I want to believe that Celestia's heart is in the right place. But she really looks like a glory hound right now.
If she were there to protect Luna, she'd have stayed with Luna. If she were there to save as many of her ponies as possible, she wouldn't have ducked into a side street.
Is she trying to claim glory in order to reinforce her position as leader of the new tribe?
Or... is she trying to reach Sapphire and Emerald before Luna can confront them? If so, does she want to force a surrender before Luna has the chance to "get revenge," or does she want to silence them before they can reveal something she's hiding from Luna?
Or worse, does she simply want to claim revenge herself?
It's getting harder and harder to believe reconciliation is even possible. More and more of Celestia's words and actions paint her as having been a toxic influence on Luna their whole lives. Even in the best case, she still seems to consider Luna as a mentally challenged attack dog who requires careful management to keep her from mauling somepony out of nowhere.
There are 3 things keeping me from giving up on the idea that Celestia is even redeemable. First is that the stated premise of this fic isn't "what if Celestia was the villain all along," it's "what if Luna was thrown into space instead and wound up reincarnating as a human."
There are other changes, yes. Like Nightmare Moon being a fabrication of Celestia's. But there are only so many changes a fanfic can spring on the reader before it stops being "clever twists" and starts to resemble a form of gaslighting. So I don't think Celestia is going to turn out to have been evil all long.
Second is that, despite everything we know about Celestia and her flaws, she was still chosen by Harmony. Granted, Harmony's role in this story is also suspect. But Harmony is at the very least pretending to be a force for good. I don't see it picking a nascent tyrant to represent Kindness and Laughter unless it's the real villain of this story. Again, I think that's too big of a change; at worst I think it's just callous and may owe Luna reparations of its own.
Third is that the author has teased the sequel to this fic, and it appears to be from Celestia's PoV. I can't speak for everyone, but if I read a story which ends with the revelation that the protagonist's closest friend has in fact been undermining them since childhood, I would not want to follow that up with a story from that character's perspective. I don't think Neph is that cruel to their readers, so I'm inclined to believe there's something yet to be revealed that will explain why Celestia has done the things she's done yet hasn't shown the expected amount of remorse.
I just hope it doesn't turn out to be something like illusions, mind control, or altered memories. Looking at you, Nightmare, don't think I didn't notice that these memory sequences only happen while Luna's asleep.

I agree.
I wouldn't want Celestia to be bad or dumb either. But so far this is exactly the case. Of course, there are hints of some mitigating circumstances... But that doesn't really excuse Celestia's behavior.
It will also be a little disappointment if it turns out that one of the sisters (or both) was under mind control.
I want to say something. The characters in this story (and commentators) consider young Luna to be mentally retarded/insane/moon-marked/autistic. But I don't think that's the case. Yes, she is a little dreamy and introverted, but she is a ordinary, healthy personality.
Luna became really crazy after the second "rebirth" (from human to pony). Maybe earlier, when Celestia betrayed her and they started fighting, but I'm not sure. Did Luna then have the intention to kill Celestia? Or did Luna just want to beat up this selfish fool?

Just so we're clear, no commenter that I've seen here has equated autism to mental retardation or insanity. I personally have mentioned that Celestia might believe it to be the case, which would be a huge mark against her. But at no point has Luna's Moon Mark been treated as an actual disability or liability beyond the social disconnect she suffers with other ponies. Which is a realistic depiction of many people on the spectrum IRL.
She does have a normal, healthy personality. She is also autistic. These things are unrelated.

I think Celestia is the type of villain, who genuinely believes she's doing the right thing for the right reasons. "The Road to Hell" and all that kind of stuff. What I'm afraid of is that the author in the end will decide to turn everything upside down and show that all those hints, that we use, in the end will not be important and in fact everything is completely different. Not good for story.
About "Harmony". There is no harmony in it. I think we met an entity that Moon called "Traitor." That's what it did- drove a wedge between the sisters. I bet it said something to Celestia, too, that made her suspect Luna.

Yeah, that's one of the reasons why I like "Memories" part a much more. In the present, Luna is a husk of herself. Totally understandable, but I still like "Memories" more.

