Chapter 62: Summer Job

Everybody was packing their stuff as they were getting ready to head back to Canterlot. The students were thanking Gloriosa and Timber for a memorable week at Camp Everfree. Both of them thanked the girls for all they did; they were extremely grateful to Isaac as he had managed to not only save Gloriosa, but also humiliate Filthy Rich with ease. Isaac just told them he was happy to help and said that if they ever needed his help dealing with Filthy Rich again, that they shouldn't hesitate to call him. Soon Isaac got on the bus as he prepared himself for the long drive back. He glanced out the window where he saw Twilight talking with Timber before she got on the bus and took a seat next to him.

"So, let me guess, he gave you his number?" said Isaac.

"Actually, I told him that how grateful he and his sister were for showing us a wondertime at camp. But to also cheer up that I wouldn't be his girlfriend." said Twilight.

"What!?" said Isaac with a shocked look on his face. "Why not? Didn't you have a fun time with him last night?"

"I did, but when he pulled me to the side. He told me that he had feelings for me. So I of course was shocked to hear that, but unfortunately, I told him that I couldn't return those same feelings." Twilight then quickly looked away while hiding the red that was forming. "I've developed feelings for another person." said Twilight in a soft tone.

"Really, well whoever they are, know that they're lucky to have someone like you. Now I just have to figure out who this guy is so that he doesn't do anything to upset or break your heart." said Isaac, to which Twilight just let out a giggle at Isaac's dense behavior.

Soon they were on the road as everybody waved goodbye. The drive back was just as long as it was to get there, however Pinkie was able to keep everybody entertained by singing some road songs. Isaac knew where this was going so he popped in his headphones as he tried to drown out Pinkie's crazy antics. Eventually the smooth ride caused everybody to doze off as they all closed their eyes and fell asleep. Isaac woke up as he caught a quick glance of surroundings, he saw that everybody around him had all decided to get some shut eye. He then looked at his shoulder as he felt and saw Twilight as her head rested on his shoulder. She was also cuddling his arm, Isaac just let out a smile as he pushed up Twilight's glasses from falling off. Isaac then turned to look out the window for the rest of the ride. It wasn't long before the bus had finally reached the city of Canterlot; the bus then arrived as it pulled into the parking lot.

Everybody had finally woken up from their nap, Twilight opened her eyes as was surprised to see that she was clinging to Isaac's arm. She quickly let go while trying to hide the red on her face, Isaac was already awake when Twilight woke up, but he was too busy playing a game on his phone to notice her reaction. With that, everybody grabbed their bags and waved one last goodbye to all their fellow classmates until school started in the fall. Isaac then got his stuff and made his way home where he was greeted with a warm embrace from his parents. He then made his way to his room where Tigre was napping as he woke her up and lied down on his bed.

"Ahh, it's good to be home."

With school out, everybody was making sure that they make the most of their summer. Summertime was also a good time for dueling because, the dueling community knew that everybody wasn't in school. So there was a ton of events that would be taking place during the course of the summer months and people were looking to showcase their skills. Normally, that would be something anybody would enjoy, except for Isaac. See as much as he wanted to take part in events like these, he had more important matters to attend right now. He was currently on the lookout for a job, before they left Camp Everfree, Isaac was making a list of the things he wanted to do during his summer break. At the top of that list was getting a summer job. He figured that he wanted to make his own hard earned money; so with that he began job searching. The girls all wanted to help him, but he told them that he wanted to do this on his own.

Isaac was now looking through the different malls going to every store to see if they had an positions open. Suffice to say that most openings were either not hiring at the moment, or there was a waitlist. With that Isaac couldn't do much but say thanks and was on his way. While he was searching, he got a phone call from Celestia which really shocked him as he was afraid that his own principal could contact him. She just wished him a safe summer and told him that she was having some more events planned for him. Isaac was both interested and confused by what Celestia was talking about; she just told him that he shouldn't worry about it but that when she needed to reach him, she'll let him know.

"Another day with no progress." said Isaac as he was walking down the sidewalk. "At this rate, I'll never find a job." Isaac then noticed some kids who nearly bumped into him. "Hey watch it." Isaac then heard the sound of a doorbell ring as it closed from where the kids came from. "Huh, never seen this place before." Isaac was now looking at a small shop that was in front of him. "Couldn't hurt to take a look?" With that Isaac entered the place.

