This story is a sequel to The Unchosen One

Trixie has wings and a horn, but she isn't a princess yet. With Equestria's political situation fragile following the events of Tirek's attack and subsequent defeat, she has to hide her status from everypony. At the same time she has to learn how to control these new powers and try to earn the respect she desires.

Of course this would all be easier if there wasn't someone working against her from the shadows.

You don't need to read The Unchosen One before you read this, but since this is a direct sequel it would be good so you know how and why Trixie got those wings. It would also be good to have seen the ending of season 4. If you haven't yet, don't read the bit above where I mention Tirek. Don't read that last sentence either.

Heh, I see it didn't take long for Trixie to regain all that lost confidence. Becoming an alicorn does that, I guess.

Moon castle? Was that inspiration from the comics? Would have been funny to hear about Trixie chillin' with the creatures there.

Sundowner's got a mouth on him, that's for sure. And so does Trixie. Not a good combination...

Glad to see this story continue! Awaiting more!

Break that fool, Trixie. He ain't got nothin' on you.

Let's see how many more plans of Celestia will Trixie destroy just by being Trixie.

One: Awesome! A direct continuation of one of my favorite stories! Will track.

Two: Hmm, Celestia seems to be a fair bit hostile, not to mention manipulative. Will be interesting to see if she has just cause, or if she's wrong.

Three: Sundowner is an enormously conceited dick. It's one thing to insult a former student you never liked. It's quite another to insult a former student who is currently having breakfast with the nation's rulers (and who obviously isn't there to slice the bread for them). And taking a stab at Luna, while he's at it. I will enjoy watching him go down.

No editing flaws I could spot in this chapter.

Remember that the Pisa Sol was locked away because using it had side effects on Celestia's personality. She just used boatloads of its power to undo Nightmare Twilight's rampage. Having not used it for thousands of years her memories of its side effects might be a bit fuzzy and she isn't watching her own behavior as closely as she should be. Fortunately she has Luna watching for her.

I put all of my money (currently nothing) on Sundowner being Discord.

Why is it that otherwise supposedly sympathetic characters never seem able ta grasp the "fear" part of irrational fear? Ignorin' the fact that Trixie's fear wasn't actually irrational, it irks me that Twilight decided ta get mad about it instead of recognizin' that what she was scared of was somethin' inestimably bigger than herself. It's gonna be hard for me ta like Twilight in this one unless she suddenly grows a sense of empathy.

During the argument between Sundowner an' Trixie, Celestia gives me a Wonka-esque impression with the subdued "no, stop, don't"... an' Sundowner is a bad nut.

It amazes me, honestly amazes me, how Sundowner somehow believes he can openly insult a ruling diarch of his nature and suffer no consequences.

Or really, that he can openly insult anybody and suffer no consequences. It’s only going to be a matter of time before he says something to someone that will convince them they’d like to give dentistry a try.

This story is just as good as the one before it. :raritystarry: I love it, and I can't wait for more. :pinkiehappy: I'd love to edit for you.

Excellent. You're drafted, son. Welcome to the army. :rainbowdetermined2:

4557929 I can't believe I was the only volunteer! :pinkiegasp: Your original story was wonderful. I thought people would jump all over the chance to edit the sequel.:heart:

I really detest EVIL!Celestia stories, so I hope you don't go in that direction.

Maybe Celly is jealous that Twilly isn't paying as much attention to her?

Apparently saving your favourite student from herself make teacher real steamed.

Uhh... so Celestia's gone full blown evil. Wonder what's up.

You'll find out in, oh... a chapter or two. I promise. *crosses fingers* :trollestia:

You know what Trixie needs? A victory song.

Also, Princess of Illusions? Trickery? Loopholes? Gotta think on that further.

Going into this duel, I wasn't sure how it would turn out. Sure, Trixie's an alicorn now, and has gotten through some tough scrapes from the previous story, but the professor did have experience and some extra help. It was a good match, and I was surprised at how well Trixie managed throughout it all.

Discord being there as extra commentator was also fun.

Wow, what bug crawled up Celestia's butt and died? And here she was praising Trixie's unique take to magic in the last story.

Oh, and a little slip of Star Wars in there for good measure.

Looking forward to more!

Does the Celestia thing have anything to do with what happened in the extra scene at the end of the last story?

4563388
Well, without giving spoilers to the next chapter, which will explain a few things (gotta have some buildup before the dramatic reveal!)

