The friends we take for granted are often the ones that leave the largest impact on our lives. When Spike falls seriously ill with a mysterious disease and the ponies strive to nurse him back to health, Twilight Sparkle comes to grips with this very realization about her number one assistant--and friend.

EDIT: So this little story made it on Equestria Daily on 10/8/12. Now please excuse me while I pass out on Rarity's fainting couch while murmuring a soft Fluttershy "...yay."

I had three particular goals for myself in writing this one:
--Focus on the dynamic between Twilight and Spike, because I think it seriously needs more attention in the series.
--Include a heart-to-heart between Rarity and Twilight, because they really haven't bonded much canon-wise.
--Attempt to write in the style of an episode. Albeit quite a dramatic episode. (Who am I kidding, I failed miserably at this one) :facehoof:

Enjoy and please comment on your way out.

Brilliant. Just brilliant

You had me crying at some parts :fluttercry: This was a amazing story, really well done

Aaaaannndd... I cried.
Bravo, good sir.

Bravo, bravo. I really started crying when Spike left:fluttercry:...This is what I love about this fandom. We can take the show and make it into whatever we want. I agree that they need to add more of relationship between Spike and Twilight as well. This was one of the best Spike fanfics I have read so far. Keep up the good work.:pinkiehappy: Now I have to go listen to "Smile" so I will stop being sad.

I'm a big Spike Rarity fan so when it said that she left him with lipstick all over his face I had this huge smile on my face.
I'm also a hopeless romantic so I get moved so much with simple emotions and I can say that I had to force myslef from crying because the minute I did I would not stop. You sir or mam are a gift thank you. Now have a bunch of pictures just because.

And what I was picturing when Twilight was holding Spike

And last Spike because the dude is so awesome I love the little guy

This instantly won the best story I've read ever, my god I cried, literally cried out and the emotion was all so well written I truly enjoyed this from start to finish, by far the best Twilight and Spike story I have ever read  :moustache:

uh what the fuck twilight let's see what is more important old book or sick best friend

I have to say, this story was incredible. There are simply not enough good Spike fics out there.

Well you had me bawling! Saddest yet happiest story I've read in a long time. Very well done!! :pinkiesad2::fluttercry:

This was fantastic, definitely one of the best fics I've seen exploring Spike and Twilight's relationship.

Two things will be known about this story:

1. I have never cried this hard to a Fim fiction.
2. Thumbs downing this story will get you banned.

What a wonderful fiction, you have my undying, lifelong respect. Thank you.

You succeeded in all three goals. It was very impressively written and uplifting, and I admired how you portrayed characters and brought out the emotion. Very early on I realized that this would be a favorite of mine, and I hope I can develop my own writing to be more like this.

1035987 Manly tears were shed.

Meh, this story was soooo cliche and predictable...
... sniff...
NO! I AM NOT CRYING!!! These are manly tears damnit!!!

Well, what can i say? This fic is very well written and it had me reading non-stop to the end.
You are good and you should fell good!

:fluttercry: That. Was. Brilliant!:pinkiehappy: That was one of the greatest stories ever!:pinkiesad2:

So well written and emotional and :raritycry: Amazimg job. I hope to see more by you.

Many a man tear were shed.

I cried a little towards the end, and not many stories can do that to me.:fluttercry:
This was very well done.

I agree that there aren't enough Spike & Twilight fics... thank you for writing such a good one!

That was wonderful. Bravo!

So moving! Wonderful job. I was genuinely afraid for Spike throughout the whole thing. I didn't think it'd have a happy ending, but I'm so glad it did! :moustache: Spike deserves all the happy endings.

This was fantastic. You succeeded wonderfully with the heart-to-heart between Rarity and Twilight. I read that part several times just to soak in the emotion. You've created a wonderful little story here with a very touching lesson. Your insights on the relationship between Twilight and Spike were especially powerful. I loved this. Well-deserved feature.

I was a little too close to crying. I'm not suprised I didn't. My Little Dashie dried up most of my tears. But I definetly would've cried if Spike had died. :coolphoto::raritycry::pinkiesad2:

man reading it in class trying so hard not to cry:fluttercry: as rest of the class watch macbeth lol this is so much better:derpytongue2: than to watch such a boring movie, great story well written love it

I wont cry...I wont cry...I wont...:raritycry:

A beautiful story. I was fighting back tears most of the time, and the fact that I just so happened to be listening to the Dead Island theme didn't help much... :fluttercry:

Beautiful simply beautiful :fluttershyouch: i could really see this as an actual episode

Just plain excellent......nothing more needs to be said....who am I kidding? You did an excellent job at the bonding between Twi and Rarity, you're right about the show not focusing on that, also.....you pulled alot of emotions from me, and that's pretty darn difficult. You get the thumb, the follower, the whole dang thing! Congrats!!

I'll admit, I had tears. :fluttercry:

Oh man I thought there at the end that you were going to off him. Then Fluttershy came through, thank havens !

Beautiful, simply wonderful!

Darling that was wonderful. :raritystarry: When Spike faded after the potion was administered, I got a chill and almost didn't want to keep on reading. That was one of the most emotional pieces I have read on this site, props to you dear
Ciao :raritywink:

I read this with Dr. Wily's theme in the background! Also, damn good fic:yay:

absolutely brilliant story! I loved it! keep up the great work!

You suck making a grown ass man cry like that:applecry:

still not enough to make me cry
but i DID feel my eyes moisten just a lil bit
but mostly i was taking great relish in all
the emotion everyone was having
seriously its like i FEED on their sadness or something

Something I really like about fan fiction is that there are no rules. In actual published books, the has to be a happy ending. It takes the suspense right out of it sometimes. But with a fiction, you can do whatever you want. You never know for sure whether or not it will turn out peachy. They keep you on the edge of your seat the entire time. I actually thought Spike was going to die.

This was amazingly done. You definitely achieved writing the story in the style of an episode, I could even imagine parts where commercials would have been inserted. Brohoof to you, good sir. Brohoof to you. /)

I'm gonna go on a limb here and say if this isn't the best story on this site, it's pretty damn close.

I'll just click that little star up in the corner, if that's alright with you.

Okay, I'm gonna go do that now.

Where the heck is the sad tag on this man?? I need warning before I'm handed all these feels :fluttercry:

Though I suppose the description was warning enough. Still, great fic--I loved the emotional value. Keep up the good work!

HOLY F$CK! That was amazing, I almost cried:raritydespair:
You sir deserve a mustache :moustache:

Best story I've read on here so far. :pinkiehappy:
. . . . .
... Manly tears...

Twilight is best pony, but Spike is my favorite character. I really wish the show would have more interaction between the two, and I always love it when I find a good fic for them.

Oh, why would you post that? Geez, poor Simba no I'mgonnacryyouterribleperson. :fluttercry:
