Twilight and Spike lived their childhood in Canterlot Castle under the benevolent eye of Princess Celestia and violent protection of her resident, so called, monster. A monster she returns to to find peace with but also unexpected danger and threats.

Well... fuck. He isn't just a madman hallucinating an evil god, there is something out there that wants him to depopulate entire worlds.
From one angle, if there is some evil will behind this, it is more dangerous. But from another angle, it means that something is responsible, and it has an ass that should be kicked.
Thanos! I'm sure of it.
Or maybe I'm blowing smoke.
Holy shit, there is something out there, that apparently takes people and makes them strong enough, to end worlds. That is terrifying and awesome. But mostly shit your pants scary.
Was this part of Reagadens past.
I have a theory:
First this 'Ender' sends someone/something like the reaper into a world. The reaper's task is to break defences, destroy civilizations, and start apocalypses.
After the world's defences have been lowered and the inhabitants are no longer capable of fighting back, the 'harvest' can begin.
The 'Ender' sends a large amount of Levithans to the world, which is then eaten in a similar matter as in Crimmar's blog post about Charybdis.
Could be wrong though.
Headcanon: The gates brainwash you into being more willing to kill. After enough jumps, you're left willing and able to kill whole worlds. The 'enemy' just tweaks the settings on the gate and occasionally sends Kaiju through, like Pacific Rim, until they're clear of life, then harvest them.
Also, pleasantly surprised that Liam didn't get the Ghost and Roach special.
8155332 I'm betting it's the latter.
8155550 Probably but considering the things that have happened so far(and what we've seen from Raegdan's POV), Raegdan is still in danger of losing himself and becoming a puppet for whatever is pulling the strings.
8155052 8155068 8155219 8155332 8155470 8155600 8156066 8156352
I'm just keeping quiet on this because I think whenever I open my mouth spoilers come out, especially lately. BUT... (damn do I say this or not? I just admitted I'm being spoilerific!) there will be more on Janus and all that. You know,
realmy kind of answers. I'm on the path where I startgiving them out nowbeing a tiny less stringy with them so then we can reach the climax withclearless confused heads.Damn, I wonder if Raegdans old friends are part of Janus?
8156404 Good to hear! I'm not gonna deny it, I was kinda curious as to whether or not I'd have to reread it see, if I could properly understand it... (I don't meant that as a insult)
Sounds like these military people were stumbling on Raegdan's trail for a while.
Janus..it had to be Janus..
8157731
I'm gonna answer that in the story in a way, but there's a hint as to which of the two is true in the picture I drew if you care to look close enough.
Of course it does. It's kind of complicated. Like Leaf stream herself won't shut up about, Raegdan's the reason she no longer has any wings. Then he goes off and is weirded out by the fact that some ponies think she's useless now, a belief she had herself (she did say she tried to reach the a high place and jump). So, she starts berating him, laying it on him at every opportunity. He takes it, sometimes gives a little in turn, but mostly accepts her insults in good nature. When that bomb went off in Sharp Chisel's house he didn't try to cover Twilight alone but keep both of them safe by going for the bomb instead. She hears what he's done, what he's gone through. She keeps insulting him, even hitting him. He shows he cares about them by trying to find Lily's killer. She keeps insulting him.
She's started liking him.
She thinks it's because of being mind controlled. Then she tries to kill him and Raegdan, Raegdan of all people, ignores that other that threatening her a little at the moment. Despite what she tried to do, he confides in her. Heck, he asks for her help.
But she is still angry about her wings. Of course she is, and she believes she should remain angry and hateful about it. On the other hand you can see how she start's palling around with him. She still insults him, still berates him, and she's feeling a bit guilty about that, something she won't admit.
Long story short, she feels obligated to act that way towards him and excuse any act of charity or friendship towards him in any way other that liking him/caring about him. Shit is whack and people are complicated.

Sounds like we're getting into the final act soon.
Well.... Janus was the two-faced god of Doorways, Transitions, and Endings. So... Don't trust the Janus Division.
8158821
Or some other guy.
And thus was the Fifth Beatle revealed to the masses and the most terrible of music was unleashed upon ponykind.
The following Tuesday, they had pancakes.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, ok, so I guess Morgoth wasn't in his head.
8157804
Oh. Oh... OH. YASS
Of course! A civilization that understands the gates! an organization that travels to and monitors other worlds!
