DragonsHeart

I find that the plot is always the most important to me, everything else is just a wonderful bonus.

T

I was once Joy and now I am Sorrow.

A thing immune to magic and unable to be destroyed by force. We all thought it is impossible for such a thing to exist... But in Star Swirl the Bearded University, they proved us all wrong. They summoned a creature from a race of beings formed by magic and negative emotion. They merge it with a mare against her will and tried to bind it... they failed and payed the price. Now it is up to Elements of Harmony to stop the creature, but when they find it everything changes. Watch as they fight against two groups who wish to control the fate of Equestria if not the entire world and follow their journey to discover what it truly means to be a monster, what truly is evil and about a race of creatures that have always watched from the shadows and tried to make us happier.

Do not fear the shadows, fear those who cast them, for they are real and shadows are not. - the First.

Featured on 29/10/2016: Proudest day of my life!!!!!:rainbowdetermined2:

(Warning: This story contains slight bits of strong bits of gore and violence here and there. Also while I have tagged this romance, there won't likely be much. Also bad language!)

Proof read by my pain in the arse brother and the wonderful Bugze and now the also wonderful TheLunarRepublic2244. Also edited by one of my parents.

That is nice to know:pinkiehappy:
I hope to bring you more chapters soon.

6218738
Either would work in my mind:pinkiesmile:
I am glad you like it and I hope I don't disappoint you.

“No, I don’t to die,” she answers, softly.

Missed a 'want' in there.

6228765
Thanks for catching that:pinkiesmile:
Bloody stupid really that I missed that:applejackconfused:

People don't scream when they're stabbed. They CAN'T scream when they're stabbed. This is because when someone thrusts a knife or similar object at the chest area it pushes all the air in the lungs out. They might make wheezing noises at most but there cannot be screaming.

6274597
Dammit, I'm writer not a doctor!:twilightangry2:
Also that's fair and makes sense:pinkiesmile:
But it is written that she screamed after she was stabbed and he is just twisting the knife.

This is very good, I'm looking forward to seeing more.

Wow, you like my work? That makes me happy:pinkiehappy:
I actually kind of hate chapter 1, because I thought that there was too much talking but couldn't find anyway of cutting it down.
It makes me happy to know people don't hate it.

Stars Swirl the Breaded University

The tastiest of archmages. :rainbowlaugh:

6296043
Pardon me while I kill my proof-reader:twilightangry2:
Thanks for picking this up:pinkiesmile:
Your profile picture really suits what you are saying.

6296043 Huh, I didn't notice that:rainbowhuh:

:rainbowlaugh:That's actually pretty funn-*gets shot*

Finding this tale quite interesting, thus far~

6296043 They say that one day, Starswirl the Breaded simply disappeared, never to be seen again...

I fear this joke is going to haunt me for a long time:pinkiesmile:

If you're still looking for an editor, I'd be willing to take up the role. It'll be my first time doing so, but writer's block is bringing progress on all of my incomplete stories, both published and unpublished, to slower than a snail's pace, so I have a lot of free time to edit.

7075985
Thanks for the offer, but I already found one:pinkiesmile:
Though I do appreciate the offer though:pinkiehappy:

Is Spike dead? Or is Rarity overreacting? Who know because there's a fucking CLIFFHANGER!!!!!!

that dragon should have been more,,, Polite I Think, also a bioshock reference would have been easy.
Stop, would you kindly, come here, would you kindly. Continue Writing this story, Would you kindly.

Not his style, he likes to be more direct.
It works better

“And that* why he choose* her,” says another.

That's*
Chose*

One of the hooded ponies bends down and looks at her, she swears he is grinning under the hood. “Well you see we are going to summon a very dangerous creature, 1and you see1well none of us want to die. So we just used your family’s blood to make this very powerful binding circle so that the creature won’t kill us and 2will2 follow our orders,” he says, as one might lecture a child, she heard traces of insanity distorting that voice, “But you see we needed a lot of blood for this circle and sadly your family passed away as we extracted it…”

1no need to repeat that1, put instead: and well. . .
2 there's no need for will, but it's not wrong to have it there though.

“… and if you want to see them, they’re right over1"he continues, pointing to the other side of the room.

you forgot to add a 'there'

"1Oh1 temper,” says the 2most likely totally insane2 one.
1: Ooh temper (both work though)
2: that implies that he can be partially insane

The 1unsure hooded ponies1 shivered. “No, we shouldn’t do this,” 1he says1 looking around nervously, “I mean we could get killed for this!”

1: you went from plural to singular.

" Yes, these 1creature1 cannot be destroyed by magic or even by might,” says the old pony, “It’ll just absorb any spell they throw at it and then*,* swat them out of the sky! Even if they manage to destroy their body it will 1reform!1 It will then summon more of its kind under my… our control and then*,*we will conquer the whole world and rule it with an iron hoof!”