The doorbell rang as Isaac took a look around. Despite being small on the outside, the inside of the shop was a bit bigger than expected. Isaac began looking around as he saw this store had a lots of games that ranged from board games to playing cards to even paper and pen activities. Isaac enjoyed what he was seeing until he came to a section of the store where there was a glass case. And inside the glass case was nothing but Duel Monster cards that lay in rows; Isaac couldn't take his eyes off the beautiful sight that was in front of him. He put his hands on the glass as he wanted to take a closer.

"I've never seen so many cards in one place." said Isaac.

"Impressive, isn't it?" spoke a mysterious voice.

Isaac turned around and there was a old man standing there, he didn't look that old as based on his appearance he looked to be in his fifties. The old man just had a smile on his face as he noticed Isaac's enjoyment towards his card collection.

"I'll say, I've never know someone to have this many cards. I thought I had a lot but this something else." said Isaac with a smile on his voice.

"Well, this is a card shop. Do you expect me not to have that many cards?" chuckled the old man. He then stared at Isaac with a close eye. "Say kid, you wouldn't happen to be a duelist would you?"

Isaac then turned back to address the old man. "Yeah, how did you know?"

"Let's say that I've had my fair share of seeing a couple of duelists in my life. Plus that deck holder on your belt is a dead give away." said the old man as he pointed to Isaac's side.

"Oh yeah." Isaac then took out his deck. "These cards have been with me for as long as I can remember."

"I see. I can tell that both you and your cards share a special connection that I've only seen once in my life."

"Thanks for that, uhm..."

The old man cleared his voice, "Forgive me, just call me Mr. Johnson. I'm the owner of this place."

"Pleasure to make your acquaintance, Mr. Johnson. I'm Isaac." Isaac shock his hand.

"Say mind if I ask a request: Can I please see your deck? I promise I won't do anything to it." Mr. Johnson then held his hand out.

Isaac was a bit hesitant on handing over his deck to strangers, but from the way Mr. Johnson spoke, it seemed like he was a nice person.

"Sure."

With that, Isaac took out his deck and gave it to the old man.

Mr. Johnson then felt the weight of Isaac's deck. He then began to look through as he examined each card. He got to the end of it as the last two cards he saw were none other than Isaac's Dark Magician and Dark Magician Girl. He didn't say much other that he simply looking at them with a smile on his face. "You have some pretty powerful cards, kid. I can tell you're a talented duelist." said Mr. Johnson as he gave Isaac back his deck.

"Thanks, it's one of the reason why I'm ranked as the champion of my school." said Isaac as he took back his deck.

"Say now, how you would like a job working here?" asked Mr. Johnson.

"Really? You're serious?" said Isaac. "I would love working here, what would I do?"

"Simple stuff really like: cleaning the shop, selling stuff, even helping to unload the new card deliveries when they come out. See I'm not as young as I once was, and it's all starting to get too much for one person to handle; so I figured why have an assistance of sorts to help me run this place." said Mr. Johnson.

"I'd be honored to work in a place like this. So when can I start?" asked Isaac excitedly.

"Hold your horses, youngster. I can't hand you the job, there are somethings you need to do first."

"Oh, right." said Isaac as he couldn't believe he was getting ahead of himself. "So what kind of paperwork do I need to fill out?".

"Actually, that's not what I had in mind. In fact, I was thinking of duel instead." suggested Mr. Johnson.

"A duel?" Isaac had an eyebrow raised as he found this rather suspicious.

"It's been a while since I've last had a duel. So I figured I test your skills in a duel; if you win, I'll give you the job. Care to entertain me, young man?" said Mr. Johnson.

Once Mr. Johnson finished his proposal, Isaac then began to think. On one hand he was looking to get a job and this was the perfect fit for him. On the other hand, if he lost the duel then that would mean he would be out of luck once again. So after much deliberation, Isaac had made his decision.

"Alright, I'll do it."

With that, they both made their way to the back of the store.

