About Me

Hi, I'm Material Defender, and I write things. I sometimes also like to help other people write things, and I write lots of things so I can get better at writing more things. Practice makes perfect and all that. If you have a question about the stuff I write or writing stuff in general, feel free to send a message my way.

Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me.

All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit.

Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this.

And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.

So here's the dealio: depression isn't fun. When I first heard of a person who had it, I laughed and thought he was being a bit of a ninny. As it turns out, it's something else entirely, and when your life so far has been a veritable trainwreck of bad decisions made by inexperience and apathy, you realize the hooks were already in deep before you truly began to realize what the nature of this affliction is. Change comes slowly, and unfortunately as you try to pick away at your pile of problems,

Sssshhhh.... I think he's trying to lull us into a false sense of security. Any moment now he going to drop out of clouds going "HHAAA!!":pinkiegasp:

sweet Celestia this is starting to get creepy.

I don't know if you'll ever see this, but I wanted to say that you've got a new fan, even after all these years of inactivity. I just finished reading Tiberian Eclipse, and it was an absolute pleasure to read. I hope that things have become better in your life, and that you decide to return to writing one day. Your story is one that deserves to be told, no matter how long it takes.

Please be well, and stay safe.

Even after all this time I still find Tiberian eclipse enjoyable to read. I hope things are getting better for you. I'm Know it's a little late, but happy new year.

Just hang in there. I come from a poor family with alot of crap. My first car was a broken down honda accord 1999 that had been in 4 accidents, the whole dash was shorted, the power steering was gone and the harmonic wheel (pulley system) was broken. It had also been sitting for a year. I repaired it myself and drive it to this day.

Since repairing the honda to a drivable state i had to replace theiator tubing, more oil than you can imagine, alternator, and a sepentine belt.

The car still has a cracked engine mount, a bad timing belt, lots of busted gaskets, tons of electrical issues, glass that ices and condensates on the inside (this is hell in the winter.) a transmission that is about to fail, and all braking system anti-lock safty future failure. Even with all that crap i still call it a good day because before that i was walking.

Now what if i told you that was one of my better days. Really. I was just glad to not be walking. I wont share my worst times but i can say that if you just hang in there and give everything you have it gets better. Eventually people see that in you and help you get to a better place. Just remember that no single decision or event can ever define your life. Only you can define it. Things may delay you but in the end everything you wish to happen will happen. Each small victory leads to another. Take it all on one issue at a time.

Hope you read this. Sincerely, A fan of some of your work.