Yes, you're right. I should have separated these things.
If my memory serves me correctly, in the story, some characters called Luna crazy or something like that. But in the comments, Luna was simply called autistic pony.
Well, we've fallen into a bit of a contradiction trap... In my opinion, it is related. I'll explain.
If Luna is considered autistic, then she cannot be healthy. It is included in the ICD-10th and it has complex certain criteria (11th is not accepted in some countries, including mine). You can think otherwise and I'm not trying to dispute that.
I just wanted to say that I don't consider Luna to be autistic. She's just an ordinary pony. And there's nothing wrong with her social distance. It's even justified (character trait /bullying from other foals / hard life). In addition, Luna was isolated only from outsiders. She had a good relationship with her mother and sister. For example, she played with Tia and stuff like that.

sometimes you can accidentily manage your disability correctly without knowing so or others can help you without your notice. like a few people who had dyslexia might have had a better time reading with games with coulerd text boxes and accidently improved their reading skill with it. Some parents can see things in their kids they rememeber struggeling with and will help push their kids into figuring things out.
So yea luna might have has a leg up with her mother being autistic aswell and she might have gotten help during her time with the earth pony village
Another karmic scenario for the pile.
Ten years ago, Princess Celestia left Equestria on an urgent mission to recover her missing sister.
Nine years and nine months ago, Celestia's guard escort brought her and Princess Luna back to Equestria. Both were comatose. Princess Cadance was named Regent, as she refused to accept the crown in truth.
Nine years ago, Twilight Sparkle successfully determined that the sisters were being kept unconscious because of a spell. She was also able to determine that Celestia was the pony who cast the spell, but not which spell was cast.
Eight years ago, the Changeling Queen Chrysalis was found unconscious next to Princess Celestia's hospice bed. Investigations indicate she attempted to use mind magic to learn enough about her to replace her and "miraculously recover," but was drawn into the same spell which is affecting the sisters.
Seven years ago, Discord broke free of his stone prison. He reportedly declared "Wait, this is just a hypothetical timeline. Nuts!" and turned himself into a statue made of glued together acorns.
Six years ago, Twilight Sparkle discovered the nature of the spell keeping the sisters unconscious. It was a memory scanning spell, which allows the caster to experience select memories of an unconscious subject as a dream. The spell keeps both parties unconscious as a safety measure. Twilight Sparkle stated that "either Princess Celestia decided to relive her sister's entire life, which is ridiculous, or something went wrong. We're still trying to figure out what the issue is, but in the worst case, they'll wake up in a few more years. That's how long it would take for the spell to process the entire life memories of somepony as old as Princess Luna."
Three years ago, Princess Celestia woke up, and immediately teleported away. Later analysis indicated her destination was Tartarus. Princess Luna woke up a few hours later, and had to be sedated to prevent her from attempting suicide. When asked why Celestia would teleport to Tartarus immediately on waking up, Luna responded "to be among equals." She has since refused to answer any questions "until that pony-shaped pile of poisonous pyrite actually confesses. The fucking coward."
One year ago, Queen Chrysalis woke up and was admitted to a psychiatric care facility after it was determined she now believed herself to be Nightmare Moon. Security staff reports, "she keeps complaining about acorns in her bed. We thought she was making it up, but it turned out somepony is teleporting an acorn under her pillow every night. No idea how, this building is supposed to be warded against that."
Last week, Princess Twilight Sparkle returned from an exploratory mission to Tartarus and reported that Celestia has been found, but refuses to return "until Luna herself orders it." Princess Twilight also declared that she had solved the mystery of the spell which kept the sisters asleep for years. Observers noted that it must be bad, "because solving a mystery always puts a smile on her face, but she looks like she just found out she has horn cancer."
This morning, Princess Twilight Sparkle explained that the problem with the spell was Celestia's selection parameters for which memories to scan. "It's normally not an issue, but Luna is almost as ancient as Celestia, and the parameter, singular, turned out not to narrow things down as much as Celestia thought it would. She wanted to know what she'd have to do to get Luna to come home voluntarily. So she set just the one parameter. 'How badly has Celestia hurt you?'"

I think you'll all be content with Celestia's character arch during this.

I'd just like to point out, just because I don't treat it as a disability, doesn't mean the characters wouldn't.

How cruel of me to torment Chryssi like that.
Ah well.
