Not cool, dude!

I'm sorry, but the premise of this story is rather unrealistic. Why would Novo pull Silverstream out of the school when she and the others actively chose to stay over the break with Gallus?

Yeah, I have to agree with JWR. No offense to you, but this story's premise was kinda dumb. Queen Novo getting on Twilight for keeping Silverstream even though it was Silverstream's choice to stay was just unrealistic.

9090767 No, I'm not offended at all. I just felt a little uncomfortable with the choice of punishment in this episode and this is my way of getting that feeling off my chest.

9090677
Why not? He says that he has autism, so it isn't supposed to be some sort of secret.
The plot of Unwell is that Twilight has ACMS (= Abstract Cutie Mark Syndrome = Pony Asperger's )
I just thought that he might be interested in a story where one of the Mane 6 shares his pronlem

9090781
That's fine. You have every right to express yourself like this. But Novo sounds out of character. In all honesty Her behavior in this one shot has her act more like Prince Rutherford to me.

9090800

9090800 What I was trying to go for here was to have the audience remember that Twilight had gotten on Novo's bad side before.

I can see why you’re getting such mixed results.

Might I ask why you are assuming that Twilight and Dash were harsh during the detention lessons?

Those where off camera, so while you are free to assume as much you can also assume the detention lessons where administered well. In fact the innovation to be at the professors table during the Hearth’s Warming party seems to indicate the latter over the former.

In fact I would assume that to Gallus’ friends sticking around and joining in on his detention lessons was treated as a voluntary extra credit assignment that they could drop out of at a whim, as only Gallus was required to attend the over the brake lessons.

And that’s why Novo’s letter makes no sense. I think we can all read that interaction and know Twilight’s just going to send a letter back saying something along the lines of “You are clearly misinformed. Your niece was free to come and go as she pleased and chose to skip your sacred festival of her own accord. Only Gallus was required to stay on school grounds and she chose to remain with her friend. So if you still feel the need to complain, I can assure you that the matter is strictly between you and Silverstream.”

And then you have Starlight giving an argument with no merit.

‘You where never kept from your family during the holidays.’

‘I never did a crime worthy of such punishment.’

Between those two idea’s Twilight’s counter argument holds more merit and points out that Starlight is trying to compare apples to oranges. Or in this case a trouble-making student to a well-behaved one.

9090802
Yeah and she forgave her and it kinda makes her look like a bad aunt by not respecting Silverstream's wishes and a petty ruler for getting on Twilight for something like this.

9090826 Again, just airing out what was on my mind.

9090802
And on top of that, attempted theft of a national treasure does not compare to keeping a student who chose to stay of her own free will. I'm sorry, but this is just a bad story.

9090841 not my best work, but this was more spur of the moment kind of work.

9090865
I know from experience that working spur of the moment is not a good idea. Looking back, I still don't know how my one story on this site has a like/dislike value in favor of likes. I'm sure that if you spent more time on this it might have been good, but as it is right now, it's just bad.

Thanks fir writing this-the punishment was far too harsh. Upvoted. Keep the good stories coming and don't listen to the neighsayers.

9090829

Fair enough. I'm only pointing out that the two points raised in the story lack logic.

I am also well aware that there are plenty of people who prefer the emotion first response, who might share your sentiment.

Except it wasn't. The students made the choice to stay at the school over the break so that Gallus wouldn't be alone.

9090946
Gallu's punishment was too harsh then.

JWR

9090950
Except yet again, it wasn't. He sabotaged the tree and damaged school property. A harsher punishment would have been fining him for the damages.

As is, he got off pretty easy. This is a prime example of why I detest most "Accusation" stories.

9090954
You DO NOT keep a child from their family. IT IS WRONG. Period.

JWR

9090961
Harsh how? He was told to stay and clean up the mess, and both Twlight and Rainbow Dash let his friends stay to help him out. Also, he clearly stated in the episode that he doesn't have any real family to go to. So this is more than generous.

9090898
....Or indeed, Neighsay himself. :rainbowderp:

I agree that this episode was surprisingly heavy, more so than probably intended. I like this take, because even though the show kept up its cheery tone, children were being kept from their families at the end of the day. Even if they stayed voluntary, they would undoubtedly be somewhat upset that they didn’t get to see home or their kin. I also thought Twilight’s begrudging resolution was extremely well written and in character.

9090979
It's not an acceptable punishment. I should not need to explain this.

JWR

9091075
And what in your mind would be an acceptable punishment?

9091088
1. Make him scrub the toilets for a month.
2. Write an essay on why you shouldn't play dangerous pranks.
3. Lines (I will not...) are always a good classic.

I realize he doesn't have a family and if Twilight had invited him to stay because of that I'd have gotten it. But forcing the Student Six to be away from their families should not have been on the table as a punishment.

JWR

9091097
Be that as it may, it's not anywhere near as cruel as you're making it out to be. And once again, it's not like he's going to be away from anyone who'll miss him.

9091121
...That last part made me sad. Do we REALLY need another orphan?

People mad about this have obviously never been to a public school or the military. If someone messes up and doesn’t come clean everyone gets punished. That’s how it works at school, in the military, or in jobs.

9091210
Don't tell me you're taking 9091131 seriously. It's bait, dude.

9091210 Whilst true, whether or not it's appropriate still depends on the context, and people are right to be mad if the context doesn't justify it.

In school, that kind of group punishment is only appropriate if the teacher knows for certain that the whole group is in on it and refuses to identify the culprit. Like if a student throws trash at the teacher in the middle of class whilst her back is turned. In the episode's case, Twilight has no proof that the other students are covering for the culprit, so reaching for group punishment there is kinda questionable judgment.

The military gets more leeway with this, since it regularly deals with life or death scenarios.

Is it possible for you to make a sequel story? One where Twilight wants the students to bring their families so she can apologize and try to make it up to them?

This wasn't too bad...but whether they knew who did it or not, they can't flat out accuse the one who made the mess out loud. That would have been far far worse then what did happen. I think what they did was rather simple, and did the trick without being too harsh but hey that's just me!

And as for Novo's little letter....Silverstream could have left at anytime once the truth was revealed..but she chose to stay, like the rest did. I don't think Twi or RD should apologize to any of the families, but maybe explain what happened and why. That'd be good!

I liked this story over-all though...not too harsh towards Twi, and not too soft either. Just the right amount of talk/etc from Starlight (who I am not a fan of..but she had her good points here like Twi did)

Nice work on this.

You know, i'm surprised that no one has written a story yet where Ocellus is not only angry at Twilight and Rainbow Dash for their handling of the situation, but also calls out both Sandbar for blaming her for the prank and Gallus for pulling it to begin with. The other students would also apologise for their argument with each other before Gallus confessed as well. I'm not asking for much, but i think a sort of extended epilogue to A Hearth's Warming Club with Sandbar feeling guilty over what he said to Ocellus and apologising to her, along with the other students making amends with each other properly would be okay!

9091210
"Punishing the innocent to figure out who the guilty is, is ok because it's tradition."
So you are fine with getting locked up in prison, if a close family member of yours committed a crime?

Sacrificing the innocent to punish the guilty is never ok and anyone who believes that should be forced to experience how it is to be punished for shit you didn't do.

9186680
I have to agree on this

JWR

9090829
That's the problem.

Can you do one where Spitfire and Rainbow dash discuss this after she receives her letter from Queen Nova?

To be honest, I feel Spike was a little harsh also. Can you do one on Spike maybe?

Fortunately, Starlight had a star to steer by as the new head of the School of Friendship.
