Hahahahahahaha! I don't know why that made me laugh for such a dark story but I love references (If I could find them that is )
Great chapter, this new enemy seems really interesting.
Also, call me crazy but I swear I have some kind of Crimmar sense. The past 5 chapters of this story have updated the day after I think about the story. I laid in bed last night and the thought popped into my head 'Oh, The Lunar Guardsman is probably due an update soon', and lo and behold, it updates the next day. This has happened 5 times...
Anyway I'm rambling, like I said it's a good chapter, I always love Leaf Stream's sections, could it be her heart is finally starting to warm back up a little?

That's just my psychic enslaving net working. It means you get encompassed enough in the words that you get captur- become one in our fine slav- intellectual hiv- collecti- fellowship. Just give in to the warm, moist feeling.
Maybe Leaf Stream's getting tired of being a jerk. I mean, it's about time she finally becomes a happy-go-lucky pony as well, isn't it?
The more I read this, the more I want to see Leaf Stream get beaten.
8138645 ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOCRIMMAR. And you're right, it's never too late to be happy...
8138667 *downvotes internally*
8138667
Well, the point is that she is a jerk, reasons notwithstanding. It's about time she did get a punch or something for the things she says actually, so you are not far off the mark. It will help her grow, she's getting pretty stale. Hmm...
IS THAT THE FUCKING FLOOD?!
Sweet fucking jesus that sounds like the flood. Here's hoping Luna gets out alive and in (mostly) one piece.
oh shit, do we need to activate the Halo rings?
Sounds like our Lunar Guard found themselves some kind of Mudman/Shambling Mound hybrid.
Holy unicorn frappe, dude my oc steel edge finally, but is he gonna come back to life, oh btw oc prefers a long sword.
Sweet chapter by the way keep it up.

It was at this moment Stalwart questioned his stance of being straight ha.
8138685
The more I read this the more I want to ship Leaf Stream and Raegdan. There must be an aversion fling... >_>;
8138638
Please think about Crimmar A LOT more often then
Every time I see Snared Wish and Shaded Swirl mentioned:

I only ever played the very first one. Sometimes, in my deepest dreams, I still go through that damned tower, doing the same level again, and again, and again, as I climb it up in one of the lamest design choices ever...
This ain't the flood. Ironically, it's a lot more wet :D
And this story had enough rings already, thank you.
8139682
It was at this moment Stalwart questioned Raegdan's stance of being straight.
8139994
And number one in the top 10 of "things to say that will give Leaf Stream a stroke..."
8140252
Yeah, sure. That won't be weird at all. Why not? Heck, I'll give him pictures if he wants. All he has to do is pm me on whether he prefers frontal or back.
8140264
And number 1 and 2 of "things to write that give Vwyx a stroke..."
8140294
Why not both?
8140294
Start keeping track of that and you'll have a very long list indeed, since it happens basically whenever Raegdan or Luna make a poor decision.
In, like, a good way, though.
8140294 Not the tower...
intresting enemy an creatsure allmost like an elemental but an difrent kind it cunsom it's prey take use off it's cappability and use it as it own but taken that it is made off mud it won't be abel to fly un les it can as far we know this is an unknown
NICE!
it seems the Lunar Guards has a job to do now, besides hunting the odd timberwolf pack and errant manticore.
Oh, and since it just popped into my head incredibly randomly (grinding out your skills in Skyrim will lead your mind down strange paths) I'm calling it now: hero boy is about to die. That or fail to save someone.
Shape-shifting Shambling Mound / Gelatinous Cube monster... that's horribly nasty.
Based on this and other monsters Luna has described eradicating or at least culling, HOW THE HELL HAS EQUESTRIA SURVIVED WITHOUT HER for the 1,000 years she was gone? Seriously! Towns bordering wild areas should be losing ponies on a regular basis, and traveler disappearances should practically happen more often than them getting to their destinations.
We know the Thestral Clans did their best to try to pick up the slack in her absence, but how does the Government and general populace in cities like Canterlot not know about the amount of death waiting for them outside?
We know Applejack knows. She's mentioned the monsters she has to avoid to make deliveries. So rural ponies know about the crap around them.
I'm actually hoping that the self-righteous Celestia worshiping fanatics of the Solar Guard have been doing something about this problem, though I wouldn't bet on it. I'm leaning towards them being ignorant of most of the horrible monstrosities that regularly prey on common ponies, but seeing as how that stuff doesn't come near Celestia they just wouldn't care anyway.
Bare minimum, the Royal Guard should know all about this kind of thing.
UGH! Equestria seems more and more like living in a room with a box of sudden death whose deadly contents are only held at bay by thin wrapping paper. Sooner or later the paper is gonna rip and the populace that survives will have had a MAJOR wake up call.
8140776
I bet they are feeling wonderful about finally having something to do.
8140920
Ok, which one of these is an evil smile emoticon? Or mysterious one at least? Is it Celestia? is that it?
Nope, that ain't it.
8141247
Well, the train is responsible for a lot of these problems fading away. I think Applejack actually mentioned that. Deciding to walk instead is a gamble, especially if you're on your own or a small group. So, the ponies out of towns, who are forced to travel with whatever means they have, they know what's up.
As for how they still survive? The Thestrals were taking down most of the things that were really dangerous, like the current one if it appeared. Apart from them, while the Royal Guard is basically a joke as far as this goes, especially the city ones (it's like setting police or militia to fight against Xenomorphs or something) as they are more suited and used to other stuff, there are others in their ranks who know what they are doing. Stampede and Short Order are two old ponies, but have seen a lot of stuff. It's just that these guys usually don't stick around main cities. It's kind of a shell-shock thing. It looks fake to them.
Apart from them, yes, the Solar Guard IS actually doing enough, but not near enough. They rely on the Royal Guard to take care of what they term "small stuff" when even this small stuff is out of the majority of the Royal Guard's league. What the guards do on most of these cases is simply avoid or take everyone out of the way, and wait out the danger. Complacency. They didn't use to be like that. They have gotten too self-important lately.
The rest? The answer is simple. The mane six. Not them exactly, but there are others like them around. Not everyone is willing to twirl their hooves and wait off the danger or wait and see if someone gone for too long will return on their own. Just because Raegdan believes they all die off, doesn't mean they do. Some succeed enough. Some more than enough.
In such a world you either break or struggle and survive. If ponies survive, then that means one of two things. Either they are extraordinarily lucky... Or they are made of sterner stuff than we give them credit for.
However, one solid push can really make things bad. It's obvious. It's how it is in cannon as well. The cannon equestria is filled with monsters to the brim, and all it takes is one willing villain to really end the day.
8142714
Let me see... Chapter 11? Chapter 11? Oh man. Uh... Well, it's your choice, man. It's your choice.
On an unrelated note, I wonder how many have caught on what the appearance of the forest gunk means?
8143236
A Celestia is fine, too. And I'm going with hornless unicorn woman if it's someone else that dies. I think that's the one that would hurt him the most.
As for the monster, I just assumed its appearance meant that whatever the creature is, when it/the forest thinks "monster", it/the forest thinks "Raegdan".
Were do you come up with the ideas for these monsters?
You left is on a cliffhanger too. I hope the Lunar Guard will manage to defeat the creature with magic, seeing that physical attacks seem uneffective.
They might need Hans.

