Generally speaking, working at the Canterlot City Museum of Science and Natural History is far from the most exciting job in the world. But Maud Pie is fine with that. And on the slow day of the week, she was prepared for a relaxing, low-stress day on duty.

And then Fluttershy came in with a rather pressing emergency.

An entry into the A Thousand Worlds Contest II. Pre-read by The Sleepless Beholder and Dewdrops on the Grass. Very loosely inspired by a true story from Tipper.

Featured on 7/30/23-7/31/23! Now with a reading from StraightToThePoint Studio, and a second reading from Rainbow Infinity Readings!

This was a fun one. Poor Maud, stuck with all those animals. I particularly enjoyed the out of place fawn being present as just a silly kind of double-you-tee-eff moment.

How long did it take you to find 'Clowder' ?

The Big Bang Theory cat episode. Yeah, I saw a lot of that show when I was a kid.

Wow, this story was just hilarious to read, keep up the good work.

A muesum that has only 1 applicant to work in any wing? I am both jealous and horrified

pffffft

Greetings. Your reading has been completed and can be found below. I hope you enjoy.

Not merely an easy day, that is, but the ultimate easy day. As simple as a day working at the Canterlot City Museum of Science and Natural History could get. The kind of day that made most staff wonder what was the point of coming in at all. (It paid, though, so everyone did anyway.)

but those are the best kind of days to come in!

(Much rarer seen was Crystal Prep, which had its own respectable private collection.)

those darn rich kids!

But what made this even more the ultimate easy day was the fact that the curator, Bygone Times, was out with a heavy cold.

that guy must’ve had a weird childhood

It was a phrase she’d gotten in the habit of tuning out. The most important people in her life, after all, could read her perfectly fine, so there seemed little reason to adjust for others. It seemed more like an issue for them.

so true. a skill issue, even

And looking at the desperate, already-pleading face of her schoolmate, one of Pinkie’s close friends who usually smelled faintly of animal dander, as she burst through the doors of the museum, Maud briefly wondered exactly why such overwhelmingly visible emotions were considered such a good thing. It seemed a terrible burden, in all honesty.

aww so Maud. and of course to her the Humane Seven are all just Pinkie’s friends

Fluttershy had only barely notched above the threshold of what generally constituted “regular volume” for speech, though her voice had taken on a somewhat raspy, whisper-shout quality.

aww that is so Fluttershy

Maud happened to know Fluttershy was the only applicant. The likelihood of Sooty Wing remembering she had to hold an interview today was minimal.

ehehe

“It shouldn’t be a problem. There’s a staff room that isn’t used very often.”

well that’s just inviting dramatic irony!

Maud stood staring in the doorway. The fawn trotted up to her and gave her a warm nuzzle. She responded with a firm pat on its head.

that just raises further questions!

At least this might be good for her standup routine.

that’s the spirit! weird life experiences are great fodder for art

great look at a pairing we sadly don’t see very much of, thank you for writing!

to lean back in her seat at the reception table and play an insipid game that poorly approximated the experience of gem mining

Maud has written an entire dissertation on the inaccuracies and misrepresentation of Mr. Driller. To say nothing of Bejeweled.

The story does reach a logical stopping point, but I hope you keep going after the contest is over. There’s potentially a lot more to tell here. The story thus far does put a possibly disproportionate amount of its word count into setup, but the punchline makes for a great mental image. All told, delightful bit of rare character interaction. Thank you for it.

A great thousand-word story.

Being a 1000-word story on purpose, it's obvious you're not going to continue this. A pity, because I can imagine at least two different continuations:

Ending #1: Fluttershy leant her geode to Maud, "in case of emergencies". With the animals threatening to tear apart the room, Maud rather reluctantly put the creepy trinket on--and learned that she could talk to Boulder. After that it no longer really mattered to her what happened to the room.

Ending #2: With the room threatening to fall apart, it's up to the fawn to talk the animals down. Said deer then reveals that she's a spy of the Everfree Deer from the comics, who snuck into the Castle and through the portal to determine if this neighboring world was a possible threat to them or not. Deer magic being so different from pony magic meant that all that happened was that she transformed into a younger deer. She's been stuck here for weeks, since Principal Celestia set up that security camera pointed at the statue. Maud calmly accepts this entire confession and offers to take the deer home that evening, with no other human or pony being the wiser. "I'm a spelunker," she explained, "and I've found all sorts of interesting passages and discoveries deep underground." And then she pulls out the One Ring that had been hanging on a chain under her shirt for illustration.