The world has room for only one big boss! :trollestia:

Celestia acting strangely? Why I do believe you've never had the pleasure to meet her before she's had her morning coffee!

no but seriously yeah celestia is like literally trying to kill trixie for no other reason than she's an alicorn. What does Celestia know about being an alicorn that's so bad? Why won't she tell anyone else?

And don't be saying there's like an alicorn quota or something because then Cadance and Twilight would be on the hitlist too.

Yep, yep, Celestia just happens to be evil and jealous, it's just how she is. It couldn't possibly be an indication that something sinister is looming on the horizon and that the chessmaster might find herself just a pawn in a bigger game. No, absolutely not. She's probably just jealous because Trixie's wings are prettier than hers.

Also, now I feel a bit bad about hating on Sundowner.

The duel was pulled off well. I've always supported the idea that it's as much about skill as it is about power, hence why Trixie would still be able to provide a good challenge for Twilight (even in stories where she's just a unicorn). Here, of course, they got to show off both skill and power. Niiice.

I hate this professor. You can never fully escape your past. Luna will always have to deal with what happened with Nightmare Moon and Trixie will always have to deal with her boasting and what happened with the Alicorn Amulet. I expect Trixie to reveal herself with this duel. I also believe that if stuff like this keeps up, Trixie will become what Celestia is scared of.

Because the chapter titles are chess moves, I'm expecting this to be a story with decent length. I have a feeling that the Celestia we are currently seeing, isn't Celestia. As for Trixie, I think she could be the Princess of Ingenuity. She is known for thinking outside the box.

I think Trixie should be the Princess of Redemption. I read the chapters and seen how greatly she redeemed herself :trixieshiftleft:

Lets be honest here. We all want Trixie to be the Princess of AWESOME!
Or, following the events of the previous fic, Princess of BADASS!
Or, taking into acount both motions, Princess of EPIC!

Good chapter, I'm really loving this fic.

That... was quicker an' consequently much more satisfying than ah was expectin'.

Here's hopin' Trixie doesn't hafta explode Celestia before this's all over.

Quite good. Very much so. The plot twists are keeping me engaged. And Celestia's little tweak there... well, let's see what happens from here.

Come on. Everyone's missing the obvious. Trixie should be the princess of Tricks. Out of the box thinking, sneaky sideways ideas, and taking a dozen tricks to make one spell-like effect? Sounds about right.

4563545 Fuck Yeah! Tactical espionage be the best... or would it be magical espionage?

So, safe to say Trixie is in a lot of trouble then.
HOH Shiny when Twi finds out what you're doing...:twilightangry2:
You done goofed, Princy!

4601448
I think Twilight would be more than just upset when she finds out what's really going on here.

If there is one thing that any of us should have learned from this, it’s that Trixie is at her best when the going gets rough. I am excite.

I have the feeling the real reason Celestia doesn´t trust Trixie is because she is a wildcard, an unknown variable in her otherwise perfect plans. Twilight was groomed since childhood for being a Bearer of Magic and an alicorn. Celestia has guided Twi in every stept, molded her into her image, and I have no doubt she had plans about her future as ruler and probably the suitors more compatible with her. And now this Trixie Lulamoon comes from nowhere, gets involved in one of the Elements adventures, saves the world from the Nightmare, ascend into an alicorn on her own... all while winning Twilight´s heart in the process.
Summing, Celestia is worried because she cannot control Trixie like Twilight.

Of course Trixie is in charge of a rag-tag bunch of misfits. She is ever the underdog, and we love her for it.

That said, she's got her work cut out for her. Can't wait to see how this turns out.

Ah, I see where things are going now. And why so many of the characters are being uncharacteristic pricks.

Still, some things that bother me. I've never found the idea of a Celestia and Twilight match appealing. Too much iciness behind that one. Cadence comes across as bitter and resentful, so I'll have to wait to see why.

Another thing is Luna's speech patterns. She hasn't spoken like that since her season 2 debut so it's annoying to see it come back with no explanation.

Those issues aside, I really like how Trixie is being put in a position outside her comfort zone. Situations like these really help explore a character and show what they are really made of. Looking forward to how she works this out.

Till then!

4602393
Celestia wasn't a fan of the idea either, but for some reason after Cadence talked to her about it she can't get the thought out of her head.

4602424
Ah, I suppose that makes sense. Curious that Celestia doesn't notice Cadence's manipulation, but then she probably has her guard down since she doesn't suspect Cadence.

