I love his/her single action in just one line at the end of the chapter. I wonder what will happen because of it?
If I'm reading things correctly, the Nightmare has been subtly manipulating Luna from the beginning, all to force her into a situation where she has to choose between becoming the worst version of herself which she fears more than anything else, or letting go of all the injustice she's been subjected to.
This would be an impossible choice for Luna. She knows that if she decided to stand for justice, she'd win, but she'd risk becoming the greatest monster in the universe in doing so. But stamping out injustice is a core part of her identity; if she gives in, she might as well slit her own throat.
Given that last line, I want to think she's decided that she'll keep fighting, because despite what others think of her, even Celestia, she knows how to show mercy. She can fight for her justice without becoming the monster she's expected to be.
Demon fight!

That seems absolutely wild to me, but it did indeed fit pretty well.
Fiendbane
Thanks for that. So anyway. Nightmare thinks Luna is special. Because she only fears herself. The Nightmare's plan was to use being in Luna's mind to implant that fear by manipulating her into being bloodthirsty and cruel. Which is important to Nightmare for some reason, I guess?
Apparently we were supposed to interpret Luna historically having an accurate assessment of her capabilities as an indicator that she doesn't feel fear. And last chapter wasn't supposed to be mourning Luna, but legit just some emo catharsis that somehow clarified in Lucas's mind ... whatever the heck this was.
What am I supposed to take from all this? Nightmare is trying to goad Lucas into admitting her fear. Does inspiring fear in yourself give nightmares an infinite money glitch? Does the Nightmare want Lucas to "give in to the dark side" and kill everybody? Seems counterproductive actually. How the heck do demons work? Moonlight hurts lesser ones. Is Nightmare immune? Or just really stupid for climbing into that skull. What is with Pink Text? Where'd that come from? Why is any of this happening? Are the answers to my questions things that were explained 100 chapters ago that I forgot about or is this all being pulled out of somepony's plot?
Despite two chapters ostensibly trying to explain what's going on, I am in fact, still confused and frustrated about what's going on.

I was sorta confused at the end of that chapter but youve cleared stuff up. I just had to take a couple of steps back to see everything i was missing.
I'm hoping to see something like this at some point.
Celestia had thought of many things Luna might say or do to her after all that had happened. Yet Luna still managed to catch her off guard.
"Congratulations, traitor. You got away with it."
Celestia knew her sister saw her as a traitor. It was true, after all. She had expected several possibilities, from forgiveness (unlikely) to that accursed prophecy finally coming true (far more likely now than it was back then). But this wasn't among them.
"I... w-what?" Celestia stammered. "B-but I was going to-"
"You were going to drag me back to Equestria and do everything you could think of to appease me, as though I were an angry beast. But you wouldn't ever have allowed the public to learn the truth behind my disappearance. You wouldn't stand trial for treason and regicide. You wouldn't give up your crown."
Celestia's feels her heart tie itself in a knot. That is indeed more or less what she was intending. It made sense before! If somepony is hurt by something you did, you make it up to them, cheer them up, show them Kindness so they can be happy again! But Luna describes it as though such an act would be insulting!
And of course she can't tell the public the truth! It would destroy them to learn what she really did, not just because they idolize her, but because they'd think their country is built on the back of such a massive betrayal. Surely she can get Luna to understand that?
"That you didn't immediately deny it is answer enough," Luna says after a moment. "And of course I realize that the answer might have been different if your positive image weren't so central to Equestrian society."
It's at this point Celestia realizes that Luna knows full well why Celestia won't reveal the truth. But before Celestia can say anything to try and placate her, Luna continues talking.
"I could continue trying to bring you to justice by force. I'm fairly certain I'd eventually succeed, too. But now I realize that the cost would be too great. And I don't just mean your precious cult of personality. No, I'd have to dedicate too much of myself to the task. I would become a monster in the process. And not only would that vindicate you..."
Celestia doesn't dare even breathe as Luna pauses to look her in the eyes.
"To be Honest," Luna continues, "you aren't worth it. So congratulations. You've escaped the consequences of your actions. You commited some of the worst crimes any creature can commit and got away with it all. Goodbye."
Luna starts to walk away. Celestia doesn't move to stop her, as she realizes with creeping horror that her guilt will never go away.

You overlooked the fact that Celsetia have worked 900 years and somehow crossed the galaxy to find Luna in order to have a chance at forgiveness. I understand that that is a good ending to the drama, but according to her own character, being rejected, wounded or ignored would not stop Celestia from continuing to seek forgiveness.
Like a stupid cycle, they would keep colliding.

