Because of this, it even left the only pony who can save her, her loved ones, and the empire, powerless against him.

it seems like everyone forgets that sombra got his ass kicked by celestia and luna. and as time has gone on, it became clear that they were younger, and likely not as powerful, back then too.
why wouldn't they just end him themselves? outside of seemingly testing twilight and co to see if they could win without the elements, albeit ti seems celestia had great confidence, sombra would ahve likely just banished the empire once more. not to mention he would probably be frustrating enough an opponent that it would wreck havoc.
in other words if they lsot the heart, the night and day itself would have unleashed themselves upon sombra.
....... depending on your point of view, the crystal heart was simply something he was simply trying to keep away from his enemies. the comics show that the heart is fatally dangerous to him, even touching it injures him. it being returned would shattered him. it is also, thus, well outside of his power to destroy. his very black magic would dissolve at contact.
also confirms that sombra is much weaker than the regal sisters. he said it himself in the comic basically.
I saw quite a few grammatical errors here and there, but overall it seems like a good story. I suggest going back and rereading it just so you can catch those little mistakes. They improve the quality of the story by a lot.
Now that was interesting. I wished I could read more of a fight or how Sombra manipulated Twi's mind. Overall good story.

even without that part, we have indications that the regal sisters were the last resort, and one that would have overhwlmed sombra.

He also has Twilight at his side which would have Celestia hesitate during the fight. And Celestia is also a thousand years old. Her power might have vained with time, especially since she no longer is connected to the elements who served as a power boost.

It's also possible that they used the Elements of Harmony to banish him last time around. I'm not saying it has to be so, just that it's a possibility.
It's also possible that since mastering his shadow form, he's grown too powerful for them to handle. Especially with Twilight at his side.
5974639 they did not use the elements. its pretty much given visually that they did not use the elements of harmony on him. theri blast had no hint or rainbow to it.
and basically he had been sealed away for a thousand years, inactive. luna was allowed to linger a while longer though she was sealed away. however celestia was active for all those years, and fought likely dozens of enemies.
twilight would not tilt the playing field nearly enough. she is still a unicorn, thus limited only to the power of a unicorn. even if sombra is stronger than an individual sister, which may be unlikely, one can hold him off long enough ti disable twilight and rejoin the fray.

5973891 You know, just because Sombra was defeated before doesn't mean that he is stupid enough to be shamed on by being fooled twice. He maybe used a spell which blocked off all communication between Crystal Empire and the rest of Equestria so that not even the Princesses can do anything about it. They have limits too, not like they are invincible (man, talking about Communism!), but again that's just a theory of mine, there are millions of ways to interpret Sombra's victory.
Cora Zone Unicorn you did a pretty darn good job on this piece, pretty much looked at the whole story in the way that MLP creators do not want to show to children. How ignorant and cute they are for not having to see too deeply on what happens if Twilight failed this test, the ending did give a fearing mood though, how zesty your diction and imagery on describing Twilight as the "Queen".
Just to tell you, I added this artwork (yes, including your cover art) to my favorites. The beautiful converse of this beautiful writing is very appealing and attractive!
It was a good first dark story.
No much of a deep plot, but it wasn't what it was going for, I get it.
I really expect you to improve and go for bigger stories.

Nice little dark tale. I would like to believe that while most of the good guys were executed, Rarity was smart and corruptable enough that she preferred to serve the dark couple in the castle and assist them in royal fashion guidelines.

I liked that the only thing Sombra said when Twilight asked what he wanted was, "A Queen.". Nice, straight to the point and don't brag about your grandious, egotistical plans. Sombra is a force to be reckoned with who won't waste time with that - he'll just straight out get the job done.
