Yeah I kinda figured this would happen
I did not expect this to end any different, but still..
:(
In a time far later, a journal lay open in Officer's Quarters in the Canterlot Palace.
In the months following my Commission into the newly reformed ranks of the Night Guard, I guess I saw a lot of my teenage self in Her Highness. Scared, Afraid, Alone, Confused. Afraid to approach anypony but desperate for contact. Of course, one does not simply trot up to she who can raise and lower the moon and say "Let's be friends"
Unless of course you are that friend of Shinybritches' Personal Student, but the rumor mill says the Solar Guard had her on a terror watch list before she ever was a national hero. Certainly the Magic Boffins wanted to know how an Earth Pony was able to hide a Cannon in her mane...
Nevertheless, as the months wore on, she started feeling more comfortable around us, and began to open up to her guard, even asking me about my own childhood, offering a story from her own, and the time of the Wendigos, and the war before their coming. And she told me one simple truth I tell the troops under me any time they get a mind for glory.
"War Doesn't Tell Who is Right. It Only Tells Us Who Is Left"
Journal, Lieutenant Harmony Muse, Night Guard
Sub Lunae Luminae
Looks like Celestia's future sight is coming in.
My current impression of Celestia's motives;
She realized over time that her future sight is a real thing. But, as with many other things, doesn't tell Luna. As a result, she interprets her visions alone, with the limited perspective of a single pony. So she never quite notices the implications when her visions seem to come true as a result of actions she takes in response to the visions.
She suspects that her vision at the fall of Ùllahdmaiden could have been one of the future, but it just doesn't fit with the Luna she knows. One more reason she feels justified in hiding it.
Time passes. Celestia's visions keep coming true. After Sombra, Luna's overall mood goes down. She becomes more distant. Soon, the nobles are openly afraid of Luna, and Luna doesn't seem to care what they think, often acting against their wishes.
Then she assembles a personal army which answers directly to her.
Is this it? Is that vision, so long ago now, finally coming true? It's too big a risk. Celestia takes what she believes to be appropriate preventative measures, disbanding Luna's army under the excuse of appeasing the nobles. She's oblivious to how angry this makes Luna because she's already resigned to Luna betraying her.
She finds Luna shortly afterwards, verbally tearing into a terrified noble. This can't go on. Celestia invokes a law which allows her to strip Luna of her crown. Luna goes ballistic, forcing the moon into the sky, blocking Celestia from her source of strength. She undergoes a transformation into a darker parody of herself. The Dark Luna from the vision. This is it. Of course, Sombra must have done something! It was never actually Luna, she'd never fight Celestia!
They fight. Luna almost wins, but Celestia manages to reach the Elements of Harmony. The perfect thing to save Luna, she thinks. She uses the Elements, but something goes wrong. The Elements object to being used against Luna, and Celestia suffers backlash. She can't spare the precious moments to consider the implications; the Elements have failed, are therefore useless, so she severs her connection to them to power a spell which will send Luna to the moon.
As she watches Luna veer away from the moon, and into the void of space, Celestia's heart sinks into Tartarus as she puts together what just happened.
The Elements of Harmony refused to affect Luna. They hurt Celestia instead. Why? Luna was possessed, right? The Elements should've wanted to free their other bearer! Unless...
Unless she wasn't possessed. Unless Celestia was using the Elements of Harmony to win a fight with her actual sister. Unless Luna's bitterness and rage had a logical explanation...
It all comes flooding back. Every time Luna complained about the nobles, and Celestia brushed it off as hyperbole or a misunderstanding. Every time Celestia admonished Luna for preparing for war instead of pushing for peace. Every time Celestia followed the advice of the nobles over Luna's objections.
The time she took away Luna's crown, because she assumed Luna was preparing to betray her.
It hits Celestia all at once.
She betrayed Luna.
She just threw Luna to certain death on a suspicion.
She's a monster.

I wouldn't say this justify's her actions in this story, but it definitely helps explain them.
Hmm, even when the world around them freezes, the tribes probably would've fought for the ice.