1: I admit that I am not very certain, but I think the word repair fits better what the creature is going to do when damaged

The ending was enough to put me on edge... perfect.

loved the ending of this chapter.

hope to see more soon

Good thing that the situation was defused before anyone else was killed... but I can't guess what Surgical Edge has in mind.

I'm sorry, but the Sorrow x Pinkie is to strong to ignore.

Please continue. Need more sorrow.

No point in guessing I'm afraid, the creature you are about to witness has no presence in the MLP cannon.

Do not fear the shadows, fear those who cast them, for they are real and shadows are not. - the First.

Good quote - very God indeed

Just finished reading 12 chapter.
I'm not sure if my imagination is than universal or simply it's not that hard to came up with monsters like that. Basically I have few OC who have similar powers to Sorrow, and similar origins as well:
- Ancilla Mortis
- White Tulip
- Antumbra

7968588 Sorrow is based on race I made up years before this version my MLP existed, although it's not unluckily that similar ideas would exist out there. But the bottom line is that this story was built for race, not the race for the story. Probably one day I'll write a non-mlp version of this story.

Also imagine it wouldn't be hard to think up monsters like Sorrow, since basically it's something that eats emotions, there probably hundreds of stories with creatures like that, although I've barely scratched the surface about what Shadow Men are, and what they are about. It is just a shame that they are too complicated to put down in a narrative sense.

7968678
Eating emotions is something I find very canon-like (changelings, windigoes, [EQ]sirens).

I was talking more about not being able to die, being magic-resistant, lacking specific physical form, etc.
Of those three names I mentioned only White Tulip is actually alive in common sense, and she wouldn't have a problem with eating alicorn, but not because she's that powerful. She's simply as fast as shadow.

Other two are something similar to ghost but not really. They don't have body but can interact with physical world. Unicorn's magic don't affect them, but they still can cast spell of their own. Rather freaky topic to speak about if mortals don't have words to describe them.

7968878 I should like to mention that Shadow Men aren't, nor what they do are evil(like changelings, windigoes, [EQ]sirens, they just lack the intelligent, or in Sorrow's case the empathy, to see the difference between right and wrong. Also whether or not Shadow Men are alive is debatable, on one hand ones like Sorrow can feel emotions, they can also think and make decisions, but on the other hands most of them can't, and so many other reason why one could argue Shadow Men aren't alive.

7970423 And those three of mine aren't evil per say as well. Monsters make best heroes.Besides 'WHAT you are?' and 'WHO you are?' are completely different questions.
Mine White Tulip isn't evil but she need pony flesh to sate her hunger. She can survive on blood but it wont take hunger away
Another good question is definition of life. You can't say what is alive if you don't know what is life. My definition of life is presence of its three parts: Soul, Body and Vis Vitalis (trans-life force). Yours Shadow Men have Soul, but they lack Body and Vis Vitalis. Sorrow may have Soul, but her 'Body' is more like manifestation than physical material, and of course, she lack Vis Vitalis.

7971233 I think you missed that part of the story when I said that Sorrow doesn't have a soul.

7973498 Distinction between Soul and Vis Vitalis is hard to grasp so maybe its other way around. Still they are non-mortal being belonging to non-material plane of existence.

7974711 I think I should know, this is my thing. In my world a souls are the essence of what you are, your memories mostly as well as few other things. Shadow Men are just memories they've collected, nothing else, they are not called Shadow Men for no reason, they are called Shadow men, cause that is what they, shadows of people, their pale imitations, no soul no life.

7974765
The definition of life I came up, and am using, says that soul cannot exist in mortal plane without Vis Vitalis.
What you consider soul and what I consider soul may be different from each other.
I'm not going to argue here. Your Story - Your World - Your Definitions.
...Is it possible that Sorrow here is a golem? I mean if original Sorrow was inanimate and 'they' used Joy's body to make it (I understand Shadow Men have no gender [still want to write"he"]) material creature when its kind of like golem.

7974901 Golem are man made, robots, things of materials, but in the end I guess wheither you call a Shadow Man alive or not is totally in perceptive of the beholder. Not to mention that there is something from Shadow Realm called golems already. I can write much more about this without spoiling the story.

7976562 I know what golem is. Inanimate object given life.
I mean 'something akin to golem' not a golem per say. The closest thing to golem here would Joy's mask - and it only works when is being wear.
'They' (Catalyst and co.) wanted to make Shadow Man (Single one not race) into a war beast, so there is some kind of golemancy, as well as soul-scribing, necromancy, and other staff involved. To much to think and write about in comments.
Patiently waiting for next chapter.
