"Begging your pardon your Highness, but wasn't Princess Platinum white of coat, rather than Dun?" (for reference, dun is an olden times term for brown.)
Mom kept a big secret huh. Raises the question of why their town wasn't helped when things started going south (hah!), if they were related like that. I assume that the mom went into hiding, the rest of the royal family seemed pretty nuts so I don't blame her.

Jokes aside, Starswirl seems to be... Well somewhat dimwitted, or at the very least incognizant of the whole ordeal. "We just survived a massive battle between the three tribes and attacks from the windigo in which many hundreds have fallen. In the end, all of ponykind had finally come together as one tribe in order to defeat the enemies that have been plagued ponykind in ice for decades." - Clover, whilst in a field of dead bodies.
"Cool. Write a report. I'm sure it'll be an exhilarating read." - Starswirl
I've seen stories where Starswirl is portrayed as a kooky fella, and that's fine, usually he has a more serious side hidden below, you don't exactly become The Starswirl the Breaded without some serious dedication and work, but in the given situation... It kinda makes Starswirl seem tone-deaf.
Now, Tia and Lulu being related to the Royal Family? I can see them slipping into rule fairly easily, given they are unicorns and related to the royal family. Also given that they've been raised among Earthponies, the two definitely have traits that would appeal to those tribes. Not sure about the Pegasi myself.
I absolutely love the idea of Lulu and Tia being related to the royal family, not just some power mage as I assumed in the royal court. It seems things are about to get very interesting once that gets out.
Although... back on speculations, I wouldn't put it against Tia if she got some petty revenge by refusing the unicorns for a while, given their mother and the whole 'let them starve' thing. For now, I'm expecting Tia's rule to be more of an informal thing until they get their civilization back up and running, in which I'm assuming Discord happens so that they both ascend and take the throne. I can't really see Tia and Lulu taking the throne at separate times. They 'supposedly' had equal power while ruling, if Lulu came to power after Tia, then I can't help by see her as just The Spare, after and second to Celestia.
I suddenly have a sinking feeling that the problems with Unicornia stem from a betrayal involving Nebula Glow.
Nebula Glow, who was apparently royalty. Yet she was living as a peasant. Either nopony knew, which was why no food was allocated to their village, or somepony did know, and deliberately blocked aid.
So... Nebula Glow went from the royal life, to having nothing. Cast out of her home, having to live as an unknown in the middle of nowhere, with no resources. A mirror of Luna's current situation.
Celestia has to be aware of the similarities. Maybe the circumstances are different, but in her mind, Celestia inflicted Nebula's fate on Luna. When she finds out that Luna physically died, she might actually break.
If Nebula's exile happened anything like I think it did, I hope Luna starts calling Celestia "Iridium".

I'd say it's about right for how the show portrayed Starswirl.
They're also glossing over the fact that Celestia didn't want to harbor those ponies, in fact she was dead set on turning them all away until Luna convinced her to be the better pony.
It's all good, really, but... I NEED ACTION! PRESENT TIME!!!!!

"Don't... Don't worry about it. It's a human thing."

It's important to remember, Starswirl is already an old stallion at this time. This most definitely isn't the first battlefield he's been on.
Also come on, it's Starswirl the asshole we're talking about.

Again, this isn't the "perfect" Celestia we all know in canon. She had to learn those lessons just like everyone else.

We've got a bit more to go over before then.

I would just like to point out that I personally consider 'canon' Celestia far from perfect. In fact I think of her as one of the most flawed with what little we see of her in the series.
