"Real loyal ponies you have there, Princess Celestia. Night Guard, at the very least only refuse orders when told to employ lethal force on citizens of the crown, rather than to withhold it.."
Having seen all of this, I can only hope Celestia gets some kind of comeuppance from this. I honestly don't think she deserves Luna's (or Lucas's, since thats the closest she'sl ikely to get) forgiveness.
I'm not sure what kind of ending you have in mind here, but I am looking forward to it.

Ah, ok. My bad.
Through some weird combination of speed-reading and ADD-fueled pauses, I read the last line about three seconds before the end of the song. So I guess that worked out.
Also, at this rate, I expect the climax to be another five or six chapters.
Here comes the six, I hope they can help Luna/Lucas.
So an interesting note is that it would seem all the mental stuff is underlying, rather than in-sequence. The physical body/mind is acting out the combination of personalities, while there is a completely separate, though related fight happening inside the mindscape. Mental Luna isn't acknowledging the outside world at all, save for right at the end. This then would also give some explanation how the memory sequences could be so long and thorough, yet so short time-wise. It's been happening. Getting knocked out just catches her up. And of course, life flashing before eyes trope.
I see this playing out one of two ways.
The Elements work. The Nightmare is purged, and possibly destroyed. Celestia expects the tearful reunion she got in canon, only for Luna to (maybe literally) spit in her face. It would also raise the question of why the Elements didn't purge the Nightmare the first time around, though that could be because the Nightmare was so subtle and well hidden that it was insulated by Luna's own mind.
The Elements don't work, because the Nightmare still doesn't have control of Luna. Luna successfully purges the Nightmare on her own, and Celestia comes to realize, with mounting horror, that the Elements didn't work either time because the Nightmare was never in outright control, and she really was solely fighting Luna back then.
Hmm... it occurs to me that Celestia may have merely been mistaken when she told the story of Nightmare Moon, rather than lying outright. She clearly knows the Nightmare exists, and assumed it was possessing Luna. She may have told others that it was another creature, Nightmare Moon, because even in a world of magic, demonic possession is probably seen as an excuse for criminal insanity.
Classic deus ex machina... I truly hope it isn't as gimmicky as FiM and other fics use it, ie complete mind alteration, reset, destroy's demon, etc. It's just... It leaves no room for an actual story or struggle, and the morality of it is also dubious...

I think it would be better if the elements don't work. Luna never became a monster except for when Celestia betrayed her (and even then she wasn't really a monster). Until then, Luna was in control the entire time and the demon was more of an annoying presence in her head.

It looks like a great chance to rub salt in the wound for Celestia and prove that she was wrong the entire time yet again. But I'm more curious how the elements of harmony got together in this world where Luna wasn't banished on the moon. Would there even have been the prophecy of "Nightmare Moon's Return" without a giant silhouette on the moon's surface? I doubt any of Luna's achievements would be remembered or celebrated by ponies after her exile since ponies in this universe are pretty strongly against anything moon related.

That is my stated reason for why the Elements likely didn't work the first time around. When I say "work," I don't mean "neutralize Luna." I mean "Purge the Nightmare." If it works this time, it'll probably be because Luna is actively trying to force the Nightmare out, whereas the first time around the Nightmare was just sitting back and watching the show.
11858934
The third possibility. The "Elements" are not exactly elements of "Harmony" and only make things worse.

Definitely a good chance to do so. I've watched a fic where within the first two chapters, mc was a human(or elf, something idr) or something in Equestria got blasted by EoH for a misunderstanding through the mane6's usual ineptitude. And since it was from a first-person perspective, gave readers a chance to see what it looked like it looked like/was to be blasted by the EoH. Here's how it went.
The fic quickly literally just made the EoH force some great realization and understanding on the MC, then suddenly it's all okay.

