she is sent to Ponyville.

Then Twilight Sparkle is sent there too.

Then Princess Luna returns from the moon.

Not to mention that darn unicorn neighbour Lyra won’t leave her alone.

And suddenly everything becomes much more complicated.

Twilight Sparkle will not pass up on this incredible opportunity – a batpony stallion came to stay in Ponyville and is willing to share knowledge and information! It would allow to finally fill all the gaps in Equestrian knowledge about their species!

Harder than pulling off a sonic rainboom in front of a cloud of ponies who don’t believe you can do it. Harder than … other hard things. That are hard to do. Yeah.

The Crystal Empire had returned after an eternity in limbo and with it, its dark king escaped his tomb of ice. Equestria sent its most capable ponies to defend and secure the Crystal Empire, they fought admirably, but they ultimately failed to safekeep the heart of the empire. The Dyads fell, King Sombra retained his throne, and darkness blemishes the northern skies once again.

Equestria is now in the midst of recuperating, preparing itself for a large-scale siege to take back the empire and free it from King Sombra’s influence. However, the dark king will not rest until Equestria is no longer a threat. He is not above doing whatever it takes to prevent Harmony from spreading into the Crystal Empire, and he has the perfect tool to carry out his whim.

Who is Sunset Shimmer? In Equestria Girls, she ruled a high school with an iron fist before being blasted into a hole by rainbow lasers. In Rainbow Rocks, she won the hearts of bronies everywhere by rising up to fight evil for the sake of her friends even in the face of serious adversity. But, who was she before all this? "The Fall of Sunset Shimmer" showed us the beginning of her descent into darkness. "Equestria Girls Holiday Special" revealed that she wasn't even close to her own family. Yet, there is so much more we have yet to know about her. How did she become Celestia's student? Who was her family and what happened to them? This story is my attempt to fill in those blanks. Enjoy. Sunset Shimmer is a smart girl; she knows staying in her apartment for weeks is unhealthy and recovering from a breakdown requires rejoining the outside world. However, she has not mustered up the courage to do so, largely because she is unable to trust her newfound "friends". She still wants to see them in hopes of proving herself wrong. Sunset Shimmer originally went to Freeport to escape Celestia's influence, and to make some progress towards becoming an alicorn princess. She's certainly done her share of good in the infamous city of rogues, but after almost two years away from Canterlot she doesn't feel any closer to achieving her big goals. At this point, any reasonable pony could wonder if they made a mistake...

Faced with the unpleasant prospect of possibly going back to Canterlot in order to advance her goals, Sunset finds herself with one last option to preserve her independence: the great dragon Argentium the Runescaled, far to the north, wants to meet with her. However, her journey becomes far more than a simple social call, and Sunset has no idea just how much danger she and her friends will face.

Or how much she'll have to sacrifice—not just for her dreams, but survival.