I hope they pay a visit to Equestria
This is just too great. Crimnar, this might be my favorite HiE fanfic on this site. Every chapter brings something new and expands on the old.

What is a hero, how do you define them, when are they really a hero? Are they the moment they decide to try? The moment they succeed? If they fail, what are they? If the burden is too much, if the obstacle is too great, if they bend their knee under that impossible weight? Are those who at least had the courage to try and failed villainized, and if so is that right? If you try to stand up to the evil king and fail, if you break under his torture and join his ranks like every other citizen under his rule, are you one of the many victims he has or are you branded a traitor and a villain because you dared to fail? Does even trying to stand up, even for a moment, count for nothing? Something? Everything?
Luna wasn't asked by anyone. She tried anyway. She saw how horrible it was. And that end of the interlude she is still resolved to continue. Even when all it got her so far, in just a few short months, was pain and the taste of the edge of a slow death.
Chapter 10. Closing Doors.
8160387 It's good to hear that but I'd like to make myself clear when I say I wasn't complaining about her as a character, she's annoying, confusing and far too free with her morals but she's still interesting enough that I want to read on and find out why she is those things.
As for Ragedan, I agree that he'll lie, steal, torture and kill to make sure things go his way but whenever he's around Twilight and Spike he seems to at least attempt to be better for them. That alone is very telling to me, that he'd even attempt what he believes is a futile and impossible endeavour because it'd make them happy, not because it'd make his life and continued survival easier (although it probably would) or because some almighty, terrifying demigod told him to but just because he wants to see them smiling.
PS: how long does it take them to realise Twi's new bipolar disorder is due to far too much mind-fucking? I get the feeling that if Ragedan hasn't figured it out yet then he may reconsider his opinion on Luna's choice of action. I can't imaging dear sister reacting much better to be honest.
8160794
How long? Not much at all. In fact they do their best to balance that out their own way, Raegdan acting as best as possible as he can, Luna is ready to adjust her tampering and feeling increasingly guilty for doing it, all that. Raegdan is actually thinking on that on the chapter I am currently writing. His opinion is: He doesn't get what's bad about being mind-controlled. In his books, since there is no lasting damage and especially since Twilight doesn't remember it, it might as well have never happened. Luna's pretty much the same at first, only she gets it by that point and assures him that yes, she should never have done that. He's still not sure, but agrees she knows best.
Of course, as I said plenty of times in the comments, this whole mind control stuff is something that will have the worst consequences possible. We just haven't gotten to that point yet, but it's gonna explode, even if they do their best to remove much of it as possible until then.
Let's do a quick recap/summary here. Raegdan is a mentally broken, sad killer, who at the point now is trying to turn it around.
Luna herself is absolutely terrified of the very Elements that cleansed her of Nightmare Moon(even though I partially understand her fear after they sent her to the moon). Both of these characters found solace in each other, but with disasterous results so far. 1: They both want the Elements destroyed. The very same objects that will bring Discord to the side of good. Annoying in his pranks, but good. They will also be responsible for sealing Tirek away, the very centaur that causes havoc and destroys Twilight's library, but ultimately causes her to become the next Princess in Ponyville with her own castle.
2: (And seriously messed up) They let Pinkie Pie get poisoned, and rather than help her get better, they simply watched without any care. Added in to when the other girls wanted to de-poison her, Raegdan did what he could to stop them, including knocking out Twilight who he swore to protect. This is part of the Element destruction by any means necessary, even going so far as to possibly let them die.
3: Luna has Nightmare Moon traits still in her, as to the fact she was grinning and laughing when Raegdan not only killed a pony in the arena, but made sure a pegasus mare would never fly again. Then later, they both went to her room in the hospital, and basically said if said pegasus suicided, they would laugh at her. Yes, I get it, they were trying to kill him from their commander's orders, but both Luna and Raegdan obviously enjoyed doing the most horrible thing they could to the pegasus. I'm leaning more on AppleJack's and Twilight's side. Luna is forgoing being a Princess, to teach her ponies and Raegdan right from wrong, and instead advocating tantrums and Raegdan's slaughter.
And finally, 4: Twilight's mother. Twilight Velvet is everything she is in all other fanfics and in the show with two vast majorities.
