Dig down to Y12 and dig parallel tunnels 2 blocks tall with 2 blocks between each tunnel.
At Y12 lava will be level with the floor of the tunnels, preventing you from falling into lava with no escape.
Each tunnel exposes the maximum number of blocks per block mined, yielding the highest consistent results for time invested and minimizing the threat from hostile mobs.

These are the comments I live for. A few things to add to your statement, though.

1. NEVER mine a diamond without first ensuring it isn't next to lava.

2. NEVER mine a diamond using a pickaxe that doesn't have the fortune 3 enchantment.

3. It is easiest to find diamonds around lava lakes, so if you find a lake, be sure to scope it out.

This is a LUXURY

you need diamonds
to make the pickaxe
to mine the obsidian,
and more diamonds
to make the enchanting table
to enchant
a pickaxe with Fortune 3.

Yeah, Fortune 3 is nice, but it will take you a while to get it after you are done farming all the sugar cane and leather to make the supporting bookcases for the enchanting table.

I tailored my advice for general diamond mining, not for when you're just starting to get them. Alongside that, though, it isn't impossible to get the five diamonds you need for the pickaxe and enchanting table if you can find them in villages, temples, or some other treasure spots.
