This was an awesome chapter. A damn roller coaster ride, but awesome nonetheless. I really liked how you used Fluttershy in this. Her inherent nature got her into trouble, but without that she might not have been able to know how to save Luna. Also her ability to make friends got them a nice big friendly ride. You do like the cliffhangers, though. 😡
You know, I was going to call the current state of the rescue mission the absolute worst-case scenario, but I think this is even worse. I'm genuinely worried about Spike and Applebloom.
Glad to see another great update.
Good one.
I’m confused is she saying that the mountain hey they're climbing is the leviathan or the entirety of the underfree? cause if the former is true, ok yea wow that sucks but if it’s the latter then I completely understand the entire situation down there

Epipotheo is a word of Greek origin: Broken down, epi means "upon, on, or toward," and potheo means "to yearn." To this end, the word can be loosely translated to "to lust; harbor forbidden desire."
Oh crap, that escalated quickly.
9800868
Thanks doc, glad I could get your professional opinion

I wanted to show how she's a veritable badass in her own way while still being the epitome of kindness. She went through the Underfree, carrying wounded, and helped fight off a magic poison enhanced by years of resentment and self-hate, all without anyone to help her. She's the best at what she does, and what she does is very pony.
In my defense, they make for great stopping points.
9800661
This is pretty much spot-on with what I'm going on here. The whole venture went completely sideways. The plan was simple enough, but there's a vast difference in what you plan and what happens.
9800868
You got it about right. The Underfree was there already, probably, but the Leviathan's presence is the key. There will be a few things more on the next chapter about this particular Leviathan. We'll see something we didn't see in Charybdis. Lots of somethings.

The sentiment is greatly appreciated, but no, I don't. I'm not willing to start one if I can't guarantee quantity and schedule along with quality. I don't starve either, so I don't need such help at this point. Also, I get so much help from my editors, it would be hypocritical of me to get all the credit in such a way. I'd much rather that dollar go to someone who needs it, instead. But still, thank you for the thought!
I was just wishing for an update this weekend. Wish granted
Such wonderful cliffs to hang from all over the place, can’t wait for the next one
9801145
The children of the Mountain?
Charybdis might have been about to give birth to its spawn, but Luna and Raegdan hopefully managed to blow it up before it happened.
But now, it seems that Luna and Fluttershy are seeing what's about to come from this new Leviathan.
9800711
hmmmm...
Does that maybe mean we're going to meet Old Squidface, himself, in an upcoming chapter soon???

Fun isn't something one considers when editing fanfiction, but this does put a smile on my face. I'm sure I speak for DrProf as well when I say this. This story is a wonder, and I'm glad to lend a helping hand even if my role is small in the grand scheme of things.
tJust found the update, this is awesome, been waiting for this, keep up the righteous work guys. I get the feeling fluttershy is gonna be the key to beating this leviathan.

*hurried notes*
Yes, that is part of my plan. My very detailed plan. Meticulously all-my-ducks-in-a-row plan.

So will luna ever get her power back?
9804597
Could you please elaborate on that?
9804566
Hmm... Let me put it this way. For the purposes of this story, this is unneeded. Luna regaining her powers will give her nothing of what she requires nor advance her as a character, at least in no way as much as dealing with her "diminished" self.
In another way, yes. But there are no plans for this to happen in this story. If I do make the continuations (which are already semi-written in my noggin) then that will come about in... the third story and finale.
This is one of those in-progress stories I check once a month to see if it's updated, and as imo one of the best stories I've seen here loving it lad
Finally finished rereading the entire story! I look forward to seeing what this leviathan can do!
I hope Leaf Stream is skinned alive.
Echidna? That's all I'm really getting here. It births monsters.
So a Leviathan with a taste for predators and on a quest to create the finest meat he can get I LIKE IT!
Like the search for the perfect piece of meat at the butcher or the super market XD.
Whelp, there are clearly not enough bombs down there to kill this one.
But how in all nine circles of hell will they be able to save the other three at this speed? I think it would have been faster and better to just get a few Pegasus guards and get someone to make a hot air balloon for them to pull.
Also, how does Raegdan anti magic field work? I mean it was said if he got into the Balloon it wouldn't rise because it is magic, but he needs to touch horns or the places where magic gathers like shields or the object that has magic attached to it. to disrupt it for other things. It isn't enough to just touch a pony to stop magic from working, that was the reason why he needed Pinky to drink his blood to help her. Why not just tie a rope to the balloon and he grabs this and gets pulled by featherlyinklined(? was this the word?) so they could travel far over the normal forest?
So will they blow this Leviathan up or will they just give him stomach craps and make it move around?
This story is a drug and I hate to have reached the last chapter already. NOW I AM ON WITHDRAWAL ALREADY

