Twilight and Spike lived their childhood in Canterlot Castle under the benevolent eye of Princess Celestia and violent protection of her resident, so called, monster. A monster she returns to to find peace with but also unexpected danger and threats.

Well, that was quick!
My only regret was that I did not check fimfiction for an update an hour ago. As always an excelent chapter but as I read a shit ton of fimfiction and different variations exist on Luna ans Nightmare Moon I have to ask. Have you stated whether not not they are two separate entities or the same?

The only stuff that has been mentioned in a couple of occasions is that everyone knows she found, summoned, and let a demon take her over.
Poor Luna. If she hadn't been so strong, if she had broken down earlier she probably would have been much better off.
Thank you for being a wonderful oasis in a desert of "Blame Celestia" and "It's Celestia's fault" and other apologist type stories that try to minimize/rationalize her actions away.
It's nice to see a story that show that Celestia is caring and tried to help her sister.
Thanks, couldn't remember if it was mentioned. On another note it does not look like quoting works on mobile.
Spoilering this in case there's something I'm missing: What's the reason for the on & off italics? Was there a formatting glitch or is there some element to the story I'm missing?

It's more a visual display of Luna's corrupted conscience. There are fragments of her voice and the burgeoning Nightmare in those thoughts.

She also would have been better off if she wasn't so damn stubborn. Raegdan's moral failings and harsh actions come from necessity, not choice. He's made a number of decisions purely out of spite and apathy, but if given an alternative (The Twilight Years), he takes it. Luna, on the other hand, is offered an out, yet she still maintains that she must help those who, while not better off without it, clearly don't want the assistance she provides.

This is how you should be, it coos. This is who you should—
Read that line again.
8241932 That makes sense, thanks!

Thanks. I'm of the opinion that people are too easily throwing blame at her when they have a much wider and in-depth view than her, live in a much higher advanced society, and have the advantage of hindsight.

it's meant to visually imply that Luna is cracking

It's what I think is a large part of the tragedy in her. If she had been less stubborn, strong-willed, or selfish, she would have been better off. But she is not.

Oh, that's a relief! I had thought you were pulling something like Monochromatic did with his/her story where that sort of thing would likely be a key for some encrypted message!

It seems to me that she's still feeling quite guilty over the first couple she couldn't save, and all the ones that died since.
I do hope she breaks down and spills her guts to Celestia. I wonder if another couple of assassination attempts are going to come now that the pair of them are badly injured again.

Well, that was prett obvious. You can be stubborn, but how many people are stubborn against such adversity for the sake of being stubborn and not because something drives them? There are more than one reasons that make Luna or Raegdan what they are. In fact, I intend at one chapter to show one reason for why Celestia is the way she is. That's for the final arc though.
Luna is beyond insane because she chose to ruine herself...