What happens is that Luna finds herself in a moral dilemma. Her life can be summarized like this: Luna/Lucas/MC is currently being beaten up by a bunch of bullies who enjoy beating her up. After witnessing not a single ounce of remorse for the misery they have caused her, she both hates them and realizes that nothing or no one is going to stop them from doing their evil deed, so she has to do it herself. To do it herself, she realized, she would have to fight without mercy, for if she hesitated even for a moment, they would run away and bring reinforcements with them. But if she starts fighting without mercy, she will never stop fighting, and that is also a condition she doesn't want to be stuck at.
She feels no fear because her hatred for her tormentors is so great that it completely drowns out her fear. The nightmare wants her to lash out and become the monster she fears she could be.. Understand?
So, she is stuck in a moral limbo. If she chooses to show them mercy because she needs to be the better mare/man, this doesn't mean that the bullies will stop, in fact they proved her a moment later that her attitude is inviting more abuse. If she stops them, she will stop them forever, and as violence begets more violence, anyone who wants to put her down will try to do so.
Luna wants to stop suffering, but she is forced to choose between her moral integrity and her physical integrity.
Sooner or later she will have to make a choice because her situation is untenable. Should she choose to be the better man/mare, she will stubbornly stick to her moral principles and possibly be killed by a less moral tyrant who will not regret her demise. Or she could choose to lash out at her oppressors with fire and hate until she or they are dead, either of which would mean the end of her suffering anyway.
Personally, I don't mind following a moral principle, but there are no straight lines in nature. It is foolish to follow a straight moral principle to the death, it could lead you to spare your enemies and only invite them to hurt you. In life you will find enemies, that's inevitable. To live a life without too much suffering is to set your own boundaries and draw your own lines in the sand.
Case in point: how much do you want to bet that the sniper who clipped off her wing was actually aiming for her head? She had to choose, or sooner or later a bullet would do it for her.
Well this seems great moment for Lucna to redefine her being ...
She can't go the Luna way since she now has new perspective as human and this revelation from Nightmare might be final push
She can't go Lucas way since Lucas didn't have power or resolve to change his situation , and there is also burden of all those memories
Maybe it is time to create a new path? Not one of Justice but much more primeval aspect ... aspect of Truth
How hard would it be instead of pursuing Justice , to channel all that is left from her connection to Element of Honesty and force others not only to see unblamished and unbiased truth of situation but also force all those politicians and Celestia to say nothing but truth and not "Truth from certain point of view" ?
In normal circumstances ? Rather hard ...
But as wounded and tired as she now is ... It is ideal moment to invoke greater magic
With all those experiences and memories that tell that her cause is right one , or at least worth pursuing ,,, Memories so heavy would surely serve as powerful ritual component ...
And what would be greater Justice than making them all be unable to ignore the truth and all that lies behind it ?
Especially considering that inability to lie is death sentence for any politician
After all our protagonist is not Luna , betrayed Princess of Moon and Self-proclaimed Champion of Justice
She is also not Lucas , tired human that wanted to change something in his life
Lucna is both of them and even more than that
So if you ask me? It is ideal moment for futher ascension and raise of new God of Truth on level beyond that of Alicorns , ascension fueled by some demonic "healthy diet"
And Moon might even help with it , within Moon symbolism lies not only change but Revealing light...
But that is just wishful thinking
I love this story, and I understand that development is important, but I want to see the real world!
We already had to wait half the story and as soon as we come back to the present day you throw us back into his head, give us a break!
11858319
No, I get all that. But that was literally never a problem for Luna. Only Luna + Nightmare. Luna always used enough force to deal with the threat and then stopped. Usually, she did so in a way that turned a large part of the threat into an ally. I'm pretty sure Luna could 'win' here without going all out monster here. Perhaps by turning Celestia against her human allies who just maimed her beloved sister, and escaping in the confusion. Then the US and Equestria are too busy being at war to find her and she can relax on a beach or something.
The thing most at issue here is the Nightmare's influence, and I am complaining that we don't have enough information about demons or mental combat and other junk to sensibly resolve that issue here.
Huh, i wonder what will happen to luna's severed wing. i also thought her fear would've been betrayal
11858073
What indeed.

Your understanding is correct. But only time will tell if your deduction is.

*Trixie, shouting in the distance*
"Fight fight fight fight!"
11858131
Fiendbane is indeed correct here. Remember we're back in the present.
11858161
infinite money glitch is one way to put it.
11858196
I'll admit, this ending is a bit convoluted with all the twists and turns I've laid.
But it does make sense if you take a few steps back.
11858201
Oh you're going to love the sidefic.
11858501
A break? During the climax? I think not.
11858527
I think you'll be getting your answer sooner rather than later.

Cool, looking forward to the next chapter.
You probably didn't want this to feel like a comedy but this is the funniest thing I've read all week. Off the top of my head I can think of seven different ways he would be stopped.
1. The Elements, duh.
2. His conquest causes enough chaos to free Discord and he's toast, probably litteraly.
3. His conquest causes enough strife for wendigos to appear and make him into a cold (wingless) turkey.
4. We see that alicorns still need to eat and sleep in the show, so he would have to eventually stop being a shadow and would instatly get a bullet to the head from a sniper a mile away.
5. He can still see and hear as a shadow so I bet a simple flashbang grenade would disorient him enough to knock him out of the shadow form and then a bullet to the head.
6. Whatever material Chrysalis' throne is made of is brought near him and he's helpless.
7. Finally Sci-Twi, a normal human high schooler, was able to make a compact device to locate, steal and grant humans magic without even knowing it existed. With the fate of the world on the line, scientists would crack magic and ways to beat it faster than you can say "Probably delusional from a severe concussion".
To be fair, he can't know about some of those but still, the amount narcissism to think you can take not one, but TWO worlds unopposed warants a dose of reality check and a visit or two to a psychologist.
