Canterlot had been Lyra's home for a long time. She had many fond memories of it, of the streets, of the shops, and of the ponies she'd met there. Her favorite memory of Canterlot, however, was leaving it, and that was because of the soulmate she found soon afterwards.

It's short, but it's enough to know they were meant for each other.
That was a really sweet story! You mentioned not having experienced bigotry like others have, but I thought you presented the stuff with Lyra's parents well. Keeping it vague worked well for the story too, and emphasized how that pales in comparison to her love of Bon Bon and her other positive interactions.
