Twilight and Spike lived their childhood in Canterlot Castle under the benevolent eye of Princess Celestia and violent protection of her resident, so called, monster. A monster she returns to to find peace with but also unexpected danger and threats.

This has become one of my favorite stories on this site.
Rarity is surprisingly insightful and level-headed in that first section, she makes some very good sense there. It's not usually something I expect out of her character, with the way she's written as overly dramatic and flighty a lot of the time, but I have to say I liked it.
S'okay, it's not all bad. Now she can slash ship him. Maybe write some lemons. Rarity totally does that when nobody's looking and you know it, too.
You know, on the one hand, I kind of want to see someone choke that old horse until she pops, but on the other hand, I have to say I almost kind of respect how utterly forthright and unabashed she is about her complete loathing for everyone. It's not every day that someone manages to write a character who's so vicious and acerbic that I can really only feel a degree of professional admiration for them.
It's an easy way to get away from any feelings of guilt - not by trying to convince yourself that it was actually right, because you know that it isn't and couldn't make yourself believe it if you tried, but by convincing yourself that you don't care to begin with. I've kinda been there. Of course, I've never murdered anyone, so I suppose it's not quite the same thing.
“War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend.”

Interesting development, and very nice seeing Rarity in this spotlight. Some character development imminent as well?
I saw the authors note reference and I immediately thought The Hobbit.
singing?
Why can't I like/favourite this story multyple times?
Tolkien's time in WW1 really seems to have affected him. Those quotes are a testament for this.
On topic: Raegnar have grenades. What are they made out of? How did he put together the fuse? How did they make the safety pin? That thing needs several kilograms of force to be pulled out, so as to not fall out for every branch, but how did Luna an Raegnar made it so? And you mentioned it looking like a pineapple, so what did they use for the cover/shrapnels? Shaping metal like that is not easy.
I still find your lack of batponies saddening
Mmm another delicious chapter
Lol, Raegdan needs to learn 'the' ropes.
i realise your probably trying to make applejack look profound or wise in her own way,
really she looks self rightous and painfully ignorant, with her 'nip it in the bud' strategy to something like this, she's probably to cause much more harm then good.
So did Luna tell him what she did to twilight?
6942575 Luna has mentioned in a previous chapter that she can shape metal through magic though that weakens it (Raegdan's normally used set of armor is actually made mostly like this unlike the one he wore in this chapter) but they don't mind it for what they need to do. The grenades are basically magic though using tech ideas and method. Luna forms a sheet of metal over which they acid etch runework. The metal is then folded into the shape as needed with similar work for pin and handle. The pin works mostly as a "stopper" that disrupts the runes from activating. Once it is removed the grenade quickly gathers as much magic as possible and explodes in shrapnel or light and sound. Advantages: Since they use magic Raegdan can have them strapped on him anywhere without fear of being activated by someone else or damaged and exploding by a mishit. Also he can hold it as long as needs to without the pin and if he needs to disarm one all he needs to do is touch it. Disadvantage: The explosion is nowhere as powerful as if they used explosive filling or a composite of the two. They don't trust their own stuff that much yet.
Read last comment of mine about batponies oh sad one
6942860 She wasn't being profound or wise. She saw something that she didn't feel was right and wanted to take immediate action. She was just having a tempered moment and blowing off steam by venting to Rarity. If Rarity didn't stop her she'd probably walk over to Twilight's room, have second thoughts before getting there, and turn around and leave Twilight to calm down for a couple of days before trying anything.
6942910 That's what Raegdan hints at the end of the chapter. Heavy words were exchanged, especially from his side, but ultimately he let her off and forgave her. You can probably guess that at this point he doesn't blame Luna for this at all but himself for letting things get like that. Luna blames herself entirely and still wants to try and fix this.

Thank you
More. This shit is the dankest. (I am so sorry)
Favorite part: Raegdan beating some fools. I love how he wrecked that Griffon. +2 to Minions
Fav Character: Applejack. I love how you portray her. She, at least, understands that sometimes you remove those that cause you or your family harm. I can't wait to see what you else you do with her.
Love this story mate. Keep up the amazing work.
Another excellent chapter, it's nice to see Raegdan grow bit by bit.
Has anyone else compared Raegdan to Jack from Madworld? They seem to have a lot in common, even in speech.
That was beautiful.
6943025 I have, so far, read the rulebooks for ADnD, DnD 3rd edition, 3.5, Pathfinder, 4th edition, 5th edition, All Flesh Must Be Eaten, Warhammer 40k 4th and 5th edition, Warhammer Fantasy, GURPS (that one is math hell), World Of Darkness, Warcraft the RPG, DnD Modern, plus a couple more. I've managed so far to score only a few games with DnD 3.5 where I DM'ed, despite my best attempts. I am too scared to love again (who am I kidding, I'll probably be reading the Iron Kingdom rulebooks in the weekend).

