It's far more likely that they deleted it themselves, as it's always more likely that someone said something they regret rather than a mod happening to find a comment and needing to delete it.
Personally, I usually have something to say, so I just edit the comment, but some people just do things differently. It is certainly frustrating from an author's perspective, though.