Good work as usual. Can't wait for more.
EDIT:
Oh, could you please write us a story about the forest muck as you did in your blog post with Charybdis? Please please please :3 ?
8143236
I was actually just about to mention that. The creature seems to take on the shape of what it eats, so it having a 'Raegdan shape' means it's eaten other humans who ended up in Equestria through the Gate, right? I just hope it wasn't any of Raegdan's former friends; I've been wanting them to see him alive after all this time.
8144943
Either through long deliberation, like Charybdis and this one (Charybdis I was thinking of for weeks), or flash of insight, like the drones inside Charybdis. It's pretty much the same process as with the story. I come up with an element, and then ask what ifs.
A story about the forest muck? Hmm... I guess I could do something about it. It would have to come a little later though, as it would involve the depths of the Everfree, and I gotta figure out when is the best moment to reveal or hint some things about it. But yeah, that seems possible. I think there's an idea rankling in my noggin' already.
8145002
Got it. I'm using the Forest Gunk as a means to hint at something else as well that will be revealed fully later on, so no need to rankle your heads, but I mostly do it so that when it happens it won't be seemingly out of the blue and completely unexpected. Oh, and Raegdan's friends... Oh, how much I await for this moment.
8145002
Luna also said that this particular muck was more cunning and intelligent than the others. If this one was the only one to have eaten a human, is it possible that the muck absorbs the intellect of a creature as well as it's mass?
Sounds like a critter from Dwarf Fortress.
8146162
I am glad to say that I didn't steal any of that, for the simple reason I've never read that fic.
What worries is me is something else. Read the latest chapter when you can.
So, here's a nice, little story. When I decided I needed a monster for this latest mini-arcI had to come up with something. So, I talked it over discord with Mr-Dr-Prof Sweetness (which means I have a witness, YEAH!) and asked him if he had any ideas, something to start with. He said, "what about something like this?" and links me a picture of some swamp monster. I wasn't too hot on the idea at first, but a few changes on what exactly it is, how it works, and presto. My monster was done. I write this chapter where it appears in. He looks it over. Everything is perfect!
Then I come in to make the chapter. I'm on the TLG page... and I glance to the right, at the tab that says "Also Liked". First entry. I read the description. I check the cover.
"FCK!!!"
That was in no way intentional, I swear to god!
8145816
It seems to lose it's form every time it eats something new.
If that's the case, it may very well lose EVERY aspect it absorbed from it's past victims (keeping only it's increased mass after each meal), including the human-like intellect.
The only thing that may be equally as bad is an alicorn-muck monster.
I am about to feel REALLY old, but...
All I can think of now is the old smooze from back in the days of G1
8146179 Haha, I wondered if this was a nod to Evergreen Heart or Swamp Thing in general. Even Lupine Tree has a similar creature.
Also, if the thing takes the shape of what it eats, then it must have eaten humans before, meaning that there were humans around pre-Nightmare. They were just living in the Everfree. Interesting.
Limit Breaker is a delusional pony.
8156098 He is right in a way though. The hero always wins, because if they fail they aren't a hero anyway. Hero status is earned upon success.
If that thing takes the form of whatever it consumes, why did it take a humanoid shape? And why does it remind me so much of The Thing?
Is it possible that another human happened upon a rift 1000 years prior and was simply teleported into the waiting maw of a mud monster before it went dormant? Or did Raegdan stir it from its rest when he and Luna were hunting in the Everfree themselves before the formation of the Lunar Guard?
Also, the cognitive dissonance within Leaf Stream's mind swells with every chapter; she berates Raegdan at every turn only to interiorly concern herself with his well-being.
8157731
Because the last thing it ate 1000 years ago was James Arnes.
Timber solve scene reminded me of this video

Though it maybe wasn't luna
first thing that popped into head was the faceless from xcom 2
"I believe that Eyr weeps at what we have created, while Maar cackles at our foolishness"
They can't get a fucking break at all do they?
