There really is no excuse for forgetting something as important as a hoof-written law. But Celestia forgot. And now, a thousand years after she wrote it, a law comes into play mandating that Celestia take a two-month sabbatical from her duties as Princess of Equestria.
So what happens when she has to step down for a couple months and leave Luna by herself in the bloody gladiator ring that is Equestrian politics? What happens when Celestia has to disguise herself and mingle with the populace of Ponyville without them knowing?
The short answer to that would be "a string of hilarious chance encounters, sisterly banter, romantic mishaps, and a political coup that was decades in the making."
The long answer, of course, is this story.

Celestia wants Twilight and her friends to loosen up a little bit around her. Luna just wants to try the hard cider. During a surprise visit to Sweet Apple Acres at the tail end of cider season, Princess Luna has just a bit too much to drink, and when she makes a rather inappropriate joke, Twilight comes to the very uncomfortable realization that she has never seen Celestia excuse herself to use the restroom.
Twilight Sparkle finds a book in the library.
Twilight Sparkle reads aforementioned book.
Twilight Sparkle's life is thrown upside down, her view of her teacher shattered, and her friends pitted against each other.
Everything will return to normal.
One of these statements is false.
When a mishap occurs with Celestia's bathroom scale, an ancient protocol that may just doom Equestria is set into motion. With the entire palace staff now conspiring against her, the sun goddess must not only contend mountains of paper work, dancing celery sticks, and steroid pumped stallions, but a sister who will take this chance to torture Celestia any way she can as payback for her banishment. It was supposed to be a simple task: drop Cerberus off at the Gates of Tartarus, the prison doors for Equestria's greatest and most terrible monsters. Little did Twilight know it was host to an entirely different prison: the SCP Foundation.
Twilight is enthralled with the sheer amount of knowledge and power the Foundation contains. They are likewise willing to bring her on board. After all, who can stop a black ops facility that doesn't officially exist?
Celestia, if she has any say in the matter, and she promised there would be hell to pay if the Foundation harmed her student.
This story is a sequel to Site 16 - The Tartarus Gate
This is not our world. We are a grain of sand on the beach. A star in the fabric of the midnight sky. We share this world with horrors beyond imagining and comprehension, but the Foundation cannot ask for aid. We are alone in this war. We trudge through the darkness so that the world can enjoy one more day in the light. We do not steal the truth, we secure the truth so people may live normal lives. We do not lie to protect ourselves, we lie to contain evil and danger. We do not rule, we protect the innocent from the juggernauts of the earth. It is our destiny to suffer so that others may go about their lives in peace.
We Secure. We Contain. We Protect.

Going up to the roof for some fresh air after pulling and all-nighter, our "hero" makes the mistake of closing his eyes for a bit.
When he opens them again, he is no longer on the rooftop in Copenhagen he was expecting to be on... no he's somewhere very different, and extremely unfamiliar.
How will he react? How will the ponies react? Nothing is certain, except for one thing...
He never asked for this.
This story takes place about 8'ish years after the second season of MLP:FiM, the language of Equestria does not match any earth languages (that the main character knows of at least), and the human in question knows nothing of these ponies or the world of Equestria.
He emerges into Equestria on the roof of a building in Manehattan, not the Everfree, not Ponyville and certainly not one of the princesses' bedrooms in Canterlot Castle.
Oh! Spoilers in the comments and all that jazz, not gonna go into a whole spiel about it.