*looks at avatar* I NEVER would have guessed!
Simply:
Sentience = Simple mind — Can still feel and be aware though
Sapience = Complex mind — Deep thoughts that can bring significant changes
Truth
Naturally, another fantastic addition to this story, always glad to see another.
6944821 I don't need your sass.
Keep up the good work, buddy!
6943002 Wow, now I feel stupid for asking already answered questions.
Anyway, on a less serious note, will our happy duo finds themselves some new, possibly weird friends? I can actually imagine Discord becoming "that one friend" for them, even if they want to erase him in rather painful ways at first :D
6945542 Yes, shame on you for not scouring every single comment. You disgust me!
Discord huh? Yeah, he will make an appearance and not as a statue though not for quite a long while yet. The one I am trying to decide on, considering your chosen avatar, is Trixie tbh. She is currently looking for work and ways to one up Twilight so maybe the Lunar Guard would suit her needs for some time, especially if she thought she could learn stuff from those two. Raegdan would easily see through her "great and powerful Trixie" act too. Maybe so would she in turn. It would make an interesting choice to put in but I fear it may look as a case of "fixing stuff" or pandering(?). Still, it might make more sense to use her rather than get another OC... ah well, I got time to think of this until then.
6945701 To be honest, Trixie was not really on my list when I asked about friends. Flim and Flam however were. If nothing else, they could be a valuable ally due to the engineering know-how. And since most of the bad things in that episode stemmed from the Apples' needlessly stupid pride, you can't really set Raegdan on them for being evil.
Back to Trixie... she is an illusionist, maybe if the Jolly pair shows her how to effectively sneak with and without magic, she can be exceedingly useful for espionage/counter.
Also, changelings might be useful as well. Or at least let us see Raegnar breaking down Chrissy-Cadence's door, while everyone shuns Twilight.
As we learn more and more about the balances of power within Equestria, Celestia keeps coming off as more and more incompetent.
I know that equestria is not a ponyfied high-medieval/rennaissance europe where everyone is struggling against each other, but Celestia has been in the best possible position for close to 1000 years.
She has universal religious and near-religious reverence from basically every pony, and even has a personality cult (however unwanted) built around her.
I find it hard to believe that Celestia has allowed non-state actors to gather so much power in her borders, and then use that power to subvert her.
If she had the mind of an absolute monarchist, then she'd be the most absolutelest monarch in the history of ever with that position she had.
But we all know that Celestia isn't like that, I can go with that, but what I cannot go with is how Celestia has been almost willfully (or purposefully?) ignorant and neglectful of the balance of power in her kingdom.
I do have faith that you will make this situation believable and Celestia's impotence understandable for us all Crimmar. But until then, WEW.
6945767 I would expect Celestia being good at administration, while Luna was more of the Powerplay specialist. The kingdom was/is a diarchy for a reason. Also, even in the show you can see Celestia making ridicolous choices and basically only luck saves them. Though being a goddess makes you kind of impervious against any major plotting.
I had an idea. Why not have Rarity sew a horsemask for Raegnar, so he can send a message with that instead of a dagger? That way it would be hilarious, as well he could just say it was a prank, and noone can call out on his threat. Maybe put some ketchup under it as well, just for completeness' sake.

