Sunset hasn't received a message from Princess Twilight in a week. When she finally receives one, it's not from Princess Twilight. When she reads it, she finds that it's from her past self.
Knowing this, Sunset sets out on a course to make her past self realize that the mirror was false. That being an alicorn wasn't their destiny. She needed to make her past self understand. Otherwise, everything could go wrong. She doesn't care about the consequences.
However, the ramifications of her somehow being able to talk to her past self is something even worse than she expected...
This is an alternate universe, set in within one of the time altered universes that Starlight created.

I get that the 'I x me' ship is because of a contest, but everything else makes it a worthy and enjoyable read.
This reminded me of one of my favorite movies - Frequency. Awesome.
Yeah the ending was very fast, but having Sunset helping her past to stop a catastrophe is fantastic.

and oof! so this is a separate timeline that branched off in the past, rather than some weird time paradox thing where Sunset forgot having talked to an older version of herself before yeeting herself out of Equestria. well, now we can see the road not taken with young Sunset, if our Sunset has anything to say about it!
oh wow, okay, well that just raises further questions! i guess the two sides of the portal got switched between the timelines, except now it’s connecting to the future of the other Sunset’s Equestria, maybe?
oof, that is a lot to lay on either Sunset! though at least the young one has hope to change her own future. if so, is our Sunset stuck with the Equestria in her timeline being a Nightmare Moon-ruled one?

well this was sudden, but all the same, very heartwarming to have Celestia properly be the other Sunset’s mother figure, and Cadance her older sister! in the end, she did manage to find the family she was supposed to have, and save the world
well i am glad that you did write it and that i finally got around to reading it, much later than i should have! Sunset communicating with her younger self, and getting her to pursue the road not taken in remaining in Equestria is a great idea, and the complicated mix of feelings our Sunset would have about meeting such a Sunset in person, and possibly losing the Equestria that she knew, were also great things to explore. this would have worked better as friendshipping though, and i do regret not emphasizing that in the contest premise.

Hang on, when Alternate timeline Celestia and Sunset go back, if Twilight has fixed things by then will they become some sort of time remnant, forever no longer able to get back to their own timeline, or is the portal now connected to two timelines. Maybe I’m overthinking it and it’s forever connected to alternate Sunset’s timeline.
