How about...he's asking her out on a date for one reason only.
To get back at her for trapping him in Equestria.
This is what I like to imagine his plan is.
1- Ask Celestia out.
2- Make sure the date goes off without a hitch.
3- With a little luck, Celestia should be up for another date or so.
4- After a few weeks, maybe even a month or two, move in for a kiss. IF she recuperates, fantastic, if not, apologize and hope that her' Forgiving' attitude allows me to keep my head on its shoulders. If kiss was accepted, move onto stage 5.
5- After a few more months, Celestia and I should be very close. To make sure this is so, I should (Not) be myself, kiss (Ugh) her whenever she seems to want one, compliment her daily, and be prepared to engage in many hugs, wing squeezes ect.
6- With some luck, Celestia should be very much in love with me, and I her (Blugh!). It's around this time that I should subtly hint at taking it to the next level. With some luck, she will understand my 'hints' and either agree, or ask me to wait.
7- Once she's (eventually) agreed, she will most likely take me into her chambers, where we will then proceed to make love (Yeah right).
8- Afterwards, I should wait a few more weeks, making sure to kiss, snuggle and compliment her as much as I can without going overboard.
9- By this point, Celestia should be head over heels with me. It is at this point that I enact the final part of my plan.
10- I will prepare a nice dinner for her to enjoy, making sure not to appear nervous (I don't want her guessing my reason for it). She may ask why I've done this for her, it is at this point that I take the plunge and say that I never really loved her and that all of our relationship was worthless. If I still have my head attached, I will then bid her goodbye and walk out of the resturant/palace (Depends where we eat) with my head held high. I will then get my already packed belongings and leave Equestria, heading towards either the Zebra or Griffon.
Notes!: Do NOT fall in love with her, it will RUIN everything!
Make sure to pack everything before dumping her, otherwise I risk being 'interrogated' by either Luna, the guard or Celestia herself.
Do NOT hesitate when I dump her. Do NOT be swayed by tears or her pleas for an explanation.
And most importantly, find somepony who can make a crotch guard. I still wish to have 'them' intact by the end of it all.

I can a LOT of set backs on that plan starting with that takes at least 2 years to finish and he is willing to have sex with someone he hates, if this actually a way to get back at her, I imagine start by the all classic guilt trip using subtle ways to remember her how lonely he is and then her, then see if she truly TRULY was telling the true about she regretting what she did.
And by the punch line telling her why she don't let him die, and 3 times he should have die, and she should have let him. Dig for the true, why not let him die, and all 3 times it happen he wanted to die the 3 times instead she allow and keep him felling pain and hollow. A true heart to heart.
And THEN start his plan of she feeling horrible and bad, he ask if she feel that way and now they truly are on the same page, and the difference is, he has something no other pony has and she has something no other pony can give him. Mental Peace and then pass to face 2
