Princess Twilight Sparkle had learned Pinkie Pie could break physics and her biology whenever she felt like breaking them. So, when Pinkie claimed that she had laid an egg, Twilight could have accepted it was possible with only moderate but short-term confusion.
However, the additional claim that Twilight, a mare, was somehow the egg's father broke even Pinkie Pie logic. As well as breaking the alicorn herself.

Pegasi have feathers, so maybe the sapient creatures of the world of Equestria follow a more mammalian-avian evolutionary heritage, with kirin, minotaurs, dragons, changelings, diamond dogs and abbysinians being the outliers?
Huh, you know, I was fairly amused by this story, but it wasn't getting any amazing feelings out of me.
Then the ending came and Discord got blasted. And I like it when Discord gets hurt.

But bats don't have feathers, pegasi do. My argument is that the 3 most common sapient species that the world that Equestria is in has both mammalian and avian features, i.e. feathers and fur(along with mammary glands, probably), they are the ponies, the griffons and the hippogriffs, and that the evolution of species that the world that Equestria is in either never had the avian and mammalian branch never fully separate from one another, that the avian and mammalian branches are much closer, or that there is a completely different branch of warm-blooded creatures that has both of the traits of both avians and mammalians(for lack of a better term, I'll call them avaio-mammals). Mind you, this is pure speculative headcanon of the arhcaeo-equinology of Equestria, so it's simultaneously right and wrong.

That's...a angle I never thought about. Canon does all but implies even pegasi don't lay eggs and if any pony could do it, it's Pinkie. But pegasi, despite being mammals, being able to lay eggs if their more avian-like genes allowed for it, or as part of Equestrian convergent evolution, or maybe just a very few pegasi being able to do it is kinda interesting. I would guess it would be a big shock for a HiE to see ponies laying eggs, and then the ponies be surprised that the human was surprised about it.

Glad you liked the story! As for the foal, given that 2nd egg was (likely) legit, I would imagine that Flurry Heart would have to settle for being the 2nd alicorn to be born in Equestria and have a playmate.