Mr. Johnson and Isaac were now in the back of the store in the storage area. He had a mini space where they could have their duel. With that Isaac slotted on his duel disk and his deck. Mr. Johnson then reached into a box and took out an old duel disk as he blew the dust off. Isaac was impressed to say the least as he had plenty of experience using one of those old school duel disks when he was growing up. Mr. Johnson then dug deeper into the box and pulled out a smaller box; he opened it and inside was a deck of cards. With that he slotted in his deck and turned on his duel disk as he turned to face Isaac.

"I see you have one those fancy duel disks that all the kids have these days." said Mr. Johnson.

"Yeah, but I've seen my fair of old style duel disk growing up." Isaac then activated his duel disk which project a gold card tray. "Now then, it's time to duel!"

"Opponent detected. Streaming data. Duel mode set. Initiating. Commencing duel." said the mechanical voice of the duel disk.

Mr. Johnson's Life Points: 8000-

Isaac's Life Points: 8000-

Turn 1: Mr. Johnson

"In my book, experience goes first." Mr. Johnson then drew his opening hand and picked up his top card. "Here's a move that takes me back to my youth, I'll play my Skilled White Magician(1700/1900)." Out came a spellcaster that was covered in white robes from head to toe. "Next I'll play the spell card, Emblem of the Dragon Destroyer. Now I'll add a 'Buster Blader from my deck to my hand." Mr. Johnson's deck then slotted out the card for him to grab, then a light when off on his magician.

"Cool, a Buster Blader deck. Haven't face one of those yet." said Isaac with excitement.

"I can tell you're passionate about Duel Monsters. Yes, this is my personal deck that I used when I was a still a young lad. Now then I'll place one card facedown." said Mr. Johnson as his face materialized in front of him.

Turn 2: Isaac

"Alright then, time to show you what I got old geezer." Isaac then drew his card and looked through his options. "I'll do a similar move like you, I play my Skilled Dark Magician in attack mode." Now Isaac had similar spellcaster but this was wearing darker robes. "Next I'll special summon my Apprentice Illusion Magician, so I'll send a card to the graveyard and with it I'll summon my monster. But that's not all, when my Apprentice Illusion Magician is summoned, I can add a 'Dark Magician' to my hand." Isaac then touched his screen as he selected the card that he wanted and added it to his hand. "Now time to take out your monster, I'll have my Skilled Dark Magician attack your Skilled White Magician and then Apprentice Illusion Magician will attack you directly." With their command given, Isaac's magicians then dealt some major damage to Mr. Johnson's life points.
Mr. Johnson's Life Points: 5800-

"I'll then end my turn with a facedown."

"Not bad, you really know your stuff. Reminds me of when I was younger." Mr. Johnson knew there was something special about Isaac and he was right.

Turn 3: Mr. Johnson

"Well lets see if my skills are still what they used to be," Mr. Johnson drew his card and had a small smile on his face. "Nice, now I'll play the spell Polymerization and with it I'll fuse the Buster Blader in my hand with my Curse of Dragon." Mr. Johnson's monsters then appeared and then disappeared as they changed into forms of energy and then combined together as they were sucked into the vortex. "Appear, Buster Blader, the Dragon Destroyer Swordsman(2800/2500)!" Out came a fierce warrior that wore shiny armor as it wielded a great big sword.

"Woah, now that's a monster!" said Isaac as he was in awe.

"This card has been by my side since I was your age. Now time to show you his power, Buster Blader take out his Apprentice Illusion Magician." Buster Blader then leaped into the air as it brought its mighty sword down and took out Isaac's magician.
Isaac's Life Points: 7200-

"Not bad." said Isaac.

"If you thought that was good, wait until my next move. For now I'll just place another card facedown and end my turn."

Turn 4: Isaac

"Alright, my turn." Isaac picked up his card and began to formulate his plan. "For now I'll just place this monster facedown in defense mode. Next I'll place the spell card, Graceful Charity. So I'll draw three cards and discard two." With that Isaac picked up a few more cards and then selected the ones he wanted to get rid of. "Then I'll place another card facedown and end my turn."

Turn 5: Mr. Johnson

"Seems you're going on the defensive, not that I blame you." Mr. Johnson then drew his card. "Not that will help you much, now I'll play the spell Monster Reborn. So with it, I'll bring out my long time buddy, Buster Blader!" Mr. Johnson now had managed to have two versions of his ace monster with one of the being the original monster. "Now time for my monsters to strike, my Buster Blader, the Dragon Destroyer Swordsman will take out your defense monster while my Buster Blader will strike down your Skilled Dark Magician. My first Buster Blader has an effect that allows him to deal piercing damage to a monster in defense mode."