One, she as well enjoys Raegdan being judge/jury/executioner instead of asking the Princess and the law itself(even if they are inept). And two,
being the most shocking and disturbing, she teaches Twilight of the darker side of the world by literally embedding a knife where her daughter's back is. Yes Twilight was protected by the wood chair, but think about it. If her aim had been the least bit off, or if Shining or her husband came in right then and distracted her, where would it really have ended up? And there she is, just smiling as she pantomimes murdering her flesh and blood. A mare, who in the show, and any other fanfics, would only go so far as to bruise offenders, not outright kill them.
My guess? Save for Celestia, the Elements(and bearers), Shining, The Lunar Guards, and Twilight's dad, EVERYONE IS SERIOUSLY INSANELY DEMENTED!!! No wonder Discord hasn't made an appearence. They are causing so much chaos, he's literally in his dimension watching it all.
8161116
Are you sure you haven't only skimmed through the story? Or maybe it's been too long since you read these parts and you don't remember them that well?
1) Yes, they want them gone. They have their reasons for wanting them gone, and believe the Elements are not worth it. No, they don't know what effect the Elements will have in the future. Neither of them is a seer.
2) They didn't let her get poisoned. She did get poisoned, and Raegdan stopped them from casting any spells that would make it worse (it was a panicked situation, Raegdan didn't start off by saying, "no spells, you'll make it worse," but expected them to do as he said. The girls in their panic rushed to protect their friend) while Luna tested for what poison it was. Then they saved her life. They could have sat aside. In fact, they do talk about how easy it would have been to not get involved and end the issue there and then, but by that point they're glad they didn't as Pinkie grew on them.
3) Yes, they are characters who are learned to cruelty and enjoy any victory they can get. Yes, they don't much care for strangers who die. No, they went to the pegasus and told her that if she committed suicide then that meant that she completely lost. They basically told her to live out of spite. They were the only ones who did so, instead of going the sugar way which she would never believe. It worked. And in this story Luna is not the Celestia kind of princess.
4) Twilight Velvet would gladly let loose Raegdan to be judge/jury/executioner against ponies who tried that against her daughter. She didn't teach her the darker side of the world. She simply told her that Raegdan, as well as everyone, isn't invincible. She used her magic to hit the back of Twilight's chair with a short letter opener as to show that even Twilight with her powerful magic could lose to a simple levitation spell (this one was a lesson directed to the reader's as well. Raw power doesn't mean everything, at least not in this story). All that while in a room that they had made sure would have privacy. Also, Shining or her husband aren't there. They're in Baltimare's hospital, not Canterlot. Velvet has never shown any preference to outright murder, except for when she saw with her own eyes what had happened to a certain filly. At this point for her it was a case of digging their own grave.
I'll give you Luna and Raegdan. Twilight Velvet is more of a case of mama bear. Other than them... um... yeah, as you said the rest are fine.
Oh, Discord. Man, I mustn't forget about Discord!
8161211 Ok, I'll agree on a few key points. But you basically just admitted something I don't think you meant to. Raegdan was stopping the girls from using MAGIC to move Pinkie. There-in lies your blunder. Save for their natural Earth-pony and Flight-magic, AJ, Fluttershy, and RD DON'T ACTIVELY use any magic. And Raegdan was knocking them ALL away from helping her when he wasn't watching calmly. Yes Flutters and RD use magic to fly, otherwise their wings won't hold them aloft, and AJ's earth magic helps with growing things. But they only wanted to physically movePinkie, not use magic, and he wouldn't let them do even that. Explain.
8161398
Oh boy. I'm gonna have to post a bit of a large part here.
So basically, Raegdan was keeping everyone away because there was a chance it might poison all of them, including his adopted daughter. He didn't try to move Pinkie himself because he might make it worse. In essence, first they had to assess and then try to help. Could Applejack get her down? Probably, but it wasn't worth it. And the girls didn't try to move her. What Twilight tried to do was cast a general healing spell, and then to teleport Pinkie to the hospital wing. Not a fault of their own, they had no way of knowing, Luna was too busy trying to identify the poison by consuming a sample of it, and Raegdan was at this point barely keeping himself from really hurting them. Point is: They tried to help Pinkie; When Raegdan found a way to get the poison out of her he did so immediately.
eeeh this fells like an flash back by raedgnare when he was randomly walking around or this is something difrent completly and we migth have an small in sight off his friends or so called friend ben doing while they splitt up and left him in the dust.
but keep going this is just geting more intresting
I'm sorry but this chapter barely got read due to the title: Janus.
