And so the conquering hero returns. A good chapter. I'm looking forward to what comes next. Also, I love Asha, She's awesome.

Glad you like the character!

I also enjoy how you're taking bits from real-life history and using them for world building. Using the out-most walls of close together homes and filling in the gaps to form a defensive wall is something that was actually used just not as well known as the standard city walls. It's always fun to read a story that has solid foundations in realism.

Often times the most deadly defense is the one which is the most unassuming!
i hope he remembers to not make the buildings circular, common mistake is people believing round walls are the best choice, angles and corners force attackers to take difficult positions, makes a siege harder to maintain. i doubt verik has the engineering skill to make a catapult or a trebuchet, but you know with the right materials, a few of those abodes could actually be used to house ballistas.

Love this quote it's so true. Just be careful which real-life bits you use as a good chunk of them were made not only by different cultures but for different reasons. Take Japanese castles vs. English castles. Both are amazing pieces of architecture and both serve the same purpose as a place of defense and strength. But both are made differently.
English castles are very rigid by design, thick, strong stone wall to hold off enemies. whereas Japanese castles, while their bases were made from stone, were made from interlocking and movable pieces of timber. The reason for this was mostly due to the fact that Japan gets a good amount of earthquakes and so they had to build their castle with that in mind. If you built an English/European type castle in Japan and it was hit by a decent sized earthquake, the thing would topple right over, not so much Japanese castle since they could move and shift somewhat and so could keep upright whether the earthquakes.
I went on a bit of a rabbit trail there. sorry. Just wanted to give you an example. Also, an idea for you to think on. Maybe when he gets the tribe to make said houses, maybe have them make the "Defensive" side of the homes be built thicker than the rest. If you designed it cleverly enough, it'd look like a normal house and nobody would notice the extra thick wall. Food for thought.
Another idea, if an enemy somehow breached one of the homes, I honestly don't see that happening in a siege but it's a possibility, maybe have them set up traps inside them homes as another line of defense that the attackers have to wade through. If you can't tell I'm a bit of a Military enthusiast, especially the type that will be in your story.

The shape of the wall depends on what they would be used for. Why many English and European castles used circle shaped walls and towers was because the siege ammunition thrown at the walls had a higher chance of glancing off and doing much less damage. It's much easier to hit and damage a straight flat wall with a catapult than it is to damage a circular wall with one.
Nothing is perfect though, every defense had a weakness that can be exploited. I have no idea if the corrupt warlords have siege equipment as powerful as catapult or trebuchets they might have but they were extremely expensive and costly to make at the size that they needed to be to threaten a castle. Also, they seem to be of a more infantry centered warfare from what's been written. So maybe the biggest thing they have is ballista, who knows.
Also building a catapult isn't all that difficult, it's getting and shaping the materials that cause the real problems. I've actually made a decently sized trebuchet in my backyard before, out of some of the dead trees in the woods. Was it the best, of course not. Did it work? Absolutely. We had fun tearing down the old barn with that thing.
I wouldn't be surprised if Verik became a legend in a few generations from now. He has a good heart and a strong spirit. His good luck is also appreciated I'm sure.

Well damn, the first thought in my head was a circular wall. Thanks for the tips.
That feel when you run into the end of the written chapters and have to wait for more....
This story just keeps impressing me.
Very well done

May it continue to impress.
Gotta love Nuru's quest. Something gained, some bones cracked, new supporters, new enemies.
A crazy pain-is-good-for-you fairy zenmother.
I'm wondering if our hero and Asha are going to be referred as a couple from now on, in the tribe, and if they will go on another raid across the river.
Plus it does sound like our hero has gotten a lot more confident.

Where did you get that quote?