"In that case, I'll activate my facedown. I play Mirror Force, now your attack is directed right back at you!" shouted Isaac.

"I'd expect something like that from you, so I had this ready. I reveal my facedown, Seven Tools of the Bandit. So I'll pay 1000 life points and as a result I'll get rid of your Mirror Force. Now my monsters' attacks continue and you lose even more life points that I paid to activate my trap." With that both swordsman then brought their mighty swords down and got rid of Isaac's field as they also manage to deal some damage to him as well.
Isaac's Life Points: 5300-
Mr. Johnson's Life Points: 4800-

"Well, what do think kid? Not bad for an old timer."

Isaac got back up as he answered Mr. Johnson's question. "I'll say this duel is turning out to be pretty fun. You actually got to summon your star monster and was able to display its power. Now I really want to work here." said Isaac with a smile on his face.

Mr. Johnson just had a smile on his face at how Isaac was acting. The kid really does love Duel Monsters; he's just like me when I was his age. Always being fascinated by how much joy the game could bring to one's self.

Turn 6: Isaac

"Now that you've got your ace monster on the field, time for me to do the same. Here we go, draw." Isaac drew his card and he knew what to do. "Now time to shift this duel into high gear, so I'll start by playing my Ancient Rules spell card. So now I'll introduce you to my star monster, appear my most loyal companion, Dark Magician." Dark Magician then came out as he took his position by his beloved monster. "But I'm not done, next I'll play the spell Bond Between Teacher and Student. So now I can also summon my Dark Magician Girl." Now Isaac had his two spellcasters join his side as they were ready for battle.

Mr. Johnson now was able to get a closer look at the relationship of Isaac and his magicians. When he first looked through Isaac's deck, he could tell that Isaac valued his cards. Especially his two top magicians as they gave off a sort of resonance; he could tell that they had been through some tough situations that as a result helped strength their bonds.

"Now my spell causes me to set my Dark Burning Attack. But before I activate it, I'll play my Dark Magic Twin Burst. So my Dark Magician gains more attack points from my Dark Magician Girl which raises his attack to 4500." Mana then raised her wand as she transferred some of her strength to her teacher.

"In response, I'll play other facedown card, Fiendish Chain. Now I'll negate the effect of your Dark Magician Girl and now she can't attack." responded Mr. Johnson.

"Then it's a good thing I have this; I reveal my facedown, Dark Illusion. Now when a spell/trap or monster effect is activated that targets a Dark monster on the field, I can play this spell and as a result your trap is negated and I destroy it." Isaac's card then revealed a shadowing figure who clawed at Mr. Johnson's trap as it slash and rendered it useless. "With your Fiendish Chain gone, my plan can continue. So I'll then play the spell I set earlier, Dark Burning Attack. Now since I have both of my favorite magicians, I can use this spell to wipe out your entire field. So my two magicians take out his monsters." Mahad and Mana both received their orders and raised their weapons as they cleared/destroyed everything in their path.

Mr. Johnson covered his eyes to avoid being blinded by the very bright light. When it died down, there was nothing but smoke and magical particles that lingered behind as Isaac's magicians had taken the liberty of clearing his entire field without breaking a sweat.

"Now that you have nothing to defend you, time to end this duel. Now my magicians attack him directly and end this duel!" shouted Isaac as he pointed his finger. With that Isaac's monsters then took flight as they combined their powers and took out the remaining points of Mr. Johnson who put his arm up to cover himself.
Mr. Johnson's Life Points: 0-

Winner: Isaac

After the duel ended, Mr. Johnson then fell to his knees after taking Isaac's attack. Isaac then ran over to his side to make sure that he was okay.

"Are you okay?" asked Isaac with concern in his voice.

Mr. Johnson just chuckled at Isaac's question. "I'm fine, in fact, I'm better than fine. Ohh, what a rush. That duel took me back to when I was young and in my prime. Thank you, Isaac. That was the duel I needed to revitalize my spirit."

Isaac just returned with a smile and a chuckle of his own. "It was my pleasure." Isaac then helped Mr. Johnson up. "So, seeing as how I won, when do I start?"