All I could think of was Kaldor Draigo screaming "I will avenge you, Janus!"
8166113
I don't know how, but thanks to you I just watched a video where a Space Marine's Holy Passage gets violated by two Slaaneshi Daemonettes. This wasn't even the most weird part in all the "what" I just watched.
Anyway, what I mean to say is thanks :D
8173169
while true that doesn't change the fact that if she had just been a bit more mature and planned ahead with Celestia, instead of going off on her own, things would have been different. I get that its part of her character, but she was acting childish in a way I can only describe as "bratty"
All I'm saying is that I don't agree with her way of thinking and that she was acting foolish.
8167145 I have so many questions. I can't decide if actually want the answers to said question...and i've seen some freaky things in my internet adventures.
8173295
The answers, young padawan, are:
Yes, it is exactly what you think.
No, it was not done the way you think.
Yes, holes were puckered tight during watching.
Yes, it is easy to find.
And finally, of course, you know that I loved every second.
I don't think you've seen a lot of freaky stuff during your internet adventures. And to tell the truth, probably neither have I. I don't go searching for them.
Unfortunately though, I have encountered freakier in RL.
Free sample: I once participated in a one-on-one golden shower. The victim was me, the instigator was a full grown, live lion. Enjoy asking how and why.
8174876 To be honest, neither do I most of the time. If anything, the unusual or bizarre has a way of finding me.
Damn! I caught up and now I have to wait
Ok I think I am following so far, but can someone explain to me the whole mind fucking the Mane 6 thing? I read the part about them talking about it but it didn't make much sense to me.
8186332
I'm not really sure what you got confused about, but I will try to explain it here as short as possible. After all it has been quite a few chapters since all this happened. (blocking it for spoilers)
- Luna mind blocked the mane six (at various points) so they wouldn't tell anyone about what Raegdan did to the kidnappers. It was mostly a block to stop them from talking much about it as well as keep hesitating to tell Celestia.
- Shortly after that, and due to the confusion it made in her mind, Twilight referred to Raegdan as monster in front of Luna. Luna then got angry and in her anger decided to give her a sample of what the "monster" has lived through. They got into a fight after that and Luna decided to just eliminate the whole memory. Note that there are still hints that the memory is still there in Twilight's mind, just locked.
- A lot of chapters afterwards Luna starts seeing the mane six as friends and persons rather than simple wielders of the weapon that terrifies her. When Raegdan gets into the fight with Steadfast Ray and Twilight hears too much of the confrontation between Raegdan and Honest Serenade, Luna mind wipes them once more, though she really hates that she has to this time, unlike before.
- Due to inconsistencies of their account and what really happened, Leaf Stream, Cast Iron, Solid Charge, and Eventide, figure out that the mane six have had their minds tampered. They confront Luna, except Leaf Stream who gets a similar account from Raegdan. Luna admits everything except what she did to Twilight when she called Raegdan a monster, as she feels now that this was inexcusable and is too ashamed to confess to it.
- The Lunar guards who know what happened have decided to keep this under wraps as well, especially since due to Luna's and Raegdan's account (which has not been shown and we're nto privy to) it was done for more reasons than covering for Raegdan and will hurt ponies that don't deserve it, as well as feeling hesitant as to just spout out the truth to the main six out of the blue. They decide to wait and in the meantime try to figure something out to minimize the damage to everyone.
And that's it. Let me know if it there's anything else and don't hesitate to PM if you want to be reminded of something or unclear. I know that the story is too large to keep everything in mind, especially since its some time between chapters.
8188109
Thank you, that clears a lot up.
Who are these Janus guys?
This fits. Again, nothing wrong https://youtu.be/Hj2vU2nr5Jw
Edit: did he take out the robots too? I assume so.
Clever... They wipe out entire Earth population and harvest the world for ressources and Technology.
Ruthless and efficent...
8188109
I'm actually super stoked about how you had them find out. many authors (and many commenters here) would have just had them get caught to advance the story. because "Luna and Raegdan bad, and bad must lose"
but nope, you made it feel totally natural. it makes complete sense that after everything going down Luna would slip up and of course Eventide, Leaf Stream and Solid Charge would pick up on it. They were chosen specifically because they are competent.
I'm just so sad it took me this long to find this story. Its awesome.