I have the same thoughts. I'm afraid if these fears come true, it will disappoint me very much...
3 things:
1)
The glitch I'm imagining goes something like: Luna has 1 unit fear. Nightmare gets .5 units and uses them to make Luna more fearful, At 100% efficiency now Luna has 1.5 units fear and Nightmare gets .75. Repeat. Luna has 2.25 units and Nightmare has 1.125. The function tends towards infinity.
This relays on a number of assumptions. Nightmare's efficiency does not decrease. Nightmare's previous effects add to the next iteration(if not the sequence converges to Luna being twice as scared as when she started, not infinitely scared). Luna is physically capable of feeling infinite fear. Luna's mounting fear of what her actions might cause will not kill her, either by stress induced heart attack, or by being too scared to act to eat or to breathe or otherwise maintain herself. There is no reason to believe any of these assumptions are accurate.
2) The only reason I had to make the supposition was by assuming that the Nightmare wasn't going have chosen to get trapped in Luna's head for no benefit. There isn't actually anything established in universe that suggests that's what happens. Maybe Nightmare didn't know and was just filled with a sense of scientific curiosity. Maybe Nightmare miscalculated and is going to starve to death. Nothing about this has been established beyond "Nightmare probably isn't suicidally idiotic".
3)
Over 2/3 of this story has been devoted to build up. We are in the climax now. Are you seriously trying to tell me that the answers necessary to the understanding of this final confrontation actually haven't been established yet? I know it hasn't established the mane 6 and apparently that's going to be a thing. Is Pink Text actually just Pinky Pie? Is the conclusion to this story actually just going to be 3 deus ex machinas in a trench coat? Honestly, I think that'd be worse than the garlic thing.
When Luna wakes up after getting blasted by the elements
My idea of an ideal outcome at this point is;
The Elements successfully purge the Nightmare. Luna passes out from her injuries and stress. Celestia, thinking the main problem is finally dealt with, goes to make sure Luna is alright, but is stopped by the Element bearers, who wear mixed expressions of fear, heartbreak, and rage. It turns out that since Luna was never rejected by the Elements, the remaining connection allowed the current bearers to see what really happened on the night of the Betrayal from Luna's perspective.
The bearers spell it out for her; the Nightmare was never in control. Everything Celestia did to her sister was completely unjustified and actually helped the Nightmare in the end.
And the bearers are not going to stay quiet about it.
Cue sequel, wherein Celestia has to try and hold Equestria together even as her own ponies are demanding her head on a pike.
Well would you look at that
Here comes the complication
The question is ... Who will elements support ?
Old bearer that was not fully cut out from connection ?
Or new bearers that ... I don't think they had trials of the forest in this timeline ... But it is possible that Tree gave them something closer to OG!Trials which might show Mane Six that is more experienced ,.. or mentally unstable
Or maybe New bearers will stand with ye olde new Moon , since Honesty seemed like someone who would shove historical truth in someone face
Well time will tell , and no matter the outcome there is one thing to do :
<Booming Zeus Voice>
RELEASE ... THE POPCORN !!!
I really hope Luna doesn't forgive Celestia after this just because Luna admits that she shouldn't have made the deal with Nightmare, Celestia is just as guilty as Luna or even more so and deserves her own punishment.
11859038
This would be the best outcome, but most times we readers have been disappointed with what obviously shouldve happened with something that shouldnt have happened.
11859167
If I expected it to be right, I wouldn't have posted it, because it would be a spoiler.
I'm tentatively optimistic about where the author is going with this, anyway. I just hope the sequel doesn't get bogged down in some Equestria/Earth war or something. As a framing device for an exploration of Celestia's character flaws, perhaps, but not as a central plot.

Oh shoot... I didn't mean for you to finish by the time the song stopped.
I may have accidentally did it last time, but I know everyone reads at different speeds.

It would've been cheap to use the line "My life flashed before my eyes."
11858982
11858996
Disagree. This time there is definitely something wrong with Luna.
11858995
What elements would they be then?
11858999
I was referring to the mental combat stuff.
11859022
Simultaneously, I think you're underestimating just how large a "tide of shadows" Luna can really summon.
Although to be fair, you can't know just how much power is behind the roiling ocean of a tormented soul that is augmented by a Demon Prince.