"Yeah, a deal is a deal. I look forward to working with you." Mr. Johnson then extended his hand out.

"As do I." Isaac said as he shook Mr. Johnson's hand.

"However, there is some paperwork that you do need to fill out." said Mr. Johnson.

After that duel, Isaac was now given his job and he was ready to get to work. Mr. Johnson told him the ins and outs of the place, he showed them the storage area where they would unload the weekly card deliveries and told them where to display them so that the customers could see and eventually purchase them. The one thing that he mentioned that really caught Isaac's attention was that every other week they would mini events/tournaments that the kids all enjoyed as they would partake in. The winner would get to choose a few cards that they wanted. With that, Isaac even offered some suggestions on how to draw in some more consumers. He told Mr. Johnson about offering the kids some lessons on Duel Monsters; due to Isaac having experience on teaching kids, he told him that he would do it. Mr. Johnson agreed and with that they were in business as Isaac's first day would soon begin.

Isaac arrived at the place and he helped Mr. Johnson with opening the shop. The first thing he did was arrange the letters of the front of the shop, once Isaac finished aligning them, he took a good look to which the name spelled out: Mr. Johnson's Games Emporium. With that the next thing was making sure that everything was ready for the public, so both got to work cleaning the windows and the card display cases, dusting/mopping the floor, and even unloading the new cards. With that they were ready as the first of their customers entered. Immediately, all the little kids rushed from their parents as they wanted to get a good look at the new cards. Isaac was able to answer any questions they had on specific cards as he had a vast knowledge of Duel Monster cards. Some of the parents even asked him on what specifics they should get for their kids, so after learning some more info about what they liked and preferences, he was able to recommend the proper sets/cards.

Soon it was time for the first lesson, as Mr. Johnson told Isaac to get into position. Isaac then grabbed his duel disk and his deck as he made his way to the section of the store where their were a couple of chairs and a few tables. Some of the kids were excited as they had a couple of cards in their hands. Soon Isaac was in front of the table as he began his lesson. He did what he normally did by asking a few questions in general to get a grasp of his audience. Mr. Johnson watched from behind the counter as he saw the faces of the little kids be amazed with Isaac's teachings. They were especially ecstatic when Isaac showed off his two star magicians; the kids were have the biggest of eyes as they couldn't believe they got to saw some amazing monsters. Isaac showed off some dueling methods and he even allowed the kids to try his cards. With that, Isaac brought some starter boxes and allowed the kids to participate in a draft as they collected cards to create a deck and battle. Some of them wanted to battle Isaac, so he entertained them by dueling against some of them. With that nearly everybody had a good time, especially Mr. Johnson as he was making some decent profits. So much so that he needed Isaac to help him with the purchases, so Isaac rushed to help the adults/kids get the items they wanted while helping out Mr. Johnson.

While Isaac was stocking some shelfs, some of the parents pulled Mr. Johnson aside and told him how appreciative they found Isaac to be. Not only did he keep the kids entertained, but it allowed the parents to get a breather from their constant energy. Not to mention that the way Isaac was able to explain the mechanics of the game, even caught the interest of the parents as they felt like they understood a bit more of the game so that they could potentially talk about it with their kids. Overall today proved to be a successful day. It was now evening time as Isaac was currently sweeping the floor while Mr. Johnson was doing some last minute inventory behind the counter.

"Seems today was a success for your first day on the job."

"Tell me about it, the kids were so interested in my lessons that they couldn't stop talking about it. I could see the expressions on their little faces when I showed them my cards." said Isaac as he was cleaning the floor.

"Oh, I know. The parents were really ecstatic about seeing their kids happy, they even offered some praises about you." Mr. Johnson then pulled out a list of compliments that the customers had written about Isaac's performance. "According to what the adults said, they found you to be very informative, not to mention friendly when it comes to working with kids. Also very intelligent in terms of the game, why there were a couple of adults that purchased some cards for themselves as they became invested in your lessons. Of course, the biggest one was when they got to see you duel. All of them agreed that you dueling was a work of art, they believed that you were putting on quality duels. They all believed that you could make it big in the pro leagues."