First of, thank you for liking the story. Second, thanks for reminding me about Applejack. I did want to touch upon what your previous comment was going on about, and have her come face to face with the fact that her choice to follow behind wasn't the most well-thought of idea she ever had. I was going to do it in a later stage of where I currently am in the writing, but I realized that, actually, it was a better place to put it in earlier in what I just recently wrote. So thanks for that as well.
Of course, the fault isn't entirely her own. I often try to rarely make it be so. Raegdan knew they were following, after all, and he let them follow deep enough so he could have an excuse to send Luna off with them. Luna was too focused on the Forest before they were even there, so she failed to notice what Raegdan did, and Fluttershy went along with Applejack because doormat. But yes, let's see how this goes.
But I do think that even so, Applejack has shown her own competence. Sure, she might not have Raegdan's or Luna's skills, but she's competent in her own right. Last chapter, she saved Raegdan at least twice. Would he have needed rescue if she hadn't been there? Maybe not. They could have reached the Underfree much faster if Raegdan wasn't delaying so those two wouldn't get lost. But these are what ifs, and we don't know what would have happened then. It could have gone better. Or, it could have gone worse.
This one is vastly different from Charybdis. Remember that they really lucked out with her biology. This one has another function. It's not even certain if the Mountain of Minos works the same as this one. There are a ton of them.
Think of it as an extra layer of skin. I don't imagine it extending any further than a few milimeters ( 1mil = 0.04 of an inch) from him. But it simply turns off or completely erases magic. That's why you see him going for the horn. If he holds his hand on someone, the touch will start stripping off magic, but then you also get a reduced effect because the pony will be replenishing. On passive magic, like when he simply touches a pony who does nothing, it will do nothing. If he touches a Pegasus while flying, especially on the wings, he will disrupt their magic and make them unable to fly. That's why he goes for the horns, it stops them from casting immediately. But it also has the same effect on enchantments or spells. If a balloon uses magic to help it float, having Raegdan on it would be like taking a knife and cutting a line across your computer's motherboard. He won't destroy all of it, but he doesn't need to.
If it is a balloon that can work by real-life physics (and looking at the balloon sizes, it looks like it's not) then what you have is a big bright balloon that would be an excellent target for a rifle. Also, if he used such a thing, the Janus people would know someone's coming and exactly where he's heading. If they saw a balloon heading for where they know the rift to be, they'd turn tail and who knows where they'd go next. They might try another rift, they might try to break through by shooting them all, etc. It's also why he didn't just follow them. Even if he could catch up, if they see him first he's dead, and they're probably on guard. That's why he wanted to go through and end up in front of them.
It's a dozen people with guns. Raegdan has a hammer. His only advantage is that he knows where they were going, and they don't know he knows or that someone who knows is there.

My words may have been a bot harsh, no surprise after a day of work where people think they can tell me how to do my job when they have no fucking idea how things work, but I still stand by them. While I agree with you one some points on others I don't, Applejack choose to endanger herself and her friend I don't think it is Reagdans fault for using her stupidity to try and protect Luna. He may be at fault for slowing down to make sure they wouldn't lose them, another great way for AJ to pay would have been if Luna and Reagdan would have just kept the pace they wanted and left both ponies to die in the Tunnels alone, but I believe naive Twilight would twist it so it would be Reagdans fault again for not risking the two children and Raritys safety just so he could dug AJ out of shit she dived in herself.
I give you this, but only because she got lucky in this doesn't mean it made her decision right. Again one of my biggest gripes with her acting like this would be the fact that she didn't learn from her first party kill, as more or less the only one of the mean 6. If she had trained in combat or so and got better and followed because she thought she was now good enough I would have less a problem with this situation.
On the topic of the big uglys, the Humans talk about thinks like a harvest and such, as if they are harvesting machines, but are they really? Isn't this more like a natural disaster? I have a theory or two but with how I see it two are more likely then the rest if I take Everfree as a new Leviathan in the mix. I don't think they are man made, if they were they wouldn't be on Equis. If there are people advanced enough to make so many different designs it would be easy to control the portals and with this send the cleaners in first and only use the big guns when everything is finished. My reason for this is simple, cost and gain. If they are really there to harvest for someone resources it would be stupid for them to send them before or directly after sending the cleaners. It would be way more efficient to keep them dormant until a planet is cleared and the cleaners have moved mostly on. Then there is no risk or delay, or unintentional lose of cleaners when they got in the way of one of the harvesting machines, and as long as they are dormant the consumption of energy will be minimized. Something that their masters would clearly want as they seem to need raw materials. Also leaving your biggest creations dormant on an inhabited world would risk them being studied and countermeasures being created. Also if someone could create something like Charybdis and the defensive organisms inside it would make also internal countermeasures like multiple doors that close when there is internal damage as well as other defensive mechanisms. Next would be the diversity, why create more then one type of creature per environment or resource? Uniformity makes maintenance and collection of the harvest easier, there is a reason why machines have all rather uniform shapes. It appears to me that they must have evolved naturally to have this wide a range of shapes, forms and behavior. The Question is, do they come all from a world that is filled with this mega Kaiju fauna and flora or are they like single Apexpredators that ate their own world and moved on to look for more food? Also how comes a planet like earth has legends even older then Janus that features creatures uncanny similar to the different Leviathans but is still around?
Anyways, enough for this night from me. Keep going and I hope you can keep your muse and your determination to continue writing for a long time.

