You do know negative reinforcement means taking away something bad to reward and reinforce a behaviour it does not mean punishment

There is such a thing in psychology as positive punishment which is giving something to discouraged a behaviour such as when children used to be smacked for doing something wrong

Didn't know that actually, and given that it's an un-intuitive definition from common English words I can only assume the person who coined the term thought they were being clever. Either way, that simply means that instead of Luna punishing Twilight with something unpleasant, it means the reward is that Luna stops doing something unpleasant.

I think it sort of makes sense.

Negative as in subtracting or taking away, so they reinforce a good behavior by subtracting an unwanted thing from the situation when the good behavior is done.

Secondary meaning as in of a person /atitude /situation of undesirable or not optimistic. It's also used very frequently to mean the opposite of a positive. So it would follow then that 'negative reinforcement' would read as either 'reinforcement via something unpleasant' or that the reinforcement itself is unpleasant.

The idea of it being reinforcement through absence uses an unexpected meaning of the word. Which is why most medical professionals go out of their way to use greek or latin.

They're fairly old terms, so it could also be that they lined up with their meaning perfectly well back in the day, but the evolution of language over the past several decades has made it less intuitive.

But you're certainly not alone. I know that I had difficulty keeping all four combinations straight at first.
