Self-inserts can easily be funny and enjoyable and not be written terribly. Just look at Through the Eyes of Another Pony.
For something totally unrelated to ponies (for now. the author also wrote My Little Blackbird) go read Sleeping with the Girls. That title is 100% literal in its wording and is intended to be misconstrued as a sexual statement.

Well, that's the last time I try to write an intelligent comment on this site. Nevertheless, I like this here tail, mane.
You know, from what I've read in the comments, there's more of this story somewhere else, but I'm just chill here and wait for the rest. Cause i'ma badass like that. I'm a patient man, I mean, I can wait for TheGentlemanCreeper to update his stories, which, lately has been 4 weeks+ apart. Sure real life gets in the way, and I'm not saying I enjoy waiting, just that I can do it. And anything worth having, is worth waiting/fighting/working for. So yeah. I just hope this isn't a Bloody Mary thing going on. That'd be weird. Would it be like... Indirect suicide or something in a self insertion? My hurts brain...

I don't like self inserts, I have a hard time reading first person view stories and I don't care for the humans in Equestria trope (and thinking about it, I don't go much for comedy stories either...).
So I'm completely attributing it to your skills as a writer that I'm absolutely enjoying this story so far. I'll definitely stay around for the next chapters. Keep up the great work!
Now this is interesting. I am sure I am not alone in my feeling that I am currently breaking a personal rule of mine: 'no self inserts', but I'll be damned... I am doing it anyway!
Still, the fun bit is trying to work out just whereabouts in the city you are for a lot of this. It's been a while since I have been to Sydney, but I think I can remember the CBD well enough. (Melbourne is so much easier to navigate! D:)

I wouldn't have been able to take that.
The whole myth about self inserts being bad stems from the fact that the many beginner and/or poor writers will write them in a mary-sue kind of way due to lack of creativity. If a good and/or experienced writer writes a self insert it will be good and Butterscotch here proves that point perfectly :)