That's totally cool. I love harsh criticism as long as it stands on something. As for your thinking so of Applejack, that's reasonable as well. I try to keep a realistic pattern of characters evolving. Some people learn on first try, some people learn after something goes wrong, some people need for the lesson to be repeated, and a lot of people do the same thing again after a while because change is hard. I don't try to defend or keep anyone accountable for everything either. That's why I'm thankful you reminded me of this side of Applejack's development. At the end of the day, each character will think different of each character, and each reader will think different of each character. I don't want to do a... moral proclaiming story by showing one character is always right, be they main six, or Luna, or Celestia, or Raegdan. Everyone fucks up.
I wonder if she would. I don't think so. She's gotten a better idea of how things can go south at the drop of a hat. But even if she did or didn't, you know Raegdan would say it was his.
In the chapter, she says that she followed because she wanted to show they don't throw all responsibility on Raegdan and Luna and wait for good results and to throw the blame if they get bad results, but because she also thought they needed tangible moral support. That was the gist of it.
But was this true? All characters can lie, even if they don't mean to, and we know that even canon Applejack isn't honest all the time.
By the way, I'm admitting that what Applejack did was a dumb thing. That's the point.
I have a quite coherent and good explanation on the whys and hows. It all ties up with many other things, so I'm not going to explain as this would be a tremendous spoiler. One hint is that neither we nor Janus knows everything or even enough. You're getting a really close look at something in the next chapter, so let me know what you think when we see that one roll.
These are all excellent questions. That's the kind of stuff that makes the type of stories I like. Questions like these and the insinuations that you get when you try to align and explain them.
Though I suppose the uniformity part can come from imagining one Leviathan as a shovel, another as a pitchfork, a third as the watering can, etc. To you, these are all tools. Different, but you classify them as such. To someone entirely alien, they would have no idea they are the same. So, imagine Charybdis as a tool that's made to drain water, and another Leviathan as a tool to dig for ore. Perhaps there is another who is used to collect gasses. They are all tools, just as different in how a shovel is from a spade.
Always appreciated! And remember, that I do read the comments, and allow them to sway me. Just because I have a plan, it doesn't mean it's a perfect plan. Plenty of times there have been comments where I went, "oops, gotta address that, dude's right." So keep that harsh criticism going. If you could up it, even, that would be swell :D
i just finished rereading everything, im eagerly awaiting more! i love the way you write character perspectives, its very immersive
I have no idea how to pronounce his name properly. I've been using Reagan this entire time and it's been amazing as a result.

That was me when I first read this story. It's "Reg-den/done/din". At least that's how I say it.
And thanks to you, I drew this! XD

I'm just itching for the slaughter. Hehe...
When will the next chapter come out?
10108790
Sorry for the late delay, but I wanted to make things certain.
I am currently at 18k words of what will become a two-chapter for better digestion (in all probability). I still haven't finished, but I am VERY near the end. Mr-Dr-Prof Sweetness has been quite insistent on bringing the whip upon my back and forcing me to write in a rush in order to continue along and ignore the trepidation that made me rewrite the latter half of the chapter over and over. He has gone full Simon Belmont on me, and I'm as grateful as I am in pain. I'm feeling confident that I will finish the chapter sometime this week. After that, it will probably take a week of editing (which really depends on my editors), and so I don't think more than two weeks. If need be, I'll post the first half when it's done while we edit the latter half rather than do the thing I usually do where I throw up all the chapters I have written at once.

Sounds good. Can't wait.

You're a fast boy, you can handle the overwhelming pressure and expectations.

Did you ever see that scene in the Matrix where Neo dodges a hail of bullets in slow mo? Neo is me and the bullets are my responsibilities.
Ay baybee. When you gon' drop that chapter so I can finally use these party poppers n' bring out the good champagne?

Dropped!