We shall see.

Well, at least it isn't evil!Celestia.

It's evil!Cadence instead. Grrrrrreeeeeaattt

So now Cadence has gone evil and has taken Shining and Celestia along for the ride. Of course, Shining may not be evil at this point and simply in Overprotective Big Brother Mode.

That almost explains Celestia's behavior, though those so deep in the throes of passion that they attempt cold blooded murder are usually either in denial or unconflicted about their feelings, neither of which is the case. But now we have Cadance acting bizarrely! Now I know she just got introduced to the story and hasn't had much chance to show her character but, first she says she doesn't like Celestia and wishes she could take her down a notch or two, then she attempts to murder a pony who as far as she knows may feel the same way, and might just be able to do it? That's a direct contradiction!

I'm just going with the theory that it was Shining Armor's magic, not Cadance's. I could never tell the two apart honestly. They're like that overdramatic syrupy sweet romance rag where the enamoured couple are such a perfect match for each other that even their magic colors match.

4603925
I'm sorry you don't like it. I wanted to try doing a more political/military story for a change. If it makes you feel better I have a more traditional magical adventure planned for once this is over (and a chess scholar should be able to tell you almost exactly how long that will take).

4603276
Shining Armor has pink magic, Cadence has blue magic.
And she hates that she's just part of a couple, too. If none of the Mane 6 had heard of her before the wedding, how important is she, politically? And then the next time we see her she gets shipped away from Canterlot.
Luna tried to destroy Equestria and even she's treated better. I bet that'd do wonders for someone's ego.

Dare I say I saw a little bit of borrowing from Phule's Company up in there? :derpytongue2: Good story to borrow from, of course, but I'm hoping it's not the same twist.

Then again, considering the ending of this chapter, we appear to be offroading from any expected path. Onwards!

I am amazed for what you have planned. And I have been seeing clever involved with Trixie a whole lot... Trixie shows to be competent in both The Unchosen One and the first two chapters of Scholar's Mate. I'm pretty sure this may lead Trixie into being the Princess of Competence :trixieshiftleft:

4603925 same here. i really don't like the idea of cadence being a villain. that contradicts the entire point to her existence as princess of love. and making shining armor completely unlikable, though not his fault, is still unpleasant. though my biggest turn-off is the complete lack of twixie. i don't know why i was expecting the sequel to actually develop their relationship

on a positive note, the biggest potential here is with the misfit night guard team. the setup with them is interesting enough that they could probably have their own story to themselves

4608864 i don't see anything wrong with the reasoning behind the celestia stuff. magnetbolt makes it very clear in the story that she's under mind control-like influence and has also stated that the twilestia thing didn't start until cadence began influencing her around the end of The Unchosen One. her machiavellian methods are because of this influence. it's not convenience, she's being manipulated

as for cadence, there really isn't much to canon cadence, she's almost as underdeveloped as shining armor. however, she isn't difficult to understand, as the entire point to her character is that she is the embodiment of love. in the episodes she appears in, we see that she is calm, caring, patient, and forgiving. cadence not acting like that was how twilight saw through chrysalis' disguise. in regards to this story, i wonder if chrysalis did something to cadence before the wedding or some dark magic-y stuff happened.
although, this is fanfiction, it would be silly to adhere 100% to canon models. while i don't agree with this interpretation, this is magnetbolt's story and magnetbolt's cadence. if he want's her to be a crazy villain for no reason, then that's just what we're stuck with

4604113

What? No that's... wait, you're right. Why did I remember it being pink? :pinkiesad2:

It's immortal Cadence! Half the time she's evil, and a quarter of the time she's not evil but still callous and manipulative! The characters in this fic didn't luck out and get the last quarter.

And... I know Sundowner is supposed to seem unreasonable, but really... she's a terrible student, cheats and lies, then grows up to be the close personal friend of the Princesses? While Sundowner paid his dues his whole life and got something not even half as impressive as godlike power and immortality. He doesn't know any of this though, and Celestia asked him to goad her, but even if she hadn't his reasons are a bit sympathetic, and it's not like Trixie even said a single thing in genuine defense or apology, she just talked about how great she was.

Basically flaunted her new status and plainly states no matter what he does he'll never be as important or powerful as she has become. So he came off as sympathetic even before it was Celestia's manipulation that was his reasoning behind this.