Reading 17K words from an ADHD-addled pony is not my preferred method of making me want to kill myself.
6946118 A simple social experiment
Immediately thought of this song:
When Raegdan has his helmet on and in armour, talking all evil n shit, I can't help imagining him sounding like Kylo Ren with his voice changer thing.
You have enraptured me into this world you have made..
I only Wish there quirky and slightly quirky and manic human that was kept secret for his sheer logic and reasoning skills when he isn't boasting about how dark knights are the bomb or how they bring the hammer of justice and also soda. Cause ya know? Its soda.
After so many weeks, I just remembered something. In the armory chapter you mentioned Raegdan's "new" armor being basically all-around better. So what materials were used? Was the old armor made of iron, while the new one from steel? I don't think I've seen this explained.
I'm mostly curious, because Twilight didn't seem to know what material is it and that can help me nail down the ponies' technological level (namely do they have blast furnaces or other ways of mass producing steel-> load bearing of railway->general infrastructure).
6969727 hmmm, let's see... The way I picture it in this is that the world's tech level is somewhere like 19th century though... less in quality, certain innovations not made or thought at all, and in general no important mass production to speak of though the means are there. The reason for that would be magic, the great bypass of thinking (see the episode Slice of Life: Doctor Whooves is working on figuring out how time works, says he almost had it cracked if I remember correctly, and then he is all "There's a spell for it? Meh, screw it then").
Let's take the standard guard armor vs Raegdan's normal and "enhanced" armor. I could talk and talk about this but I won't cause i would be making quite some mistakes in the process since I suppose the characters have a better understanding and practice in this than I do. Just know that ponies streaky, not homogeneous steel, has its faults covered by the use of enchants (simpler, less powerful, but also less fragile magic than runework). Raegdan's normal armor was made with that steel, and with the metal shaped magic that weakened it, and lack of enchants, it is on the whole softer than guard armor though it covers it a little by being thicker. His better armor was made with extreme care, a dash of knowledge of how alloys work, and magic used in the steel making process, not the end product. It's a much more refined, better quality steel with some extra oomph. Make no mistake, almost the whole of their knowledge is taken from ponies, it's just that they did not settle with "good enough, just magic the rest" and had that little bit of edge to make it much better. Also, Raegdan has figured out a simple rule of magic that others have not (and only Luna knows and uses) that made things easier in some part for them to make it. Hint: It's on the prologue.
Also, in story. The tech/manufacture/trade system in Equestria is kind of a clusterduck, widely differing in regions. That's actually a plot point so I'll avoid spoilers.
6970154 Oh, okay. That means train load capacity will be limited (and on the official map it is horribly built out anyway), as I'm pretty sure there isn't enough unicorns to enchant every single track piece. And certainly not strong enough for carrying massive amount of materials at once (compared to those infinite car modern cargo trains). Hmmmm... Also, Ironclads... maaaybeeee. I think they only became feasible with actual high quantity steel production (though Glorie was made before that).....Hmmm.
I'll ask questions like this time to time, and will mention useless stuff as well, so be prepared (Mwahahahaa). Yeah sometimes I might not make sense.
Also, you mentioned 19th century. So should we expect earth ponies and pegasi having some enchanted gun-magic-lance-stuff actung as line infantry and the solar guard are the elite troops in reserve, or everyone was given a pointy stick, sent to train a bit, and then just thrown into the grinder? I would guess the latter considering ponies don't really have a need for military improvements when there is an alicorn protecting them. And from the changeling invasion, I mean seriously, six civilians seemed to do more damage to the swarm than the guards.
That J.R.R. quote made me think of the Deadpool ending...
Now that I think about it, Deadpool and Raegdan have the same-sort of mindless killing spree with a touch of protectiveness mentality. If only Raegdan liked chimichangas...
7289272 Let us not forget that Rae leaves the Fourth Wall be... So, that's two important characteristics he doesn't possess, by our count thus far.
7299834
Don't forget the healing factor.
And raegdans face doesn't look like an avocado had sex with an older, wrinklier avacado. It merely looks like it lost a fight with a wood chipper.
Please be ballroom dancing.
Daaaaaaamn... that mare is a bitch, Honest S-s... S something, ahh screw her.
Nice job!

I understood that reference.
He spoke hesitangly. “I… messed up. Luna told me something and I- I said something in return that I shouldn’t have.

deadpool is in no way mindless. heros fucking piss me off sometimes. letting the bad guy live. OH look. the joker killed 200 people, betta lock him up, oh look he escaped and killed another lot of people.. fuck that noise.. i would happily kill them and not loose a wink of sleep over it. some do not deserve redemption and need to be put down.
8910358
I'm pretty sure that, in the instance of Joker/Batman let's say, the point is not whether the Joker deserves mercy or redemption. The point is that Batman refuses to allow himself to become judge, jury, and executioner. Sure, he could it, there have been occasions where he practically moans over his dreams to snap his neck. He doesn't because... well, what happens to the next guy? The Joker killed that many but Two-Face has killed a lot too, why not. Why not this one, and this one, and this one, and this one... Batman isn't exactly saying that if he started he couldn't stop, but that he is certain that as long as he doesn't poke over the line with Joker then he feels secure enough to continue what he is doing. If the justice system decides to give the Joker another chance or keep him alive, it is not on Batman. If the only way to uphold what is right is by doing wrong, then what is the point of doing right?
Which, by the way, is part of the joke that the Joker sees life as.

Crimmar simply adores the guy; he makes no secret of it, either. If you like Tolkien, I'm sure you'll enjoy this adventure.
"Rarity saw a metallic cylinder bounce once then roll gently towards them. The strange canister had holes carved into it and a weird little button-like protrusion at its…"
Whew, as relieved as I am that's the hardest I have grinned in a while. An excellent use of Chekhov's Gun.
Holy shit is Celestia competence hard in the minus...
Elements of Harmony should have at least one set of Guard with them at all times...
Pretty sure the only reason Celestia rules is because who ever really rules the Nation likes Celestia as a puppet dancing at her strings.
Very lovely end for the lowest of scum. Plus two underlings
