Well, Bob is thoroughly unlikable. He shouldn't have to apologize for being forced to live in the wild. Ponies never gave him a chance. Princess Celestia should be apologizing to him. And you don't get life in prison or death row for theft and assault. Especially since he's a child. I have no idea why Bob hates himself so much. He was trying to survive.

I mean, canonically they actually kind of don’t. Equestria is first of all the land of ponies, and while I’m sure plenty of them have friends of their own, there’s little evidence of pony culture actually putting friendship as such on some exalted pedestal any more than humans do.
Of course, on the other hand I also don’t think that canon ponies would be so quick (and, as of the next chapter, consistent) in offering a random stranger violence. Even Zecora as the original target of pony xenophobia only rated hiding and waiting until she left again, not the torches-and-pitchforks treatment, and nopony was particularly bothered by Gilda stopping by in Ponyville (even though griffons presumably do eat meat as at least part of their diet) until she in particular turned into Jerky McJerkface...
