"Perhaps the story now goes beyond the book." - Cornelia Funke, Inkheart

E
Source

On a midnight train, one mare travels to Canterlot. She goes to see Princess Luna, presiding in her Night Court. With her, she carries determination and a book. The book has been passed from parent to foal, from generation to generation for a time longer than most ponies can even imagine.

She travels to Canterlot to give the book to Luna.

And neither pony will be the same after.

Inspired by the exquisite fan work: Children of the Night.

Yet another finely crafted masterpiece.

....I am too tired to give a real review. Sleep deprivation is annoying.

This is wonderful! :pinkiesad2: I love it and have added parts of it to my Luna head-canon. (We really need a Luna emoticon)

Brilliant! A masterful work.

:pinkiesad2: .....im utterly speechless it was that good

Herk!! : grabs chest in delighted pain: ...the feels...dear sweet Luna the feels!!

Seriously though, very well done!! I loved that video, but this work, this tale of the origin of the Children, of one of them coming back, letting Luna know she was still so loved. It really took my breath away, and I cannot thank you enough for it.

I look forward to seeing more of your work, 'till then, best of luck!

Very good
Wish there was an animation for this story.

This sequel was amazing!!! :pinkiehappy:

This story of yours has the same a bit melancolic peace and the same haunting beauty of the movie, very well paced and very well written. It makes me tear up, and it takes quite a bit to do that.

I shall hunt down whoever gave this story a dislike and force them to watch all the episodes of every my little pony series in existence, except for the good one, oh and I'll rip their heart out.

I....CANT....LIKE....ENOUGH!!!!!! :pinkiecrazy:
Also listening to the song while reading the ending is amazing! :moustache:

Very well done! This is a fitting companion piece to that wonderful animation. I particularly like how you emphasized the compassionate and innocent nature of Luna's past actions, as so many commentators to the video piece seem to draw negative conclusions (Nightmare army, Luna as the Pied Piper, etc.). Bright Shade was well-developed as a character, hitting the right balance between naivete, confidence, and anxiousness. She felt real. Thank you for this heartfelt tale.

I myself know how it is to sleep most of the day and spend your time awake during the night. Not due to a job or anything like that, but because the nighttime is so much more comfortable and embracing to me. The way Bright Shade described it was deeper in emotion and so full of wonder that I couldn't have possibly done the same on my own. It really is full of possibilities.

This was a beautiful story. Thank you very much for it.

Thank you for the kind words. Bright Shade's attitudes about nighttime are pretty much pulled from my own experiences, so I'm very happy to hear that resonated with you!

This fic is a thing of beauty!

awesome man AWESOME. You should check out Night's Children.

I can do nothing more but agree. This is not of this world.
It is one of the most poetic and wonderful portrayals of Luna I've ever read. It's beautiful.
She comes of as light-hearted, full of love and compassion and, though unimaginable old and and experienced, breathtakingly close and personal.
And your OC was absolutely perfect as well. Her character complemented Lunas swimmingly.
She was someone you could actually relate to, someone absolutely true to herself.
Thank you

Such a beautiful story. its one of those rare ones that draw you in and makes you really connect with the characters. and i love this portrayal of Luna. A simple and bright take on Equestria. and i could really connect with the OC in the story. thank you for writing this and sharing it.

Ive been waiting for some time to see if there would be any sequels to the story of the CHILDREN OF THE NIGHT. I often wondered what happened to them. luna took them someplace, but the nature of their destination was never explained. In some stories, they were taken half-way across the galaxy, but why so far away. This story says they never left equestrian, but only changed, to a different state of being. Im sure luna is ecstatic to know that there are those who truly appreciate her night. Thank you for such a wonderful sequel to such a beautiful song, and story. Duo cartoonist has another song called CHILDREN OF THE NIGHT, instrumental OST, which has a wonderful picture to go with it. you should check it out.

This was...really good. Really really reallyreallyreally good. Good on you, pony!

Wow, I'm quite impressed. Honestly if someone had told me that this story was a sequal to Children of the Night, I prolly would've had low expectations for it, but going by the description, I was curious. Having read it, I really liked it, though I will say there is one small thing I would've changed, I would've had Luna offer Bright Shade the job of seneschal since it looks like Luna could use one. Whether she would've taken the job is a whole different story. Still, great work.

I still love rereading this from time to time