While I don't agree on just how quickly Tia may have realized that it was her who betrayed Luna after some time, feeling more like it was that slow, ever-present, lingering fear in the back of her mind, crushing her one investigation after another into the elements, Luna, and what led to that happening until she could not bear hiding it from herself alongside the despair of losing her sister, and last remaining family for her betrayal.
The rest I'll wholeheartedly agree with, though what I'm more interested in now is the aftermath. There is no way Luna didn't touch or truly help the minorities of Equestria, such as her personal army. I'd expect that the absolute very least a state of uneasiness coming from the batpones, at worse revolution. That perhaps hidden under the celebration at 'Luna's' destruction, in the dark Celestia had made many enemies who weren't as merciful as the masses.
And not to mention the geopolitical state, they were recently at war with the Griffins no? And with Equestria's only competent general gone, the only one who did what had to be done... Not to mention what power the nobles would have now that Luna was gone, without her in their way... While Equestria may still have Celestia, it just lost those seemingly unimportant, crucial cogs that kept it running.

when luna escaped capture she did describe how some of celestias ponys where armord in weird armor. and we both know a change in armor from when luna was there means there was likely a new threat that needed a new type of armor. This could mean there was a attack of oppertunity from a enemy or a civil war.
Something i also want to note is that i dont think luna mentions seeing any of the bat ponies in celestias guards outside the facility so it might be possible they split from equestria completly as this seems the type of mission they would have volentered for if celestia was on good terms with them.
11793874
This is actually the assumption I took when I wrote the original Harmony Muse stories. as Harmony herself is a basic Pegasus.
11793874
Possibly, but from what I remember, it was more akin to modern military armor, so I took it in as just the advancements of 1000 years. More of the actual bones of the military, while the gold and glamour are the face of it. But, if indeed Equestria had split from some kind of revolution, some kind of token volunteer force would make sense after enough time that Celestia could've mended together some form of diplomatic relations.

im more thinking on it from the stand point that since we know what things are like in the show we can see the diffrences and make guessess with what we know as to the cause.
From what we know in the show luna was isolated and that and her underappreceatedness lead to her nightmare moon transformation. But in this story it seems that luna was quite well liked by some of her ponies and likely has drank and made merry with some of them after battles and stuff. So them buying into the whole "my sister was kidnapped" thing would be unlikely and because of both the lack of celestia finding her things might have got bad. Also if i rememeber correctly luna getting banished happend shortly after her blowing up at a noble in front of witnessess. So imagine what those nobles said about her after that? "Celestia finaly got rid of that evil mare" something like that? And the bat ponies and others would hear these two diffrent storys and be forced to decide which one is more likely with that they know?
is the castel guard careless enough it canot stop someone capturing and taking a princess? Would luna be captured so easy? Why would this happen after celestia disbanded lunas army?
If i was a bat pony there i would be very suspisious of celestia after that

Hmm, that does potentially tie into the whole potential revolution idea quite nicely... But Tia is also quite immortal, and could've ordered history be scrubbed over time. If she went to blatantly lie immediately after the whole even, then of course nopony would buy it. But over the course of years and time, she could slowly mend together history in the way she wanted it to be.
That is, of course, if she can prevent revolution in the first place. However, that does present the possibility that if they batpones formed their own separate nation, that they both have their different versions of history, and Sunset was fed the Equestrian version. There was some clear tensions between the "neo-guards" as Luna described them, so perhaps due to their different versions of history, while they may have peace the diplomatic relations are strange between the two nations.
So to put it, after Luna's banishment, there was either a revolution or some kind of separation between Equestria and the batponies which left both with heavy tensions between the two. Though with the conflict heavy in their minds, they could've come to a tentative peace, the batponies having the quality military while Equestria had the numbers.
Due to their dislike of Celestia, and her altering of history, such relationships continue to be strange for hundreds of years, leading us up to here where despite still being diplomatically stranged they offered a small volunteer force when Celestia brought up Luna, or whatever Celestia might've said or promised them.

We do need to factor in the nobles in this as unlike in the show where luna and celestia met in the throne room and had a brief fight this one started with a set up by nobles to make luna angry. and since these nobles have the stupidity to anger their princess im gonna assume that these same nobles had the stupidity to also watch the fight and spread the word the way they see it before celestia could.
Currently im hoping for luna to talk to one of the neo guards soon just so we can get both sides as even if the bat ponies dident split from equestira its likely that they have a diffrent view on what happend passed down
11793934
I mean, after such an event... Once all is said and done, I don't think Celestia's going to be very pleased with the nobles... But yeah, we can only go so far with limited information.
Looks likes next chapter will be in present time, I can't wait!
11793942
yea. for all we know the neo guards could just be a change that happend like discord dabbing when getting stoned and lunas banishment. It is nice that there are enough things to be able to speculate with thou. look forward to the next chapter

11793756
Predictable perhaps... But it's still a punch to the gut when it happens.
11793771
Oh intresting! If it can be canon remains to be seen.

Ice is a valuable commodity in ancient times! In fact in Northern Europe, there was a whole industry devoted to harvesting ice to keep food, and supply air conditioning for the wealthy!
11793945
Are you sure about that?
