The Zebra civilization was never the richest in Equestria. They made do with what they had and stuck together like one big family. But even with a strong community, the lack of natural resources and food hit the species hard, to the point of near extinction.
Then a special zebra was born with a gift. A gift that she was destined with... a gift that could bring new life to her people.

Sweet, it begins!
Make a running directory of the foreign words, for sure. A lot of novels with foreign tongues include something like this at the end of the book, the primary example I'm thinking of being Chinua Achebe's "Things Fall Apart."
Just keep it running as like the last chapter of the story, and update as you go.
Great start to what looks to be a promising story. Always exciting to see backstory of an underdeveloped character, and I can't wait for more!
When you said the first chapter was 70% rhyming, I never knew how right you were. This had to have been a pain in the ass to write, and I cannot wait to see the continuation. Another awesome fic to follow, I see.