That last comment caused Isaac to crack a small smile as he was glad to hear that the adults thought of him so highly. He was glad that he was able to make their day better by entertaining their kids as well as share his talents with everybody. However, that last review of them saying that he could be successful should he decided to join the pro circuit, really got to him. His whole life, people always said to Isaac that if he really wanted to then he could make a big splash in the pro circuit and would be successful. It was nice to think that people saw his skills were that talented but he just didn't know if that was really want he wanted to do with his life. He quickly put it out of his thought, "Well I'm glad they were satisfied." Just then the doorbell rang as a customer had walked in, which caused both of them to turn their heads.

"Mind taking care of them, Isaac?" said Mr. Johnson as he was wrapping up the last of his inventory.

"Of course, Mr. Johnson." said Isaac as he made his way to the front of the store. "Welcome to Mr. Johnson's Games Emporium, how can I..." Isaac didn't finish his thought as he got to get a good look at who had entered the place.

"Oh my gosh, Isaac. Don't tell me, do you work?" asked Twilight.

"Uh.. Twilight? Spike? Yeah, this is my new job." said Isaac as he looked at the two who entered the place.

"Congratulation, I figured this would be the type of work you get into." Twilight then gave Isaac a hug. At that point, Mr. Johnson just finished up and came to see how Isaac was doing. He then saw Twilight standing there giving Isaac a hug.

"How are things Is... Oh, hope I'm not interrupting anything?" said Mr. Johnson.

"Mr. Johnson!" shouted Isaac as he turned to face him with Twilight letting go of her hug. "Not at all, I was just talking with a friend of mine. Mr. Johnson meet Twilight and her dog Spike, Twilight this my boss." said Isaac as he introduced the both of them.

"Hello sir" waved Twilight.

"Hello young lady." waved Mr. Johnson back.

"Hey." barked Spike which got Mr. Johnson a bit stunned that he was hearing a talking dog. Just as he was about to ask, Spike just responded, "It's a long story, short version is magic."

"Anyways, hope we weren't interrupting Isaac while he was working." said Twilight.

"Not at all, who I am to keep Isaac from seeing his girlfriend." laughed Mr. Johnson.

"Woah, woah." said Isaac as both turned red from Mr. Johnson's comment. "Twilight isn't my girlfriend, Mr. Johnson. She's just a friend."

"My apologizes then, I just assumed that the way she was hugging you that the both of you were together. My mistake." chuckled Mr. Johnson.

"So what brings you two by?" asked Isaac.

"Well we were in the neighborhood and we overheard some people talking about a certain card shop that was attracting some attention. So I asked them and they told me about a store where they had excellent customer service in which they helped people to understand the concept of dueling and the game. So I figured this place must be popular that I wanted to check it out myself; I thought it might be a good place for you to work with/check out. What I didn't expect was the person to spread such helpful knowledge was you, but I should have expected it. The way they described their experience was similar to how you taught the kids at school and me." Twilight then pulled out her phone and pulled up some of the reviews that people had to say and their star rating. "Safe to say that business is booming for you boys, lots of people are now interested and are willing to stop by."

Isaac and Mr. Johnson were happy that people were talking about them that they were ecstatic. They both gave each other a high five.

"That's awesome, we actually did it, Mr. Johnson."

"Correction, you did it, Isaac. Because of you having a fascinating way of teaching others, they become interested. I haven't experienced this level of success since Duel Monsters first took off and I opened my store." Mr. Johnson then put his hand on Isaac's shoulder. "I'm glad to have hired you."

"Thanks." smiled Isaac.

"Now why don't you leave a bit early, I can finish closing the store." suggested Mr. Johnson.

"Are you sure? I don't mind staying behind to help you." replied Isaac.

"Nonsense, you've done more than enough for me. Now go on, or else your girlfriend will get mad at you." Mr. Johnson then began to push Isaac and Twilight out the door.

"Mr. Johnson, I told you. Twilight's not my girlfriend!" said Isaac as he was now out the door with Twilight and Spike as they were standing next to him.

Mr. Johnson closed the door and had a smile on his face. "Isaac sure is lucky, to have a girl like Twilight by his side. Reminds me of when I found the love of my life." Mr. Johnson was now thinking back to when he first met his wife and how they enjoyed the time they spent together. "Hope he realizes just how good he has it." With that Mr. Johnson then locked the doors and closed his shop as he made his way upstairs and got ready for a good night sleep after a very successful day.
