Days after her banishment to a new world, Adagio Dazzle stands at the edge of the ocean, hungry. She seeks a morsel not merely of the sea's bounty, but of the power her siren body once wielded, of the knowledge that her days as a dominant force of nature are not yet over.

She has a lot to learn about the human body.

Loved everything about this, especially the digs against Starswirl. That guy's a total douchenozzle.

Oof, wouldn't want to be in their place :twilightoops:

And thus begins Sonata's long love affair with Taco Tuesday.

Perhaps most enraging, though, was the loss of her beloved tail. Well, almost. In what constituted the most egregious case of insult to injury, there was still a bone where the tail should have been. But it was a pitiful remnant, its function improperly and humiliatingly replaced by these overgrown, incompetently-designed fins.

If I had a nickle for every time in the past month I've read a story where a fantasy creature is transformed into a human and takes a moment to lament the loss of their tail... I'd have a clichéd saying.

A bit of a common experience between Sunset and Adagio, yes. That was how I interpreted the “Vibrant Vestigial” part of the Iron Author prompt.

Fair. I mean, don't get me wrong. Opposable thumbs are great, but I'd kill to have a tail.

I had a lot of fun here, from the on point siren infighting, to the casual descriptions of murderous hand to hand combat occurring in the background.

the seaponies had retreated long ago to Mount Aris, and while there were rumors they may have recently returned to the ocean, Adagio had failed to locate their new kingdom

I love the implication that the hippogriffs/seaponies slowly oscillated between land and sea every few centuries, each time fleeing from some cataclysmic threat and waiting for it to die before getting driven back to their old homeland by some new menace on the other side.

The vile flavor spread along every inch of her mouth as she frantically spat and gagged, making another run to the water to gargle it and wash out the scales.

So much urea...

As I noted with the original entry, a fantastic fish-out-of-water story in a very literal sense. Adagio's barely contained wizardmurder bloodfury, her longing memories for better days, and the casually abandoned angry fistfights make for a fantastic alien perspective, and the inevitable outcome of the sirens' attempts to feed doesn't make their dynamic any less fun. Thank you for this, and for bringing it to Fimfic. Congrats again on your honorable mention!

After a few further minutes of feigned deliberation – her compatriots couldn’t be allowed to know that their insistence was what had caused Adagio to finally move – she took a tentative step forward. Then another, then another, then another until she was running towards the surf, making it almost the way there until the filthy overstretched fins managed to cross in front of each other and send her careening onto the sand.

You were saying Adagio? :ajsmug:

Of course, none of them had been able to swim with any efficiency, but Aria and Sonata had managed to get the hang of things enough to make a few catches. Aria had emerged with a few handfuls of herring. Sonata, with triumph in her eyes, carried and laid down a small shark.

Damn, talk about lucky that Sonata caught a shark! :pinkiegasp:

The vile flavor spread along every inch of her mouth as she frantically spat and gagged, making another run to the water to gargle it and wash out the scales. A mild bit of luck came her way, at least, as she managed not to trip all over herself this time. Storming back, she stared in stunned amazement as she found Sonata picking up right where she’d left off, tearing off a chunk of the horrid fish flesh.

She seriously shouldn't have used salt water to wash her mouth out. :duck:

Steam billowed from Adagio’s ears as she watched Sonata nonchalantly resume munching on the shark. Beside her, Aria downed a whole herring in one bite; her face scrunched up violently as it went down her throat, but she managed the feat.

Are those even safe to eat whole? :unsuresweetie:

One hospitalization for food poisoning later, the trio had learned some more important details about the diet of their new forms, apparently named humans.

Saw it coming. :fluttershysad:

She took another bite, the taste satisfactory enough that she almost didn’t stop to envision bringing her jaws down on the wizard instead.

All it takes is a good meal to get over a rough day. Or week. You get my point. :twilightsheepish:

This was a hilarious read. Adafio and crew trying and mostly failing to catch ocean fish made my evening.

Thanks for writing for Iron Author 2023! Yet another example of how we're impressed by the entries we see every year.

They should of just made a fire. Those fish catching skills were out of this world. Someone give aria a lighter

NOOO don't give Aria a lighter😱

11673323
hold on - hang on a second, they've got a point. Do do that actually. it'll be entertaining, I wanna see what happens

life is always WAY more fun with everything on fire, I think Aria really deserves a lighter
