Coronach is an RPG character. It's the only logical explanation. As long as he has at least one hit point, he's fine.

I have to say, you can write the most heartbreaking, depressing scene I've read all month, only to ruin the mood though the use of the word "snoot." Seriously, try saying it out loud. "Snoot." I dare you to not smile afterwards. Snoot. Snootity snoot snoot.

The snoot being the very end of the muzzle. A very tender patch of flesh around the nostrils, filled with thousands of nerve endings.
The snoot is very much like our fingertips, it allows an equine to feel stuff, check things out, sense textures, etc. It allows them to find tender shoots to graze upon and all manner of other functions.
I would imagine in the ponyverse that it would be a potentially intimate area.

Coronach has become Celestia's symbolic Equestria, which is why she is so resolute about him living. He's the physical embodiment of her troubles.
